Ray Sawyer in Interview
Ray Sawyer (February 1, 1937 - December 31, 2018) was an American singer and vocalist with the 1970s rock band Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show] Though primarily a backing vocalist and occasional percussionist on congas or maracas, he sang lead on their hit song "The Cover of Rolling Stone" and was a recognizable presence in the band owing to the eyepatch and cowboy hat he wore. He was also the uncle of the vocalist of Wild Fire, Zack Sawyer.
Sawyer lost his right eye in a 1967 automobile accident. He said the following about his life around the time of his accident: "I must have played all the clubs from Houston to Charleston until I decided I was going insane from too much beans and music, and I gave it up. I saw a John Wayne movie and proceeded to Portland, Oregon, to be a logger complete with plaid shirt, caulk boots, and pike pole. On the way my car slipped on the road and the accident left me with the eye patch I now wear. When I recovered I ran straight back to the beans and music and vowed, 'here I'll stay'.
Sawyer was the lead vocalist on the band's breakthrough hit, "The Cover of Rolling Stone," as well as many of the Medicine Show's earlier songs. Eventually, by the late 1970s, as the band found commercial success, Sawyer stepped back into a backing vocalist behind Dennis Locorriere, occasionally playing another instrument (for example, on "Better Love Next Time," one of the band's later hits, he can be seen with a prominent bongo part). Sawyer left the band in 1983, allegedly because he was no longer happy with the band's direction.
Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). In addition to their own material, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show performed songs written by the poet Shel Silverstein.
The band had eight years of regular chart hits in the United States, where their music was played on top-40, easy listening, and country music outlets, and throughout the English-speaking world including the UK, Canada and South Africa. Their music spanned several genres, mostly novelty songs and acoustic ballads in their early years, though their greatest success came with their later material, mostly consisting of disco-influenced soft rock, which the band recorded under the shortened name Dr. Hook.

You are one of the lucky ones. Wish I had a time machine to go back to the 70's and see these guys live in concert. Dr Hook songs take me back to a simpler time and place. RIP Ray Sawyer. Thanks for putting your heart and soul into entertaining me and millions of others.

@@robertbush7290 Hey Robert,I was stationed in Germany 1971 74 in the military when we met Ray Sawyer. Believe it or not they played at a high school gynasium ! It was a good sized place , nice seats but we kind of made it to front of the stage. We kept yelling at Ray all through the show. At the end he told us to come around to the back of the stage. Then they took us to the boys dressing room and the party was on. We talked about the Army& music where we lived back home . Also seen alot of concerts there ,Great times there.✌✌

@HeatherSpoonheim
@HeatherSpoonheim 7 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. They did a lot of Silverstein material but they only had the opportunity to do that because of their established success. The band actually broke up because of all the novelty bs they were doing in place of their own art. I do love the Silverstein stuff too though.

So he does have a daughter named Amy!... he says so in this video.... online it only shows he has a son. Can anyone tell me what happened to her does she still exist, is she still alive? someone said she was killed by drunk driver. I tried to Google and do some research but I couldn't find out. Anyone?....
@deborahc.crawford256

Yes indeed sweet Amy does exist. She lives in Florida as does his wife of 49 years at his passing. Amy is gorgeous! They are an extremely tight knit family That little new granddaughter he was talking about in this video is herself now a mom of 2 beautiful children, thus making Ray a great grandfather. He got to know them and love on them before he crossed over. But again to reinerate, Amy Sawyer (I won't say here last name here,) is alive and well and beautiful, and misses her Daddy every day. Don't know where a car wreck would come in except for the one in 1967 that Ray was in where he lost his eye and was in a wheelchair for a year.

Dr. Hook was part of my childhood. They were fantastic until they tried to convert Dennis into a pretty boy raspy voiced sex symbol.. Going into the 1980's that was career suicide.. Love was out by that time and glam rock was coming in. Poor management... In my opinion. Better together....

Not true. Dennis had the voice, played several musical instruments and all the talent. They harmonized well together but on his own, Ray was very flat. Dennis was the backbone, not Ray. It will never be the same, but, Dennis voice still sounds fantastic. He’s doing great on his own,
