[Timstamps, Sources, Phylogeny & Canonicity breakdown in this comment] IMPORTANT: MHE will only cover main series monsters! So no Frontier, Explore or MHOnline exclusive content! They are all made up by me. - The name "Ornate Rath". Made up by me, the game simply calls them "Azure & Pink Raths" - The difference in Venom Gland location between Old and New World Rathians. This difference is only noticeable in-game, and is never explicitly mentioned in writing. - The mutation to the Metal Raths Flame Sac. While something is clearly different about it, no book has thus far described how and why their fire is different. - Dreadking/Dreadqueen Gene Hypothesis. This is not a canon fact, but a theory borrowed from Monster Hunter Stories 2's post-game, where NPC dialogue muses on that maybe Rath Deviants are part of a royal lineage. Just as the video says, this is only a hypothesis and not accepted as true (canon) by the Guild (Capcom). - Raths having low Juvenile Mortality. This is a guess on my part based on a) the large and healthy population of the species and b) the canon fact that Raths only lay 10 eggs at a time. Small clutches + high child mortality would make establishing and maintaining a large population rather difficult, so I went ahead and assumed that most Rath babies survive their youth.

12:00 The pairing is actually explained. Rathalos have harems of rathians and patrol very large stretches of territory, moving from one rathian to the next. The rathians fight amongst themselves for who is top dog and gets the best territory, hunting grounds, and nesting locations. Top rathian also get the most attention from rathalos. Rathians who are on the bottom rung of the ladder are forced to nest in locations like deserts where prey is scarce and nests may be vulnerable.
@Oceaniz
@Oceaniz Жыл бұрын
That is from MHW Complete Works, correct? Because that book specifically speaks of New World Raths (which is why the harem stuff is mentioned later in the video). Is there any other source that mentions this behavior for Old World Raths as well? The old books all say "its unknown" and I havent checked the Rise book yet :D
@Sithari_XAOS
@Sithari_XAOS Жыл бұрын
@@Oceaniz Yeah I saw you mention it later in the video. What I'm mainly basing it on is that capcom has openly said the way the monsters look and act in world is the most accurate in the series. If they could've made the old world raths look and act like world's raths they would have. So I take that to mean the looks and behavior of world's rath is the default.

What I could suggest about the rarity of deviant species is the challenges that come along with it. Having a dormant trait in your gene sequence that would cause you bodily harm can be extremely dangerous especially for the hatchlings. For example, the expression of the deviant trait in a Rathalos could cause it to emit uncontrollable fires among the otherwise normal clutch of hatchlings. While they're immune to this fire, a lot of mother animals tend to separate newborns who they deem as "abnormal" or "sick" to avoid infecting the other newborns. It is even more of a challenge for a young Rathian. The introduction of small doses of poison to the food of the newborns to get them immune to said poison (as mentioned in 7:08) suggests that they aren't naturally immune to it. Hence, the hatching of a deviant Rathian which constantly exhumes uncontrollable bursts of poison is dangerous to the batch of newborns and thus is more likely to be killed of or separated by its parent. Their early lives aren't the only challenge. If they even manage to survive these, they are faced with the problem of procreation. While it is a natural drive for their species, their increased hormonal levels can further increase their aggression. This makes them view their mates as potential threats and would instead fight/fend/kill them rather than mating with them. So deviant Raths are rare because of three reasons. 1. Their genetic expressions are rare enough. 2. They don't make it to adulthood. 3. They cannot procreate and thus cannot pass this now-activated dormant gene to their offsprings.

Went back to heaven's mount recently. I forgot how horrifying egg aggression is on raths especially those loaded up with the frenzy virus as they essentially double their speed. Even normally they are still a decent threat but by god that egg quest moritifies me it shows how dangerous a normal rathian and rathalos pair is when their muscles are unbounded essentially. Nobody knows much about apex(non frenzy caused) individuals though they seem to be similar to deviants. but can be knocked out of their amped up state by irritating specific bodyparts.

I think the deviants could be related to the lack of interbreeding between subspecies. It could be like how ligers grow bigger than lions or tigers because they inherit a growth inducing gene from the father and they're supposed to inherit a gene from their mother that regulates it, but the gene just isn't there or isn't compatible with the father's inducing gene, so the offspring grows larger than either parent, potentially unsustainably so. It could also be possible that the extra vented flame sack could be what causes the metal plated shells of the metal raths. They might have started out by using the extra heat to protect them from the metal contaminates in their environment by overworking normal flame sacks to melt down heavy metals in their systems and expel them through sweat glans or some analogous organs. The metal would then bod with the shell as it cooled.

