Got this Faithfull diamond sharpening stone for Xmas with a carrier so I copied that to hold my leather strop which can be flipped over just like my stone. Had to make myself a little sharpening board that will fit onto my French cleat wall.
My chisels and plane irons will be always sharp as now it will be much easier to set the correct sharpening angle on the preset blocks and just get on with.

Where did you test it to come to the conclusion it is razor sharp? I really doubt it is though, with only 1k diamond plate and some compound loaded strop (which was executed incorrectly).
@pscraftydiy

Tested sharpness by shaving hair on my arm, shaved them off in one pass. Thats what razors do and thats sharp enough for what I do.
@diavalus
@diavalus 10 ай бұрын
That's not "razor sharp". Shaving arm hair can be easily achieven with a 1k stone. But if you'd try to actually face shave, then you'd understand why that is not really "razor sharp". Cheers!@@pscraftydiy

@@diavalusI mean the strop technically takes his edge from 1,000 grit to whatever micron compound he was using. So that may make it pretty darn close to a razor. I dunno.
@Ewagg11
@Ewagg11 Ай бұрын
You don’t have to have any really high grit stones to get a hair whittling and face shaving edge you can achieve that with a 1000 grit diamond stone and a 6 and 1 micron strop when you perfect the edge you can get off a 1000 grit stone that is when you can buy high grits for possibly a mirror finish
@diavalus
@diavalus Ай бұрын
@@Ewagg11 high grit compound or stones don’t matter much in this case as they can both achieve similar results if the technique is right. And no, 1k diamond plate followed by 6 um and 1 um won’t get you a razor sharp edge. It will be cutting some hair, but that’s not a razor sharp edge yet. You can cut some hair also after 1k or even 400 grit diamond plate. For most application, such as wood working and knives and other tools, 1k diamond plate followed by 6 um and 1 um or a similar setup will be just fine, but for shaving that is simply not enough, unless you like rough shaving which irritates your skin like hell. It would have been nice and easy if such a simple setup would be enough for a truly razor sharp edge. Unfortunately, this kind of edge would need a lot more refinement and it would require spending a lot of time on the compound to get it to that point, with the risk of introducing new issues. For this reason, razor sharpening uses different techniques and stones to achieve this.

Would it be possible that u have like design plans for this....because if so I would really appreciate them as all I have to sharpen my chisles is a cheap wet stone n guide thingy.....so this would really help
@pscraftydiy

Hi, sorry I don't have any design plans I have just copied the base that came with the Faithfull diamond stone and fitted it onto niece of plywood next to the original. Glued two pieces of beavercraft honing leather with double sided taps on either side of ply wood like you see in the video. One with shiny smooth side of leather up the other with the rougher side of leather. When they both ware out I can just flip them both. The box on top is also made of plywood, simple but joints nothing fancy. I passed the plywood through table saw to cut groove acting as a runner for the sliding lid. The kerf of my blade happens to be very near to the 3mm ply I used for the lid. The stoppers are just simple blocks of ply placed in distance copied from the honing guide. The Faithfull diamond stone is currently on offer on Amazon for very good price. I pad round £50 for mine and then round £15 for vintage eclipse honing guide. Here is the link for the diamond plate www.amazon.co.uk/Faithfull-Tools-FAIDWKIT-Diamond-Sharpening/dp/B015JMIPP0/ref=asc_df_B015JMIPP0/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=208050023643&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=18040930423103383767&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046369&hvtargid=pla-421350526489&psc=1&mcid=966fa1ceeafe30c6847f43addb2515e4&th=1&psc=1

Can you give me the measurements for the angle setting stops from the edge of the base board. You have four of them attached for specific angles.
@pscraftydiy
@pscraftydiy 2 ай бұрын
These measurements are dependent on your honing guide and they should be written on it. On my vintage eclipse guide they are written in the cast on the side. However you can put your chisel or plane iron in a guide and set the angel as per instructions or using digital level like I did. Then transfer the distance onto your sharpening board and that where you need to put your block. Cant think of more accurate way. On the other hand they don't need to be that accurate as long as you always do the same chissles/plane irons on the same jig. It just needs to be repeatable, the same angle every time.

@pscraftydiy

It's called honing guide. It does both chissles and plane irons. Mine is an old original Eclipse I picked up second hand from ebay. But there is all sorts of styles of honing guides available nowadays, cheap or expensive some better than others.

What brand honing oil do you use?
@pscraftydiy

No oil on diamond stone only sometimes on leather when its dry. On the stone I used to use Trend honing fluid but its quite pricey so I use a car window cleaner now as it has anticorrossive additives so wont ruin your stone comes in larger quantities and is much cheaper.
