Well as a fan of the Buckeyes, I'm not surprised. Ohio State would do that. Go undefeated until they meet an SEC team in the National Championship. I still remember 2006, 2007 and 2020. But at least OSU won a title in 2014 by beating Alabama in the playoffs to get there and defeat Oregon.

Well ack-shually ☝🤓there was a national championship game in '98, this was during the brief "Bowl Alliance" championship era (I think that's what it was called). Brief because for some reason the Rose Bowl was not a part of it, and that caused some controversy in '97 when #1 Michigan opted to play in the Rose Bowl instead of the National Championship game. That's why you were projected to play in the Orange Bowl earlier in the season for the National Championship when you were #3, because OSU was #2 and it was generally expected (even before Michigan) that B1G and PAC-10 schools would opt for the Rose Bowl because the "National Championship game" technically didn't determine anything as it wasn't recognized by the NCAA. It did work out fine for them, they still got their National Championship title that they share with Nebraska, who only won one major selector, and only because they were contracted to select the winner of the Championship game.
