I remember years ago Ray saying in an interview that he was a novice boxer. 88 fights and only 8 losses is bloody impressive, just shows how modest he is, proper gent.

Matt, what are your thoughts about the young bozo who just backed out of his challenge with Tyson? He's all mouth and no class. I was looking forward to seeing him get an attitude adjustment.

Hey I just read somewhere that the role of Carlin in 'Scum' (1977 & 1979) was originally written for a Glaswegian, but Director Alan Clarke was so taken by Ray Winstone (who turned up at the auditions as a joke), he gave Ray the part instead.

@@Winterwood768-yx9kx That shows how good Winstone was. It would have been much easier to give it to someone with a Glasgow accent because it carries so much gravitas for a hard-man role. To be believable with a Southern/London accent back then as a hard-man, was a tougher job, but Ray passed with flying colours!

@@KryptonitetoallBS Yeah definitely. It was a performance that launched his acting career, as its a film and a performance that no one ever forgot, even today. Ray's performance in 'Nil by mouth' was on another level though, and he should have got an Oscar nomination for it (although in truth, hard sell independent films like 'Nil by mouth' don't get that kind of recognition).

@@mattlegg1976 Not trying to be a dick her Matt and the poster you are replying to wrote Winston (as in Churchill) and you pronounced it like that in your introduction, but you spell Ray's name Winstone (as in made of stone), and so I think that the second syllable of his surname is pronounced as -stone. I might be wrong though, so perhaps you can ask him if ever in his company again and might even earn some Brownie points if he was too politic to say anything previously, or if you have a mutual friend or contact then maybe ask them instead.

Great to watch. Old school chaps reminds me of my childhood growing up around my dad and his mates. Sitting in the back of his London black cab on the floor looking up at these characters. Clean shaven, nice suits smell of aftershave and booze 🤣 the last of a memorable era. Thanks matt.

Was on same show as ray in the 70s. He Was a very good boxer...also what was said about nice guy boxers. I've not meet many bad ones in boxing gyms in my time. I still have a move about now in my mid 60s ... albeit a slow move about 😂😂😂😂 great chat matt. Thank you

Thank you Matt for another great video. Have followed Ray's career since his role in 'Scum' and I have really enjoyed watching him in his many films and TV. To think he was an amateur boxer kind of doesn't surprise me. Loved the story of the Richardsons and I have respect for what they used to be, cos they kept the London streets safe for law abiding memebers of the public. There certainly wasn't the street crime and mindless stabbings that there is today.

Ray Winstone went to the same school as me Edmonton County, he was a few years older than me saw him when he was a short blond haired kid bowling down Edmonton as if he owned it cos he just don the Borstal movie .He also remembers my Physics teacher Mr Povey cos he mentions his name on the Jonathan Ross Show as a great teacher and he was a pretty good teacher he was very fair but you didn't want to mess with him hed rough you up a bit ...I got 95% in Physics second in the class because of him

Enjoyed that video very much. My long-time old friend Charlie Braker/Breaker, would normally be present at such events but he suffered a stroke. He is recovering well and uses a mobility scooter to get to the bar. Can't keep a good man down. 👊

Great watch Matt!! I remember Ray saying a bit about amateur boxing as a lad, had no idea he had 88 bouts! And, showing our bloody age again (or mine!) my fav was Robinson, l even knew what Ray was saying about KOing his opponent moving backwards! Sweetest left hook!!! Also, lm not the biggest fan of pressers...gd fighters put arses on seats, you go to watch the fights, not two blokes slag ea other off... but just my opinion. Pity you didn't get Eddie on tape mate, these fellas don't last forever. Thanks for your work Matt, glad you had a great night.👍🏼🥊

I read that Ray wasnt going to het the part in acum ,but they changed their mind when they saw him bopping out after the audition . Got a few mates who box and they all have a certain confident bop/walk to them .

Rays cousin Ralph is Millwall and a bricklayer when first met Ralph didn't brag who his cousin was said come down boozer and there he was proper fella and stuck his hand in his pocket

Local legend from a notorious family from a older generation but was looked up to. I remember lot of lads styling themselves to his persona. I was in the east end from early 90s to mid 2000s I found it remarkable how many people done well. I came to Plaistow first then moved to Canning Town got to meet Danny Dyer who was a few years older than me at school but every one knew past students such as Perry Fenwick (good friend of my mum she knew Ray too as well as Bill Williams) Terence Stamp and Folk singer Sandra Kerr who was part of the Bagpuss TV show (an aunt of my ex) Bill Murray was another which people took local pride in. Lot of footballers too who myself and my brother played with who done well. Good memories
