In this video I show you the new studded winter tires and aluminum wheels I bought for my Toyota RAV4 Prime. My Prime comes with 19" wheels from the factory but I wanted to downsize the wheel diameter to 17" for more sidewall and more tire options. Take note of the hub centering rings if you buy the same wheels.
Here are the wheels & tires that I show:
Fast Switch Titanium 17" wheels: www.1010tires....
Michelin X-Ice North 4 235/65R17 tires: www.michelin.c...
The proper torque setting for the lug nuts is 76 lb-ft and the pressure spec is 35 psi. The information shown in this video should apply to 2019 - 2022 Toyota RAV4's (any model), and should also apply to other Toyota models such as the Camry.

This was helpful. It would great to see a follow up video of how well the RAV does now on snow and ice.

So far the tires have fantastic traction, they are noisy and are hurting range, however. We have not yet had normal blizzards and such.

Thank you for this. My RAV4 prime also has 19” wheels and I want the 17”. Was wondering about space due to the bigger caliper but I worry no more.

Why do you want to change to 17? For winter or any other reason?

A little anti-seize behind that bushing might make it a lot easier to take it off if any rust develops

So far I can’t estimate the actual loss but it does seem to be sapping EV range.

I have been looking for such a video for 6 months and finally found it. Thanks! 17 inch original wheels for Toyota are 17x7 with +35 offset with 225/65/17 tires for those that come with 17 inch ones. Original 19 inch wheels come with 235/55/19 on Limited and XLE trims (19x7.5 offset+40). I wonder if 235/65/17 would fit 7 inch wide wheels. Also, did you experience dirt and mud splashing on the sides and side windows while driving? Because +35 offset makes the tires stick out from the sides.?
@InternetDude

No splashing up the sides any different than before.

hello . Do you think the measure 235/70 r17 or 235/75 r17 work correctly in a 2019 RAV4?

Did you use the original lug nuts on wheels with a conical seat? You may want to check that.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
The original lug nuts work just great, the lug nut seat is a flat surface, not tapered, just like the OEM Toyota wheels. The lug nuts that came with the wheel installation kit were identical to what I had, so I returned the lug nuts.

I thought when you buy aftermarket wheels, you need to buy an aftermarket lug nuts. Didn't know the OEM lug nuts fit on the fast wheels. I am looking into buying an aftermarket wheels for my parent's rav4 when they get it. Hopefully this month or next month, Who knows when.
@InternetDude

It depends on the vehicle and wheels. The lug nuts were identical to the factory ones so I actually returned the aftermarket ones.

Too bad you didn't get the hub centric version of the Switch wheels, that way you wouldn't have to mess around with centering rings. I have the same wheels for my RAV4, Sienna and RX350.

I was not aware that was an option, of course that would be preferred…

@@InternetDude Nothing wrong with the set up you have it just too bad 1010 didn't offer that option to you. The hub centric wheels are a bit more expensive about $20/wheel. My tire guy put me onto Fast wheels about 8 years ago and I haven't looked back. They are owned by FastCo a Quebec based company and they make OEM wheels currently for 7 auto manufacturers in Canada.

It's too late now but I know there were two options for my wheels and I never considered hub size, I only used the guide of "it fits" so good enough. The first choice of wheel also needed the spacers so I never even gave that a consideration. Next time I will have to pay more attention LOL

Hey, I am quite interested in Rav 4 prime. I have heard some heating pump issues, especially in the winter. What's your experience with your Rav 4 prime? Any regrets, dislike and overall recommendation/suggestions for some like me. Please a d thanks
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
Heating is no problem, however the heat pump only provides heat down to -10C. Colder than that and the gas engine needs to provide cabin heat due to limitations of the heat pump. Otherwise a fantastic all around vehicle.
@renoallstate4573
@renoallstate4573 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the people who are disliking the fact that the cars engine runs when below -10c need to buy an EV vs a PHEV, not a big deal in my opinion, on your prime are you able to hit the auto start/precondition/AC button on the key fob and will the car run the engine when under -10c ?
@renoallstate4573

I also run designated winter tires on all my cars but usually run the rim down an inch or two from stock but the tire larger than stock using the same tire calculator as you. I find this beneficial for better ground clearance and also for better traction. I have found the lower the profile of the tire the less traction I have been able to get although not real noticable till you are in the lower profiles. I have never had an issue with snow build up in the wheel wells from slightly larger tires even when running in deep snow for the hour trip into work. Maybe not the best strategy for tire sizing but that was what I learned just from trial and error.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
@@renoallstate4573 Exactly, remember it's not a BEV, it's a PHEV. It's actually -11C not -10C where the heat pump will operate down to. From -12C and colder the gas engine needs to run. The A/C button on the fob function no longer causes any heat to form in the cabin due to that heat pump limitation below -11C. It also does not fire up the gas engine under any circumstances, so no pre-warming at all from -12C and down.

Hey buddy...thank you for posting this. Could you tell me where you got those "Hub Centering rings"? Did it come with the wheels or do you know where I might be able to find those types you got. Thank you. JT
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
Hi JT, I bought the wheel hub centric rings from the place I bought the wheels from (1010Tires). The wheel company does not sell the rings because the wheels fit so many different applications. If you have different wheels from these you would likely need different sized rings. Although the inner diameter would be the same, 60.06 mm. Hope that helps.

@@InternetDude Hey great.. thanks.. it does give me a starting point. I got the RAV4 Prime SE with the 18" . When I traded in my old vehicle, kept my 235/65/17 with Blizzak WS70 winter tires on them. They seem to fit okay.. but I didn't even think about hub centering rings till I saw your vid. I did put it on there real quick just to look. Didn't drive it. but seems to fit snug. I'll find some 60.06mm rings on Amazon and try it out. Thanks. JT

What did the wheels come from? Many Toyota wheels have the same bolt pattern.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
You may not even need centering rings. If your wheel holes are tapered and your lug nuts you are fine as-is.

@@InternetDude Well..funny you asked that. These actual rims..that I will use are MB Vector AM 73. They are 17x7 5x100/114 (guess that means 5 bolts 100 or 114mm spread???)and that's where I put on the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 235/65/17. Over 50% of thread still on there...so didn't want to waste it. Anyways......I had bought back 11/11/2013 for my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Got rid of that and bought a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe. Glad they fit. Lo and behold. The Prime came along and couldn't resist. So here I am. Lifted up the Prime, Dry fitted it. Put it on and set her down. But didn't drive it. But...seems to fit. Tighted it up while still up. Lug nuts fitted fine. Found NO freeplay left right up down. To my inexperienced eye and knowledge...seems to be okay and bolt pattern seems to match. Just worried whether it will hit or rub against something I can see on the inside. Don't want to ruin a $40K plus investment. Didn't want to try it yet with a centering ring and end up...getting that thing super stuck in there or something. What do you think?

I run nokian studded tires on mine and lose about 10km of range is what I figure. In the dead of winter I lose a total of about 20-25km of EV range when needing the heater, tires, and everything else.
