"rather than" and "instead of" have similar meanings. In some cases, they may even be used as synonyms, but you must know the difference between these two common expressions. Check out the video above and don't forget to hit like and share! :-)

I'm brasilian and I started improving my English at the beginning of the pandemic, in the middle of 2020, watching too much Netflix and really too much videos on KZfaq, with teachers speaking English and Portuguese, but, finally it's time to shift to teachers that speaking only in English!

I get it teacher but I've come across with this sentence in a novel: "I feel like I've been adding to that weight all these years, rather than trying to take some of the weight off his shoulders." Would not be 'instead of' in this case?

"I took the car rather than going by bus". "The musician played a sharp instead of a flat". Are these sentences correct? (in addition, is it possible to interchange the expressions here? because I didn't understand very well when they are interchangeable....). Thank you in advance for your support :)
@KSEAcademy
@KSEAcademy 7 жыл бұрын
1. Correct. 2. Correct. (But what are a "sharp" and a "flat"?) In the first one you could also say "instead of", but not "rather than" really in the second. Let's just say that "rather than" expresses a preference while "instead of" only expresses a fact. :-)

Hello! Please, could you tell if it is correct: It's a rather boiling day. Thank you in advanced!
@KSEAcademy
@KSEAcademy 7 жыл бұрын
Hi! In this case, you can't. You can't because "boiling" is an extreme adjective (non-gradable) and you would have to use "absolutely" or "completely". Also, it doesn't sound idiomatic to say "a boiling day", you would say "a hot day" or simply: "It's (absolutely) boiling." Hope to have been of help! :-)
