Scientists listened to animals playing and they noticed something that appeared to them to be laughter. They studied this behavior for couple of years before acturally realizing that it is laughter.
Soon they got a device which transformed higher frequency sounds to frequencies our auditory system can hear.
So they developed a way to ask these rats if they liked being tickled and the answer was definite yes!

awww my pet rats do this also. Ive had pet rats for most of my adult life& are the nicest, most loving pets. Rats like human company when they trust you. also, yes as babies they will poop all over, but after a couple months of growth they figure out how to no longer do so. now my rats reserve one corner of cage for poop, opposite side from food and beverage. they love being tickled. rats are very clean when domesticated. most never bite at all unless harmed. most will go right up to you when they want fun. you should always buy two or more, one single rat will be lonely and bored. They talk constantly in frequency we don't hear, they need their own speech and company. warmth while asleep, body heat, rats sleep in a pile. they are not mean,or dirty. They will love you if you love them back.

this is an awesome and very educational comment. thanks for sharing. I only had hamsters once younger and didn't know much about anything, just decided to get then, they eventually ran away. I still don't know how to prepare properly or what I'm doing if I were to get some pet- let say rats. I was also one of the people who think bad things like the adjective nasty of rats. but I don't hate them and its nice to learn these humane qualities about rats. I'm sure rats could think bad things about us until they get to know us too. so it's all a matter of getting to know. I like spiders especially tarantulas. haven't had any but learned some things that opened my mind and peaked my interest about them.

Vinterkorv Actually as they grow they become house-trained and only use their litter if you don't keep them out very long. We're actually taught to do this for my lab class whenever we have to do anything stressful for them like give a shot. It's sad. I can't look up rat videos anymore without seeing comments about people hating them. These animals are incredible. In addition to laughing, they also display something similar when a cagemate dies. They are very intelligent, and loving. Wild rats are often dirty, of course. Then again, so are many animals. That doesn't mean we should hate them with all of our guts.

I've also found sounds that they use when they see something odd, and want the other to come and see it with them. which is a high pitched CHIP. CHIP. CHIP. and then if they decide it's scary it goes to an EEEEEEEK! at which they both run and hide. but their tickle laugh is the best. it's not like the chips in the clip, it's more of a burbling WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE. very cute.

Bryan Becker Very smart... there's a clip here on KZfaq showing a rat stuck in an inescapable (but humane) mouse box trap near a huge pile of food. When a second rat was brought in, it ran to the food before noticing the other rat that was trapped so it went over to see what was up. After a little bit of squeaking between the two it found the mechanism and freed the original rat. Then they both shared the pile of food. There were a few rats who didn't care about rescuing the trapped rat until they were done eating their fill. Guess this kind of behavior encompasses more than just humans!

I think the optics of the wormy little tail works against little ratties as far as how people judge them. If little rats had furry little tails like gerbils maybe people wouldnt be so put off by rats. Personally the fleshy little tail dont bother me as i have had rats for years till they passed away. I try to tell my family not to Judge a Book by its Cover about rats. But my family is highly judgemental, not only about people but also rats, so they have and continue to lose out on alot of experiences that could enrich their lives and let them grow. But its their choice, and its their loss.

Attach a spring to the rat's tail and put your hand out in front of the rat where it can be seen. If the rat struggles to run to your hand, pulling against the spring by a significant amount, then that's a pretty unambiguous indication that it enjoys your hand's company.

If they believe the animals can laugh (something only humans are supposed to be able to do) and show pleasure at something that has no bearing on their survival, then how are we still using these animals as test subjects for the cruel and awful tests still used in pharmaceutical etc studies? If they are able to do this, then there is absolutely no reason at all anymore NOT to use humans as test subjects for human medicines or cosmetics etc.
@VanillaSnake21
@VanillaSnake21 8 жыл бұрын
a laugh is just an involuntary contraction of the vocal cords that is usually due to some neuronal excitation. Just think of it as a spasm, when you stimulate neurons to a certain degree they can start to fire rapidly generating these spasms. It is true only humans can experience neuronal excitations that are not directly influenced by physical stimuli, like for example we can get generate current flows just by having certain thoughts. But it the mechanism is the same as it was billions of years ago. So laughter is not something that is expressive of higher intelligence but rather just a natural response of nervous and muscle tissues to stimuli.

