Raz - the machining and workmanship is absolutely top-notch! You are probably learning so much from this type of extreme build that many 'makers' would never get the experience to learn because of the sheer problems surrounding the power transfer alone. That doesn't even account for trying to keep everything inside of the car's footprint and map out where the parts need to go to make it work. Bravo on an amazing build.
@robertocastillo60022 жыл бұрын
Top noch build as usual, but man, editing is at the same level if not better. The first part of the video and the conversation with the machinist is awesome 😝😝😝, you made my day. Keep pushing Raz!

Thermal expansion on the gears could be a problem, looks like custom one piece pinions joining the two motors on each side would be an alternative. Good work Raz!
@Mad.Man.Marine2 жыл бұрын
What form of expansion are you thinking about? Radial? If you mean the width. Then I can’t see why it would ever be a problem. They are spinning the same direction. Now radially. I could maybe see that as a problem. But it could be adjusted out so the tolerance would be right once they are at running temp. Would just be a little loud while warming up the first few runns
@midship_nc2 жыл бұрын
@@Mad.Man.Marine axial expansion towards each other, I know for a fact those motors do not use thrust bearings and only have two radial ball bearings on the shaft which cannot handle axial loads. The shafts and the gears will expand with heat. It will at minimum create extra drag and convert wattage into heat. Long term it will ruin the bearings in the motors. To deal with this he could use a captured one piece pinion with needle thrust bearings for each pair of motors that floats on the shafts with no set screws and would allow for expansion. This may seem over engineered but I can't help it, I work with bearing tribology, and industrial rotating equipment reliability every day lol.
@Simon-jr2oe2 жыл бұрын
How much would it expand? I don’t rly see it expanding enough to be a problem
@midship_nc2 жыл бұрын
@@Simon-jr2oe a rough formula for stainless thermal shaft for growth is length x temperature rise x .0000065(coefficient for stainless shaft growth) 4.5"x140x0.0000065= .004" Then multiply that by 2 because there are two motors end to end which is over .008" 8 thousandths converted to metric is 0.2mm+ and Raz said there was about a third of a mm clearance between the gears at ambient. Include the growth of the pinion gears themselves, or higher temperature and yes it could be contacting and creating an axial load on bearings not designed for such forces. Additionally these are "permanent" lubricated bearings and that oil will be vaporized by the heat and contribute to additional friction and losses.

Really really impressive, I have to think the middle drive gear is going to get beat on pretty badly. Having some form of mechanical slip clutch in that center gear may save it and still transfer the power.
@user-TJ3652 жыл бұрын
Everyone is speculating about what is going to fail in the drivetrain. I am confident Raz will find the weak link on the first outing. Keep pushing the limits, it’s what makes the hobby so much fun.
@fuhkoffandie2 жыл бұрын
driving down the road and never let your eyes off the gears, some priceless video. that editing was gold. oh yeah, I got a question. I know this sounds a bit excessive, but, are you going to clock those motors, so they're exactly in phase, considering that they're hard locked to each other (no clutches, slippers, etc.)?
@markmmm17372 жыл бұрын
Looks good but I have doubts. Those gears will be stripped due to the power and the tiny area of contact. Personally I would turn around the motors and use 2 spools this will give you 4 times the surface area for the pinions and much less stress on the now doubled spool gears. Hope it works out for you, all the best.

Would you be able to have 2 motors run the left drivetrain and 2 on right? I don't know hardly anything about electric RC's. I take it with programming, the 2 sides could the trimmed to match power???
@midnitejmpr94292 жыл бұрын
Ok I was not expecting the way the motors meshed to the drivetrain to be like this….. what an absolute unit
@rajgill75762 жыл бұрын
Im looking at this already and chassis flex will be changing your mesh dynamically. I would say put another carbon plate to stiffen everything above the motors as well, like a brace. It will help immensely
@bundles19782 жыл бұрын
agreed, I also have my doubts that the pinion can take all that torque. otherwise a sick build. cant wait to see it run. better feed power in slow
@otm6462 жыл бұрын
You're always going to be fighting flex, he really needs to pause and redesign the motor mount assembly to be monolithic. That's the only way you're going to get the required stiffness out of it..

I've never seen 4 motors to one pinion. Really curious to see how this works. Usually KISS is the way to go (keep it simple stupid) using 2 bigger motors ... blah blah. But its definitely cool to try new things, and can't wait to see what happens
@Greywolf742 жыл бұрын
This is a really cool build for bragging rights but that thing isnt anywhere near 60HP. At best The quad motors are putting out somewhere between 35-40HP collectively. Thats assuming that each of those 1650kV motors on 8S consumes somewhere in the neighborhood of 6500-7500 watts each. Castle doesn't tell us the wattage ratings on their motors but a Hobbywing 1650kV on 6S is rated at 5700W. The really big TPPower motors can get up to around 9000W each so going somewhere in the middle of that (which I think is being a bit generous) at 7500W is only about 40HP. If you calculate for 7000W each then you end up at about 37.5HP total. Once you start taking other factors in to account like voltage sag, efficiency, etc youre probably looking at something closer to 30HP for all 4 motors combined. Id like to know how you arrived at 60HP.
@S3irun2 жыл бұрын
I think he did the following, simple calculation: If 2 motors are rated for 30HP, 4 motors add up to 60HP.
@Greywolf742 жыл бұрын
@@S3irun Yeah but where did the 15HP per motor rating come from? It didnt come from Castle.
@trevorlaquale66022 жыл бұрын

@trevorlaquale66022 жыл бұрын
@@Greywolf74 just looked it up, website says can easily reach 10hp range so there not claiming 15 but im shocked
@Greywolf742 жыл бұрын
@@trevorlaquale6602 10HP I think is still a stretch because I dont think thats taking things like efficiency, voltage sag, etc in to consideration but that number is at least in line with the upper end of what my HP calculations came out to based on Wattage approximations. Im curious though where you found the 10HP rating at because Castle doesnt list that info on their webpage, or at least not anywhere on the page that has the motor specs. You got a link to where you found that at? Im betting if you could Dyno a single 1650kV motor on 8S it would only dyno at maybe 6-8HP per motor.