@@LTDragoonIII Not really. The Royal Raths are a sub species of the species rath. When I said, "different species" I mean subspecies. For example a Northern white rhinoceros is different from a southern black rhinoceros. Both are rhinos but they are different species. That's what I'm trying to say
@LTDragoonIII
@LTDragoonIII Жыл бұрын
@@jikemusic8081 You started off with not really, then proceeded to say subspecies, the same thing I said. Also your analogy of rhinos is wrong here. black/white rhino is A specific species of Rhino. (with White rhinos do have 2 sub species.) Where as in monster hunter they are literally called a subspecies of the red/royal Rathalos and green/royal Rathian, not a separate species under the umbrella of rath. Or at least thats what the guides, and games say. This videos great but it does get a few things wrong. (For instance only the gold rathian gets more conductive from metal, the rathalos instead becomes weaker to water, with it's conduciveness unchanged).
@jikemusic8081
@jikemusic8081 Жыл бұрын
@@LTDragoonIII Nope. That's scientifically not how subspecies and species work. A species would be something like a tiger or a star fish. A subspecies would be a Bengal tiger, or a crown of thorns star fish. The northern white rhinoceros and the southern white rhinoceros, yes are subspecies. But so is the northern black rhinoceros and the southern white rhinoceros. They are all subspecies of the species rhinoceros. Black rhinos and white rhinos are the same species because rhinos all come from the same species. What you're claiming is that the black rhinos and white rhinos come from the same family and not the same species, which is wrong. The regal raths are a subspecies of raths and so are the chromatic and metallic raths. Secondly, the raths are more conductive if they are coated in metal, however the gold rathian is more conductive due to golds high level of conductivity while the silver raths weakness is water due to rust. Iron rusts faster in water and gold conducts electricity better. Both conduct electricity however, so he's not wrong. TLDR; There are families (mollusks) then species (starfish) and then subspecies (crown of thorns). For rhinos it would be family (whatever family rhinos are from) species (rhinoceros) and then subspecies (Northern White Rhinoceros). The White Rhinoceros is not a species, it is a subspecies. The northern white rhinoceros is just one type of subspecies. The black rhinoceros is also a subspecies. Same with tigers and all other animals. Secondly, he got his facts right. Silver isn't as conductive as metal but it's still conductive. He didn't say both were weak to Thunder, he just said they could conduct electricity, which is true. Rathalos is just covered in iron which makes him weaker to water than thunder because Capcom couldn't make them have the same weakness (though iron should be just as weak but whatever). Mind you, all his videos are hard off scientific data from the real world applied to a fictional setting. You can't really nitpick about science because it is literally science.
@LTDragoonIII
@LTDragoonIII Жыл бұрын
@@jikemusic8081 I'm going to address your points from bottom to top. Before I start, I just want to say, it's to debate science with someone who knows science. First you can nitpick science that's how you make new changes and discoveries and as for his science nothing he said is a scientific law. As only laws can't be changed. A good example of nitpicking of science is atomic structures. There are 5 models, and when I went to college last year, they made me learn all 5 of them. To show us it was subject to change, outside of laws as we know them. This is further proven when you are using science and talking about a video game's universe. You have to consider the science of that world. Your comment on iron kind of proves that point. Also you are wrong about silver. It's more conductive then gold. "Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals. In fact, silver defines conductivity - all other metals are compared against it. On a scale of 0 to 100, silver ranks 100, with copper at 97 and gold at 76." - Lehigh University (Gold is more used due to it's inert chemicals.) Both fe/male Raths base (royal) start off with 2 star in thunder. Which silvers stay with, but it's increased in the females. Now I wont get into what weakness they should have because...well you and I both know the game kinda follows it's own rules. However my point stands. He should mention that it's different for both. The video is 30+ minutes long. He can add in a few seconds. (Side note I'm not sure where you are getting the iron part from either. I don't remember that mention in the video. Nor is it said in any sources, that i've found.) That being said, on to your point about family's. I'm not claiming that at all. And you missed my point about the rhinos. There is a black and white species. However, the white species has a subspecies, after it. (Though that could be no longer canon as seen with world, and in fact there is a change they new models could be used if they return to the old world in future games invalidating the regional differences. ) To be honest it appears it ws a misscummication. You're exact words were "Had no idea that pink and azure raths are a complete different species. I just thought they were variants. That's literally insane" Which implies what you thought I was implying, "complete different species" implies that they are from the same family but different species.

Fun fact: Deviants name in Italian are just Latin words (for Rathalos and Rathian it's "Rex" and "Imperatrix" respectively)

"A typical Rathalos can stay in the air three days in a row." So a typical Azure Rathalos hunt, then.

In mh3rd portable, Rathalos have the smartess ai, he know to fly behind you and BAAM shoot you with the fire, in MHW the first I got charted is because of him, and don't ask me about the First game MH origin, he adopted velociraptor to guard his nest!

Love the video and can’t wait for more! 1 question though, and I might sound dumb asking this but, is there a reason the Apex Raths are excluded?
@Oceaniz
@Oceaniz Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Apex Monsters are extremely boring to discuss because they all have the same origin (Ibushis winds) and just recycle the abilities of the deviants to varying degrees. Risen Dragons will be included though! (if the series gets that far lol)
