This entire album (Throwing Copper) was huge in 1994. It is a masterpiece from front to back, no filler. Certified 8 × platinum. There were 4 or 5 top 20 hit singles off of it, iirc.

Mental Jewelry is soooo much better though for a CD. I know just an opinion but I can't think of one bad track on Mental and it's flow just dictates ya play it cover to cover while driving through the Midwest with the windows down.

To me, this song is a perfect encapsulation of how one person has a tragedy in life while another person can have a triumph. And, how when neither of them are aware of the other. It shows how life is so precious and how you should live each moment the best you can.

Lightning Crashes by Live, One Headlight by the Wallflowers, and Freshman by Verve Pipe, and you have all of the Jaded Soul of the 90's. Then you hear Sellout by Reel Big Fish and realize 90's music was an amazing rollercoaster

The video was actually meant to show a hospital-like setting, with a death here and a birth there. It's not meant to be about death in childbirth. The video was dedicated to a childhood friend of the singer, who was killed by a drunk driver.

This song always makes me cry. In 95 an express commuter train going 70ish hit a bus from from my hs school, killing 7 and injuring in excess of 25. I lost three friends that day. A major chicago morning radio host dedicated this song to my town and school as the news broke of the accident around the world

Actually this song was written by the lead singer in high school who lost his best girlfriend to a drunk driver. Her family donated her organs to a number of people, one young man got her heart and they remain friends till this day. 🙏🏻

One of the Best albums of the entire 90’s by far, and their first album (Mental Jewelry) is my top 5 all time… I am HIGHLY biased but they wrote most of the songs when in High School and my best friends had a band at the same time where they’d all play in Philly clubs (before certain hours as under 21). I’ve seen them like 50 times live and hung out with them many times in our teens. They were so talented. White Discussion from this same album is one of my faves if you want to react.

This song, and the album, Throwing Copper, actually came out in 94, and was huge for them. This song went to number 1 on numerous charts and the album spawned a few big radio hits that were played for over a decade, and can still occasionally be heard today. Some of those songs are, I Alone, White Discussion, Selling the Drama and All Over You. I'd recommend any of those songs. And their best song in my opinion came from the album that followed this one called The Distance to Here, song called Dolphins Cry. And they've had several other radio hits through the mid 90s to early 2000s.

I know I’m dating myself, but I caught this band in concert, the night before the start of my senior year of high school. The first week of which was actually hell to be honest, and the rest of the year wasn’t much better. But that show was like one last bright light of the summer, and they closed with this song. I just remember looking around at everyone, because it had become a big singalong. P.S. Nice glimpse of the singing voice.

When I get upset I play the Dam at Otter Creek. That was my teenage fail default. It's not the best it's not the worst it's The End. One of the times I deeply disappointed my grandfather was when I put throwing copper above the Beatles Sergeant Pepper's. 30 years later I hold firm. It didn't break ground, but it broke my heart.

Released in 1994, so no surprise you are not familiar with the entire song. But, it explains why you thought you have never heard it. Songs like this linger around, get sampled, covered, played incessantly, and spit out again in various forums. It's a classic to some, but modern to me (I.m 52) lol. Nice reaction!

04:30 No, love. Live was part of the amazing 90s bands that were active during that day. I honestly can't think of whether we would consider them grunge or not right now because I haven't listened to them in so long but they were popular during the same time soundgarden and Jane's addiction and chili peppers and Grunge was going on. Definitely in the alternative category. You should check out I Alone If you haven't already. As the commenter says below me, every song on the album was a masterpiece. they're really great

Live always had a very existential theme to their lyrics. Their early 90s songs like this one and a lot of the other greats on Throwing Copper ("S**t Town", "Selling the Drama", and "All Over You", etc.) seemed to be more of a theme of 'this is what the world is' and 'this is what I'm going to make of it' and then after Ed Kowalczyk became a father it felt like their lyrics became a lot more hopeful, even spiritual, but they were able to keep their distinctive sound. The "Dolphin's Cry" and "Heaven" were both big hits in the late 90s / early 2000s, the latter is about his becoming a father, and it's almost amazing that song came from the same band as "Lightning Crashes".
