• ② RC 1/4 SCALE 9 CYLIN...
ian redshaw flew the avro 504 in the video ,the builder and owner andy johnston kindly gave me these details -
Engine details:
¼ scale
9 cylinder four stroke
33mm bore, cast iron liners of 1mm wall thickness and aluminium finned barrels
45mm stroke
347cc, compression ratio 5.6:1
Super unleaded petrol with belts'n'braces 50:1 oil mix. (I use Bel-Ray HR1 fully synthetic ester 2-stroke racing oil.)
Total loss force fed oil system via engine driven oil pump, approx. 30cc per 10 min flight using Bel-Ray
Rpm range 700-3500
Prop. is 27 ½" diameter x approx. 23" pitch, period scale blade shape made by EAT propellers, sadly now no longer since the death of Eric Thomas.
Weight 7kg
Avro 504K details:
¼ scale David Boddington/Nexus plans scaled up to 27% (to give sufficient cowl clearance for engine)
Wingspan 116", 2.95m
O/A length 100", 2.54m
Covered in Linen Solartex, top surfaces sprayed with Flair Spectrum PC 10 Brown
All markings freehand with Humbrol
Two coats Ronseal Diamond Hard Matt varnish brushed on all over (isn't affected by oil/petrol or nitro glow fuel )
All up weight 23kg
Futaba 12FG TX 2.4Gig
Futaba R-6014 HS RX x 2
SM Services Opto Isolators x 2
Ignition and RX batteries 2000mAhr Eneloop
Power to servos 3,300 NmH subC via opto isolators
Servos are a mix of Hitec metal geared and Futaba, all non-digital
16 ferrite rings to combat the interference from the unshielded vintage ignition system
The Avro was designed around the Bentley with the provision for exchanging it for a Zenoah 62. The Avro's maiden flight was on 31st March 2012 with the 62 (and 3kg lead up front, the difference in weight between it and the Bentley) to prove the airframe and it was a great success so a further six flights were made to complete the CAA tests on that day before making the swap and further tests.
The Bentley engine build started in August 2004, it's test run was 9th January 2008 and the maiden flight in the Avro was 6th April 2012.
There are no noticeable effects of gyroscopic precession from the rotating Bentley affecting the handling unduly, just a slight difference in left and right which may be due to torque and the coarse-pitch propeller. Twenty-two flights with Bentley to date (23/07/2013).
Regards
Andy Johnston

Wow! First time I have seen anyone actually fly their miniature rotary engine. I have only ever seen them running on a stand, which is amazing enough, but to see one actually flying an equally amazing scale aircraft is a double treat!! Thanks for posting this video.

I was there at Cosford on Saturday. This plane for me was easily the most magnificent one there and then (no offence to other modellers out there!). And Andy, the owner, what a character! He saw me and my friend "drooling" over his plane, so he and his friends kindly let us cross the fence to have a closer look at his plane and we spent good 20min talking to him and his friends about his masterpiece. And boy, what a masterpiece that is!

+Skysurfer I had never even seen or heard of this engine configuration. It sounds like a rotary/Wankel engine, but the rotary in its name only refers to the spinning of the cylinders right? Beautiful craftsmanship!

Skysurfer it works similar to stationary radials with the exception it's mounted backwards. With that instead of the crank bolting to a prop, it's mounted to the firewall. The cylinders fire as they pass the ignition point. Was an interesting design none the less.

Please add some technical details in the video description!!! Unfortunately there was a heavy wind, which taked away the good sound in flight. As well as too many other running engines on ground and in the air. Maybe you will have another chance to shoot some images of that beauty. *liked and added to my new created playlist of WWI* Best regards, Horst

@Engflyer1
@Engflyer1 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Darth, When you build from scratch, it isn't too expensive. What you see in the video cost approx. £1000 UK. excluding te radio gear. Of course, the machine tools in my workshop are expensive but they go on for ever and have a good resale value. My time spent building is not a cost factor as it is my hobby. Andy

Andy Johnston I think he thinks it's a real one.
@Darthbelal
@Darthbelal 9 жыл бұрын
phil123711 No, I'm well aware it's a model aircraft. For Andy, it's a hobby and no big deal, for the vast majority of people, it'd be outright impossible to replicate that plane and engine. Andy can do as he pleases with his creation, it's his right. I think it's a fantastic representation of early aviation history as it shows the thought process of early aircraft engineers. I'd love to see that MODEL in an aeronautical museum and I believe most museums would love to have that plane for a display.
@bernardw4842
@bernardw4842 7 жыл бұрын
Darth, I'd have said that ideally it should be seen flying, not just displayed in a building. But I agree, I do hope in the future it's still available for people to see. What an achievement! I've also scratch built RC models, though not even beginning to compare to this. Once you've got the workspace and tools as Andy says, it's not so expensive, mostly it's time and labour. For me, building in itself is very rewarding and I love it. The goal isn't just to get it finished and go flying, you really get something from a project, start to finish. The feeling after all that work of seeing it FLY, with you on the controls, is awesome. Pre-built or ARF (almost ready to fly/finish/fart-around-with-for-another-6-months) just isn't the same, I enjoy making and fitting every part accurately. Plus, most ARF's I've seen aren't that great. Building your own, you get to select every piece of wood for every part, as balsa varies greatly in density, stiffness and weight, sometimes you want the lightest, sometimes stiffer or in between. Certain glues are better for certain jobs, those 3rd-world sweat shopa tend to use one type (usually hot glue gun glue which isn't that great, and it's heavy), and you can just imagine some overseer screaming at the poor workers to save every gram of it. They're mostly using low-grade light ply now, and that stuff just shatters if (when!) you crash. My simple trainer using ordinary balsa had 1 bad nose-first power dive into the ground, and 1 lesser crash. Both times it was repaired relatively easily, but I saw someone crash the same way soon after with a factory ARF made of lite-ply, and it was matchsticks, completely destroyed. Part of my model's surviving was down to planning for it. I realise most people don't have the time, skills or facilities to make models, or just don't want to, and it did take a lot of time, labour, learning and buying more tools, but I loved it and love the result even more. Now I've got those tools and my workspace, it's far easier to build the next ones, and the experience means now it takes a fraction of the time. Plus, it was a perfect education for repairing your own crash damage. It does cost more to build because you're buying the materials and hardware separately, but once you have that sheet of aircraft ply and a bulk pack of control horns etc., it's more economical from then on. Buying a replacement ARF wing costs real money, whereas a repair might need part of a cheap sheet of balsa and a little glue, so in the long run it's economical to do your own. But it doesn't really matter what it costs. I believe if you love building then you'll make it economical somehow or other. I just love it anyway.

@peterworsley4699

No Sir, think carefully. The pistons go up and down relative to the cylinders - of course. But relative to the outside world or anything else they describe an off centre circle.
@453421abcdefg12345
@453421abcdefg12345 6 жыл бұрын
Nick Fury: No ,the pistons do not go up and down, so there is no reciprocation at all, the pistons are stationary, with the crankcase/cylinders rotating, if you look at an animation of a rotary engine you will see that this is so.
