Ray Harryhausen. The one and only. Mighty Joe Young was my favorite of his films that he worked on..

Since I was a little boy, Ray Harryhausen's creations inspired me (along with many other works from other individuals) to be the artist I am today, It all started with Ray's "Cyclops" in "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" when I first saw it with my young eyes it just brought something inside of me to life, I remember how every time I saw that one eyed creature appear on screen I got excited, especially when he battled the Dragon towards the end of the film, I would always draw and try to create creature like he did (obviously I am a much better artist now then when I was a young boy.) Probably one of the most memorable times was when me, my brother and father went to tower records years ago, I could of chose anything in that store at the time, but out of everything in there, I choose the X - Plus figurine of Ray's Cyclops, everyone was confused as to why I (a young boy probably only 4 - 5 years of age at the time) was so fascinated by such an ugly beast, but to me it was just incredible to hold Ray's creation in my little hands, later I explored his other masterworks, it wasn't until recently (a few years ago) I got to finally see "Mighty Joe Young" for the first time, when I watched it I said to myself "why haven't I seen this sooner!?" the story was great and like usual, I was extremely impressed with Ray's work in this film, the way he brought Joe to life just put a big smile on my face, #1 because of how lifelike Joe was in this film, the expressions on his face, the way he moved and would react to certain things was incredible. #2 because I am and have always been fascinated by Gorillas on screen and in "real Life." #3 because Ray was inspired by "King Kong" growing up, and to see him work on a picture where he can bring a giant ape to life like seen in "King Kong" must have been special, a dream come true for him in some ways. What it ultimately comes down to is Ray is and will forever be one of the greatest who ever did it! He is the greatest in my eyes, but not everyone will agree. (Yes, I cried watching this movie.) & (My apologies for the life story, just thought I share since it's Ray Harryhausen related.) Thank You for uploading this! R.I.P. Ray Harryhausen.

So modest as always. I was watching the two boys when he was talking and they had the same wonderment a child has, I would imagine if we could see our own faces watching his movies we would have just that same look.

While looking for videos on the original Mighty Joe Young, which I LOVE, I came across this video and it was VERY interesting and informative. Now I HAVE to send a link to my brother-in-law in Southern California. He LOVES old monster, creature, and Sci-Fi movies. He’s especially enamored with Ray Harryhausen. He buys memorabilia, books, videos, and “action” figures and he’s been to numerous autograph signings. I think he may have met and gotten Harryhausen’s autograph since Ray is the Special Effects MASTER he most admires.

I love the organic way the old special effects were produced,..it was a painstaking Labour of love in perfecting the art....I think modern day CGI produced in modern day effects hasn't got the charm or natural feel of the much inferior man made genius of yesteryear....notes the pity

WHY would ANYONE give this video a thumbs down! This interview is excellent!! Charlie and Steve are great interviewers, sort of leading Ray on to an informative Q&A session that I know they already personally know 99% of the answers to. They are both great teachers (Steve even teaches animation and such at Cal Arts) and are both absolute pros (BTW, where was brother Ed during this... behind the camera?).They did the interview this way for the benefit of those who might see this and that might NOT know the answers already, like they do. Besides, it is wonderful to hear Mr. Harryhausen answer in his own words... and add to them his own personal recollections (he WAS around 85 at the time, ya know!). Now that Ray is gone, this bit is even more valuable, for posterity's sake. The film clips added here are excellent, well chosen and well placed and the whole thing nicely compiled. 6 out of 5 stars, as far as I am concerned! Thanks for posting this "HarryA".

It's a shame Ray never got to keep one of the Joe Young armatures, but I do believe someone made him a replica before he passed. This armature is owned by film prop collector/historian Bob Burns.

In a book I have it talks about the unborn calf skin/hair. They painted latex over the hair then used bugs to eat the skin away leaving the hair follicles in latex! Kinda gross.

Incredible man ray Harryhausen I wish I could learn his secrets of making Mighty Joe Young puppets out of aluminum wire I can make the skull out of silicone molding and into a casting skull 💀 and put the wire on the eyebrows and on the lips 👄!!! But one I don’t get is that Ray Harryhausen, put plasticine clay on the lips and I asked myself is how and what kind of clay that will able to move the lips so manipulated, like in the movie? What I mean is that what kind of plasticine clay consistency is it Is it Soft, Medium or Hard? If anyone can find the answer to this question please don’t hesitate to contact me on this video!😎 and yes The great Ray Harryhausen The one and only stop motion animator will be missed RIP 🪦 Please and thank you 🙏
