its about the skill sets you accumulate when you do those "crafts", particulary, your knife skills, thinking skills, an putting together a kit from just your surroundings.

talking of birch bark,as you do, i found an old rotting birch tree waste high,i pushed it over, hit the outside with a stick, the rotting wood fell out, and i was left with a birch bark tube which you can easily make a bucket or container out of ! ahaaa enjoy! i must get out more! thanks ray great channel!

if someone rocked up to camp with their own handmade matchbox i'd be thoroughly impressed. Anything you make yourself you will have more respect for it and the materials it took to make. Yes he uses store bought glue, but in other videos he's shown us how to make glue in the field. He also mentions that glue it not needed, he's just giving an outline of what we can achieve with our surroundings. I hate it when people complain about people who aren't using bone axes and making a fire with just flint and their pubes. 99% of people go hiking and camping with equipment that was store bought or synthetic, bags, knives etc. If you're so anal about being completely 'wild' then next time, just go to the forest with your wits and nothing else and see how far you'll get.

Pretty sure making this matchbox is bushcraft, and that is what the video is about. A debate about whether or not matches is "ok" for bushcrafters is also pretty moot to anyone that has tried to make fire using only bushcraft. Besides Ray Mears is one of the worlds experts when it comes to fire making, since that is what he has focused on throughout his career.
@waveman04 жыл бұрын
could be used to store any number of small items, a fishing kit, a needle kit etc, not just matches. Very cool little box. Pity not many birch tree's grow in Australia and not sure if we have a similar or tree that I could substitute for the birch bark.

If I were RayMearsBushcraft, I'd cut a circle off of the side of the match box and glue it on the inside of the lid. Then it's just a matter of remembering to put the safety matches with the action end downwards, and make sure to make the birch matchbox thin enough that the matches can't flip inside. Even if I was using strike-anywhere matches, I'd glue a piece of coarse sand paper on the flip side of the lid.

You can also chew up bluebell bulbs for natural glue, but be careful not to swallow any. If you oil the bark afterwards the rain can’t get to the glue anyway!

Figured out how to deal with the rain problem. Glue the striker to the bottom side of the removable cap. Be sure to place the match-heads facing the sealed end of the "matchbox".

If you don't have glue, use the wet rice as a glue make sure the rice is sticky, or you can use some tree blood, the tree blood should be white and really sticky like jackfruit trees.

This is great, I recently became the owner of a fallen birch tree that I was fortunate enough to have. I’ve been carving kuksas and spoons with the wood but I have been at a loss of what to do with all the bark. Luckily I was smart enough to save it. Can anyone tell me how long the bark stays malleable, should I store it in a particular way?
@Sheepdog13144 жыл бұрын
birch bark contains a type of oil, and stays good for a long time. I would put it in a cool place with no bugs. The birch tree rots before the bark does. If you have large pieces you can make containers, small pieces you can make what Ray Mears does in this video. I use small leftover pieces (lots of them) to make birch tar to attach my knapped arrowheads. Birch bark lights up even in wet weather because of the oil content - you can always start a fire with a strip of birch, or use shavings for tinder if you use flint and steel, or a ferro rod. And you can cut the inner bark into strips and weave a backpack - you have to peel the bark apart. If it gets dry, just soak it.
@xMrjamjam12 жыл бұрын
what oil did you use on the wood?
@davidomahony655910 жыл бұрын
The skills used in making the matchbox could also be used in other ways, so for anyo0ne saying that this is pointless, I say you are wrong. Plus fire and ensuring that one has matches is one of the most important aspects of bushcraft, so it could be life or death, hypothetically, in some survival situation, created by going to the woods and trying to simulate a survival situation. #self-fulfilling prophesy.
