I didn't realize how good his voice is! I always associated him with his silly songs that really didn't showcase his voice. He was very talented and underrated.

@@robertschiffler555 I have heard both these songs and enjoy them immensely. Thank you for recommending good songs though. I’ve never really like John Lennon that much, but listening Ray et others sing “let it be” was almost spiritual. He’s truly a talented man.

@@little1942 Yes he was in fact if you listen to most of Ray's songs you'll find that he placed a little bit of his spiritual upbringing into them all. In some cases calling out hypothetical themes. Others deep faith. All without being preachy.

@@robertschiffler555 You can’t miss Ray’s deep abiding faith. But he’s also an entertainer that genuinely wants to see people smile. I lost a cat back in May of 2022, suddenly. I’d been crying nonstop for three days straight. On that third day, I guess G-d thought I needed some cheering up because “The Streak” showed up in my KZfaq feed and then “Cactus Pete and Lefty”. I’ve found it’s impossible to cry while listening to Ray Stevens. I’ll be forever grateful to Ray for helping smile and laugh again. His humor was just what I needed to begin healing from loss of Shark. He was a very special cat.

Talented comic singer, Ray Stevens was a multi-styled pop singer, rock, country, ballad, and Beatles guy. RIP Mama Cass on this TV special. Almost a religious gospel ending. Ray also did several controversial joke records. Big variety. From 1961-1980 and even 2020. Also a pianist and TV fave. Thanks, Ray. Vive les pop, rock and retro freaks ... .

In a trio of Ray's albums from 1969 and 1970 Ray covered several Beatles songs. This one never appeared on any of those albums but "Something", "Help", and "Hey Jude" did.

He sang this Paul McCartney right around the time the Beatles broke up. Paul McCartney had a dream that his mother, Mary, came to him at night to comfort him about the breakup and said "let it be" but a lot of people assumed he was talking about a visitation from the Virgin Mary. I wonder if that helped people to accept the breakup because the Beatles were the spiritual gurus of the "young generation" in the 1960s. People were so devastated.

Of course "Ahab" is a great showstopper, though Stevens omitted the part about the sultan in this version, felicitously replete with belly dancers. But the performance of "Let It Be" is out-of-this-world fantastic. Stevens proves to be a very capable pianist. The singing, his and that of the others, is superb. This performance surpasses the Beatles' own original.

In this song,writer Paul McCartney was referring to his own mother,Mary. (Of course a lot of people,including my grandmother, assumed he meant Jesus- Mom.)

Wow! We've got to get this whole show on DVD. The performance of Ahab the Arab owes more to the 1969 remake on the Gitarzan album. Like the original 1962 single, it omitted one verse. Ironically, he included the little tease part that led to that verse. Let It Be was a relatively new song at the time. Too bad he never recorded it. All of his Beatles covers are good. Some are harder to find than others. Cass wore a big quilt! Lulu did good. But who are the other singers?

I have no idea, I thought that maybe you knew. Very nice performance , I never heard him sing seriously before, I liked it. Someone in another post said that the heavier woman on the far right was mamma Cass from the mommas and the poppas. I'd like to know who that blonde was though. I think it's a cross between a MooMoo and a quilt. Poor thing. It was a long time ago. I think we were just coming out of "Big Hair" sort of & may just coming out of bell bottom pants or just getting into them Look at the size of Ray's collar. I really like him. Then saw him in person and he was truly under rated and laughing all the way to the bank with his funny songs!! LOL

I agree. I'm 70. 50 years ago I was crazy about him and still am. I think he's 76. He was at Branson still knocking me out. He is still plugging along. He did so many funny songs and then I heard him get serious. Whew! Great voice and can really use it!