Very interesting - thank you :) Still don't like the idea of testing on animals anyway whether or not they show a sense of humour we can understand...sigh
@VanillaSnake21
@VanillaSnake21 8 жыл бұрын
Tamsyn van Gelderen well you brought up pharmaceutical studies, is it better for a rat to "suffer" or for a little girl with incurable spinal muscular atrophy, who will be bound to a wheelchair for life starting at age 14? It's a matter of perspective. Also animals don't suffer the same way as us, so it's not as inhumane as we'd imagine.
@TamsynvanGelderen
@TamsynvanGelderen 8 жыл бұрын
+VanillaSnake21 - I disagree - anything with a nervous system can feel pain, pretty much everything with a brain can show anxiety, fear etc Only thing is, we as humans don't always know how to translate what we see or hear into human emotions etc...and you cannot tell me that an animal forced to endure shampoo poured into their eyes or to ingest substances till half the test subjects died to prove that maybe it isn't a good idea to eat too much of it (LD 50) - doesn't suffer the way a human might if they were in the same situation. If animals and people have similar systems, they will feel pain or discomfort with the tests that are performed (many just plain torture) - with small differences eg some people have a higher pain threshold than others etc. The point about medical or pharma testing is that to me it makes no sense - what they test animals with aren't things an animal can or would use - they are for humans and some animals don't respond the same way to certain chemicals like we would eg Thalidomide - no problem tested on Guinea Pigs - huge problem used on pregnant humans. There are plenty of humans we could test our products on - rapists, pedophiles, people who offer themselves as guinea pigs (I would do it) then the results would be accurate for our species. Animal testing is archaic and it doesn't work as well as testing on the appropriate species the product is intended for.
@VanillaSnake21
@VanillaSnake21 8 жыл бұрын
Tamsyn van Gelderen Yes of course I agree that the nervous system is the same and they experience pain and discomfort. However you're comparing it what we feel those things as, for example for people pain is usually not the worst part of suffering, it's the mental processes of a person realizing that the pain will go on for a long time and that there is no way to escape it etc. We suffer because we can understand the situation and see ahead into the future. While in animals, the pain response is the same but they are not able to fully understand how that pain effects them, they just feel it in a raw sense. So for example a rat will suffer much much less mental damage as the result of the suffering rather than a person in the same situation. If you're still not convinced then think about a person getting cancer vs an animal, cancer can cause pain, but for a person that's the least of the least of the suffering, it's the mental understanding that there is no way out, for an animal it's just pain. By the way there are no trials allowed that inflict extraordinary pain for long intervals. They could test ld50, which could cause an animal to go into a coma or die but there is no physical pain involved, they're usually fully unconscious by the time the breathing stops etc. And other trials that do cause discomfort and moderate pain, like electroshock are carried out under guidelines. As for the effectiveness of it, I'd say there are many many more similarities than differences, obviously some drugs won't act the same way in animals, but most times carcinogenicity is very similar, birth defects are similar and ld50 could be ballparked. So even if we did agree to test some criminals or something instead, it's just not feasible due the time it takes for lets say cancer to develop in people or for birth to take place etc. They need to test a lot of people for that too, so a study like that would probable span decades instead of a a few months.

Such beautiful and adorable creatures, I would love to play with them like that. Sure wild rats spend a lot of time in trash and are dirty, which make them spread disease (common sense tells you to stay away from them) but these are clean. I hate how they're misunderstood so much.

i wonder how they developed a way to ask the rats if they liked the tickling! so cool

If they were screaming in fear, they wouldn't have started running toward the scientists' hands to play.

@deathbee13 It seems quite obvious. If they are enjoying it, they will seek out the tickling/playing. That is why they chase his hands. If they dislike it, they will avoid his hands.

Empathy is NOT limited to JUST "putting yourself" in another's position, it's the emotion behind wanting to do so in the first place which separates it from instinct. An animal mother will DIE fighting to protect her young, even when her own life is at risk - which goes AGAINST the base instinct of self-preservation - the same way a human mother "reasons" to make such a choice.

I showed this video to an ex-prisoner who said, "How can those rats be 'happy' living in cages? In prison, we also learned to laugh, but we were not happy. These experimenters mis-use the word happy to describe rats laughing in their cages."

I love my petrats, and I think, I know a little bit about ratbehaviour. what here is described as "being tickled" looks to me like "being forcefully groomed", and the sound it makes is rather a defensive than a joyful sound, since they don't like to be dominated...

it's difficult/expensive to do a brain scan of a rat. Easier way is to ask the rat to make a choice. Design an experiment in which one lever always results in some neutral stimulus (an led is lit, for example) and another lever always results in the rat being tickled. Then present the rat with both levers and measure how often each choice is selected.

wow i think they should do the same TICKLE test on all animals we interact with and see if they actually laugh that would be so cool if they did

@megabigblur liking people is beside the point. the revelation of this experiment resides in the discovery that animals other than human hold the capacity for laughter. a trait largely regarded exclusively human.

A hamster's way more likely to bite you. A rat you interact with regularly will come to trust you and enjoy your company. I play with my rats daily, wrestling and tickling them. They've only ever caused tiny scratches when getting too excited; never once bitten me. They don't even bite my dogs. Rats are highly social and will never randomly bite someone they trust. Even the temperamental ones will give you clear warnings before they actually bite. And then you probably earned it.

If you spend enough time with animals you don’t need to be a scientist to know they have feelings. Feelings are the common denominator of language.

I noticed the rats were making the noise whenever the guy wasn't even touching them, but when they were chasing his hand. ...This isn't proof it's laughter.
