This music glows. It shimmers like a pointillism of tiny snowflakes in the moonlight against the black night and its quiet, cold exhales. It's warm in other places, like the light of the lamp I sit under to read when the sun is sleeping. It whirls about with great tension like a ballerina or a dervish. It flits through old modes and new as if they were the pages of books, multiplying their individual effects innumerably.

Uno dei tanti capolavori scritti dal genio Ravel. Onirico, appassionante, travolgente e al tempo stesso meditativo. Da sogno. Merci Monsieur Ravel

an exalted , withheld yet highly romantic introduction; truly an extremely well-written trio
i remember seeing this film at a foreign film festival not realizing how much it would change my life,... plus mother's bolero too,...

Ravel é genial. Paisagens sonoras, serenas...puras e belas.

What I think makes this version superior to so many others is that the trio is not composed of three soloists pulled together by the label as a marketing concept. It's easy to hear that these musicians love the work, and playing together. Nobody's trying to call attention to him or herself.

That's exactly why this version is, for me, nearly perfect. You made the point i think (and i think the musicians have very good taste too in their choices).

I beg to differ. The Beaux Arts Trio is a good counter-example.

The Beaux Arts Trio is not a bad comparison to make here. Yet I heard one of the most transcendent, mutually giving, ego-less performance of this work at Parkville University (in Missouri, an awesome destination for musicians) just a couple of years ago.

Two composers boggle my mind with how they could have come up with the music they did: Ravel and Schubert.
@Noah-ws8ho7 жыл бұрын
It's different, but Schubert was most definitely a remarkable musician in his own right.
@patricioreygadas40507 жыл бұрын
I do understand though ... they went both beyond what they had around ... pure magic ... Schubert intense and short life and music put him quite above his overrated contemporaries
@weinhold02047 жыл бұрын
There's no accounting for taste. I personally think Schubert's output is more consistently great than Ravel's.
@Mezzotenor7 жыл бұрын
One crucial difference: Schubert, particularly in light of his short lifespan, had a mind-bogglingly large output, while Ravel tended to write much more slowly. Something similar could be said of Beethoven: His output is consistently good but small compared to those of contemporaries early in his career like Mozart, Haydn, Cherubini (30 operas, 12 Masses), and Salieri (also primarily vocal music).
