My grandpa and dad were Shriners, so I grew up around all those fine gents, and they really were a bunch of great guys. I nearly died laughing the first time I heard Ray's Shriner's Convention. Maybe it's cause of how I grew up by my lord that was a side-splitter for me. Anyway, because of that song I bought his record album, still have it, and it led me to the wonderful world of Ray Stevens.

He also did "Misty" (another serious song). Most of the stuff he recorded was original, but one song mentioned above "Along came Jones" was originally recorded by The Chords in the mid 50s. Stevens had a summer replacement TV show in the late 60's or early 70's about the time "Gitarzan" was on the charts.

I can't stop laughing! First of all, Ray Stevens' video of the "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" _always_ makes me laugh. And then your little comedy skit at the end! Wow! That was hilarious! I had tears rolling down my cheeks. "You shouldn't have been in the way!" "I almost killed my grandmother!" I'm still laughing as I type this. This fight or flight thing isn't confined to one ethnic group. My white mother -- who absolutely adored me -- would have left me to fend for myself if a squirrel, spider, wasp or whatever got in the room. In the 50s, Mother and her BFF were sitting at the kitchen table having coffee and yakking. Her BFF noticed a spider on Mother's shoulder, pointed to her shoulder and said, "Hon, you have a spider on your shoulder." That's all Mother needed to hear! With both hands, she grabbed BFF's wrist and used her hand to get that spider off of her, screaming bloody murder the entire time! This is still a family story that still elicits guffaws after all these decades. :D

True story, In 1985, When I just arrived at basic training at Ft. Jackson S.C., my drill Sgt. Asked me where I'm from. I told him "PASCAGOULA MISSISSIPPI." He looked at me funny like and said, "Ain't that where that squirrel went crazy in a church?" I told him yes, "I guess so." He said he didn't think that was a real place and that I was "messing with him". He actually went and got a map and made me show him where it was.

I loooove this song! I had forgotten all about it. It was popular in the 1970s. Love Ray Stevens. He sang a lot of funny songs, as well as a couple of "straight" (not humorous) hits. He had other humorous hits like "Guitarzan" (he even voices Jane & the "chimp" as well) and "The Streak." (Streaking was a fad in the 70s. People, usually guys, running through a public event NAKED, often getting away before anyone knew what had happened. Across football fields, and in the gymnasium during the senior play in my high school! Love your videos, brother!

No lie, one time I was visiting relatives in Kentucky and went to church with my cousins. They were inside all having a good time when we heard a man outside shouting "Lord, help me" well, everyone else thought he was filled with the spirit and were getting louder and louder. He just kept crying. When church was over, and everyone else went outside, the man was standing there with a cold cigarette in his hand and a rattle snake at his feet. It was dog days summer, so the snake was blind from shedding. Never will I forget this day, they all got filled with the spirit while the guy outside was crying because of a snake.
