I will never tire of the big band sound. Though I'm a blues/rocker in my own playing, I've told many a Hard Rock fan that there's nothing more "hard" than a big band blowin' hard. Never saw Ray Charles, but was lucky enough to see Count Basie, and it blew my mind.
@michaelhorton1350
@michaelhorton1350 3 жыл бұрын
Cut my chops in a school big band w/Basie, Ellington, Kenton, Beneke, Rich, Holman charts and must agree. Nothing compares to the fully involved acoustic presence of tight, swinging ensemble. Was fortunate to spend years on 5th bari (Selmer MKVI) and our group finally got hip to maybe 6 or 7 solid tunes. And when hittin’ it on those numbers, we really could blow. But to have seen Basie,...thrill to even consider the thought. Might find it interesting that Basie himself (An old Oklahoma Blue Devil) sought to have T-Bone Walker to front the band. And Bone would’ve carried the show, too. The quality of cats in those days is hard to find presently.

I saw the Basie Band lead by Frank Foster sometime during the early 90's. You are correct, they rocked and the dynamics were unbelievable. I was a rocker who got dragged to it by an ex-girlfriend, they completely changed my opinion about jazz. I've loved it since.

Note to all you young cats coming up in the music industry. Notice that everyone on the stage contributed to the music being played. There was NO extras flopping around on the stage, just musicians. *When your content is that good, you don't have to wow the crowd with extra BS.* Almost 2 hours and people watching this were glued to their screens. That is the true sign of a consummate performer. PROPS.

Junkman2000 As a high school kid, I got to see B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Buddy played a heckuva show, that cat cranks it like Clapton in ‘66 even though he’s in his 70’s. But then B.B. Kings band came out and played for 15 minutes, blew my mind. Then the legend himself wheeled onto the stage, sat down, and howled both with his voice and his six-string... I won’t ever see anything like that again, I’m sure of it.

@@Junkman2008 Were you insulted by my question? Why would you say I'm small minded? Maybe my question was a little insensitive, but what I meant to say is that the "young cats" that you seem to be talking about are so far away from appreciating something like this. I mean, you're speaking about the crowd that goes on stage with extras flopping around. Possibly the worst kind of live concerts. Why would they come watch a live Ray Charles concert in 1973? I'm sure they're too busy in the other side of KZfaq. Meanwhile, I'm listening to Donnie, Ray, Stevie, Muddy, Aretha, Luther and many more.

Ray is my favorite music person ever. His range his soul his capacity to capture our hearts is unmatched. He is my hero But But ______ he ruins this magnificent set by responding to this pea brain in the audience. He owned this audience giving one of the greatest sets I have ever seen. The remarks by Ray were way way way out of line referencing his fly etc etc. He stunned totally stunned the audience by his remarks. He talked and talked and talked ....... Pure gibberish and turned a loving audience against him. The audience did not come to hear ray become a comedian . Ray displayed a streak of bad taste and poor judgement. He totally ruined a set that is truly of all time. He still remains my hero but those remarks were horrible .
