Rating The US State Capital Flags

One topic I see a lot on KZfaq is reviewing and critiquing US state flags, and 9 times out of 10, the opinions on the state flags boil down to this. Seal on blue, bad. Geometric design with limited color palette, good. Since the reviews for US state flags have been done to death on this website, this just made me wonder, how do the flags of each state’s respective capital city hold up? Since the Fourth of July is just around the corner, now is the perfect opportunity to do that.

Gray is the uniform color for the CSA. Montgomery didn’t want to just have the confederate flag so they threw in some gray.

The Star with diamond shapes on the flag of Topeka, also depicts the state flower of Kansas. This flower is the sunflower.

For Augusta, Maines Flag. That’s not the State seal it’s the city seal. The State seal is what’s on the state flag. Besides that everything else you said for the flag I agree with.

As usual, my homestates flag gets a good rating. I saw these flags flying all around Denver, proving our pridefulness over our state. Denver's flag is good, and Colorado's flag is good. Cant say so much about our anthem, however.

That grey in Montgomery's I believe is cadet grey, which was the color of the uniforms worn by the South in the Civil War.

I agree with your rating on the Columbia, South Carolina flag but for different reasons. I think pairing blue with... blue with... uh... blue is an absolutely terrible way to make a flag. Not to throw shade at Minnesota, but any flag that has various shades of blue as its main function just looks horrible which is why I think the new Minnesota flag looks like hog wash.

The "no text" rule is bad. Using images or icons in place of text is good if it's something that's going to be seen very often. But imagine if you went into the settings of an app and there was no text, only icons. Sure, the icons that you see often will be easily recognizable, but for the less common things it'd have been better to just have the text. National flags are going to be seen fairly often by a lot of people, but provincial flags will be seen less often and city flags less often still even for world famous cities. If the city or state/province wants its flag to be recognized by people not living there, text can help. Also, vexillological associations often praise Japanese prefectural flags but a lot of them - maybe even most of them - feature a stylized Japanese character.

Minnesota flag just got changed May 11th and i remember when voting for the flags there were so many better options but the flag they picked they tweaked to to make it look more boring 🤦🏽‍♂️ Edit: Im talking about the state flag Saint Paul's flag is really good

Denver's flag in my opinion is really bad since it doesn't show other cultural things about denver other than mountains, just like Pocatello. meaning the cultures need some representation, and the rules of flags pretty much sucks.

Honestly, I don't really like the Columbia, SC flag as an SC resident. It looks awkward and messes with me. I do have an idea to fix it, though. I'll even keep the symbolism. The three rivers are represented with weird proportions. If made a vertical tricolor like France, I would personally like it more. Have the colors in the same order as on the original flag. Take the dark blue and use it as an outline like in Wyoming or Montenegro's flag. Keep the flag's original aspect ratio, and make the tricolor centered in the rest of the empty space. Finally, add the 6 pointed star in the center. Is this an improvement, or did I make it worse?

I also rated the capital flags of Arizona, Indiana, Iowa, and Nebraska a 10. (And that's just off the top of my head).

Considering our State flag is usually rated so low (although we definitely have the best seal, our flag is veryuncreative tbh), seeing the Capital City flag was a pleasant surprise
