“Have you heard the tragic story of Darth Maul The Jealous?” A long time ago there was a young cosplayer who spent all his money aspiring to be his favourite Star Wars character. Despite the fact that he was built like a twig and appeared to have no friends, this young Star Wars fan was determined to master the look of his silver screen hero Darth Maul. One day he heard there would be a gathering including lots of like minded people, they were going to see each others costumes and buy things. The climax of this gathering was the chance to meet some of the characters on their days off from Star Wars. The young cosplayer had gotten his costume together with a few days to spare and was eagerly awaiting the event. On the day of the gathering he got his costume and makeup packed and headed for the event. Once there he changed into his costume and applied his makeup as best he could. It wasn’t perfect, there were minor imperfections and he’d had to do the best he could on his own in a toilet cubicle but as far as he was concerned he was now Darth Maul and everyone at the gathering would think the same. Finally he pulled his plastic double bladed replica toy lightsaber out of the cardboard poster tube and instinctively flicked the switch on. There was a faint double ‘snap-hiss’ as the sound effects mimicked the ignition. He looked at the toy, concerned and a slight look of panic and bemusement flashed across his red and black painted face. The flimsy toy had the faintest red glow and he realised that the batteries were flat. However Darth Maul without his unique weapon just wouldn’t be complete. The cosplayer decided to front it out and get some batteries as soon as he could. He unbolted the cubicle door, opened it and strode purposefully out of the toilets, lightsaber in one hand, now the batteries had failed completely and the toy was unlit, he had a carrier bag with its contents: his jacket, packed lunch, phone and train timetable. As he rounded the corner he saw a throng of people, they turned towards him, there was excitement and people were jostling for a better view of him in his costume. Then suddenly something was happening, everyone was looking past him. It must be something big, maybe one of the Star Wars characters had arrived on their day off, probably C3PO as he turns up to everything or maybe as he couldn’t see which character it was he reasoned it could be little Wicket. He strained to see who it was but no, neither Anthony Daniels or Warwick Davis were there. Suddenly his blood ran cold, the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, like they were trying to see the action. He couldn’t believe it, he stared in disbelief across the short distance to the centre of the ring of expectant fans and saw himself, it was Darth Maul’s day off, looking far less intimidating without his horns and tattoos, he was even smiling. From somewhere in front of him he heard a loud double ‘snap hiss’ and saw a brightly glowing double bladed lightsaber toy being handed to his hero, who had in the time it had taken for that sound effect to register now become his nemesis. The cosplayer knew he didn’t have the dexterity to join in, and even if he had, the batteries in his own toy had given up. Suddenly no one was looking at him, they had all turned to face the real Darth Maul, here in front of him, on his day off he looked like any other normal person only he had a working lightsaber. The cosplayer wished it was Darth Maul’s own lightsaber, and not a toy, perhaps Ray Park would cut himself in half accidentally. He put down his carrier bag and watched. Ray Park was enjoying showing some moves, he started slowly but the admiration of the crowd was working and Ray Park was enjoying himself, the spinning blades were moving faster and faster, the sound effects chip was struggling to keep up as Ray sped up into a frenzy, the red blades were a blur of movements. The cosplayer was staring at his nemesis and wishing there would be a flash of red light and a sizzling sound but it never came. Ray Park built the movements into a crescendo, the blades now appeared like a wall of red lightning and then everything suddenly stopped. There was no sizzling sound, the red wall disappeared in that instant and the toy was carefully tossed back to its owner. The cosplayer took an involuntary half step forward, as if coming out of a trance. The owner of the working toy was fist bumping Darth Maul, appreciating the display the only way he could due to COVID restrictions. The cosplayer snapped back into reality and turned to find a shop which sold batteries, vowing to get himself enrolled in some baton twirling lessons, after all Ray Park must have started somewhere and he decided that seems as likely a place as any.
