Daniel Lopatin, operating as Oneohtrix Point Never, makes music that seemingly defies categorization. The son of Russian immigrants and professional musicians, Lopatin’s work is loosely connected to the noise circuit, but also draws influences from library records, jazz-fusion and his love-hate relationship with new age music.
In his lecture at the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy, Lopatin discusses his musical background, his megalomania, his fear of being railroaded by drums and why he loves his old Juno 60 synthesizer.

Dan seems like one of those really cool guys who can both sit and have a totally casual, friendly, bullshit chat, but also super-deep hours-long discussions about metaphysics and shit. Like someone who is humble and honest on the surface and has a lot going on behind the scenes. I like people like that.

1:18:51 This is argued by many to be the founding track that started the genre of Vaporwave, all the way back from 2009. Daniel's impact on modern music is profoundly underrated.
@halfdonut6505
@halfdonut6505 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe not profoundly underrated, I think people who know of him recognize him for the genius he is. No doubt that Daniel is an incredible musician, but vaporwave is kinda dead at this point, ruined by the many that tried (and failed) to recreate what he did. OPN has moved onto way bigger and better things.

@@halfdonut6505 like most songs in the top 40 don't have recognizable samples/interpolations. it's the logical next step in the whole tape music -> sound collage -> and now vaporwave evolution using recorded music as an instrument. incredibly influential to the cultural consciousness. hip hop sampling was a sort of inbetween state, and the explosion of vaporwave really opened up a lot of people's ideas of interpolation and music based on nostalgia

loved this interview. I think this was really genuine, not everyone is this vivacious -tv-personality that needs to be cracking jokes every other remark. As a fellow artist you can tell a lot is going on in his mind and he tries his best to articulate it in an insightful and inspiring way. He's not trying to be anything he isn't and I respect that way more than some producer trying to act omniscient in social interaction. This isn't Jimmy Kimmel Live guys...

wr4 Daniel Lopatin seems so in touch with his mental faculties, as if his knack for evaluation is constantly refining his momentary decisions with such a pace that he just knows better than to "just say it". That's so commendable. I think it's that kind of tenacity which sculpts true greatness. In the words of the man himself, "I don’t think there’s ever a moment where I’m just like, yeah, that’ll work... everything’s really naked and in clear view (in his compositions) so I want it to be very specific. When I make a decision, I want to have a sense of why even if I don’t necessarily want to tell people why."

In this era- why did Red Bull interview so many ambient artists? Seems like an interesting strategy for a company that sells energy drinks.
@jamesd.6979
@jamesd.6979 3 жыл бұрын
That is actually a fantastic question.. my best guess is a) they realized the electronic / ambient music genre as a whole is seeing a resurgence these last few years and they want to keep their content topical and accessible, and b) electronic / ambient music is often deceivingly intricate, so Red Bull is using these sort of examples to demonstrate the mental alertness / clarity effects that they promote in Red Bull ads/commercials/etc. But that is purely speculation on my part.
@imDezrt
@imDezrt 3 жыл бұрын
It's not so much ambient as much as it is niche music in general. Red Bull's massive endowment gives them a lot of power to sponsor creative real estate all the way down to the more obscure stuff. Same goes for sports--they're one of the biggest sponsors in action sports or ping pong or whatever else outside of the mainstream soccer / football / etc. Smart strategy on their part considering niche tends to grow into something bigger with time. They're getting their money's worth for sure

It wasn't a great game, but for some reason I loved playing it in the morning before school. It's crazy how one little mental image or passing reference can totally unlock so many memories and emotions. I am a grown ass man trying to type this out with tears in my eyes. Unbelievable. I know it's an odd comment but I absolutely had to share it with somebody.

Been one of my favourite aspects of the OPN project is how rich and evocative the names for literally all his stuff is, and how it aids to immerse me more in the world the song creates for me. I am an addict now. I am so sleepy until I drink 1 or two energy drinks, and I drink it to be normal. It's been 3 years I drink more than 8 coffe/energy drink on daily basis. If I don't drink it or after one or two hours I've drinken it I feel really depressed and apathetic. I've also some hearth problem, sometimes I see everything black and without oxygen. Coffeine made my habit of going to sleep at 6.30 A.M. When I am with friends at night they know that I am gonna drink a coffee or become a zombie so often someone used take some coffee in a thermos. No I bought coffeine pills to avoid this problem. Don't ever abuse, those are just little problems I can still live a decent life but trust me don't abuse of it.

Why is everyone criticizing this interviewer? I thought he did well. I wished he had a little more energy but he asked great questions.

This fucking interviewer (and I don’t mind his “vibe”) is cutting Daniel in the best moments of his answers and asking his silly written questions instead of going with the flow and LETTING THE MAN TALK.

i think he is the interviewer from Resident Advisor, he always does that, interrupt and make assumptions that the interviewee always has to correct, he did that with Donatto Dozzy and Ricardo Villalobos

28:10 mentions: z-boson by doppplereffekt kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrN3p9Sm0tzNoZc.html One of the greatest art duos of all time without becoming contrived or ironic: a note on doppplereffekt : their aesthetic is a credit to socialist values and will stand as a historical artifact to lost futures. I am not sure what Lapotin stands for he is too cool and indifferent. All feelings towards him I owe to my reverence for his music, but thank him dearly for this musical morsel.

Interviewer @24:10 wondering if he remembered to turn the stove off. Audience @24:55 overanalyzing sitting positions due to ingesting copious amounts of high grade marijuana edibles and sedatives. Laughing my ass off at these comments about the audience being on sedatives and opiates and being in dire need of a red bull.

I sweat to god, I feel like the audience had better questions than the interview, he looked like he didn’t even give a shit, luckily Daniel has a personality but omfg, he’s lucky that Daniel kinda went on tangents or this shit would have been so short
