This video shows step by step how I make simple wooden blocks for my own semi-scale sailing models which are based on a scale of one inch / foot (1:12). The methods shown can be used to make double blocks and blocks with beckets as well, (such as for the throat halyard on a gaff rig).
You can see my boats sailing at: • Sailing Scratchbuilt R...

I used to use paperclips as the hook/strop much easier and they are preformed sometimes when making that type of block, otherwise I used rope to make the full eye going around the whole block, and my blocks had brass pins for the roller (instead of the wooden piece you inserted) if they were very small, otherwise I used plastic rollers from old stereos or VHS machines belt systems and found they had various sizes so were a great help.

Hi Gary, Just wanted to say that I have recently spent a few happy hours making some small blocks according to your instructions, I really enjoy your videos and the charming low key but detailed descriptions, I have been building model yachts for a few years now but am always finding there is something new to learn. Thank you for the sharing of your knowledge and experience. Regards Tony from Australia.

I like the idea. As far as i know they use beech for handles, at least in Europe. I'm truly enjoying your videos, keep them coming. Cheerio from Ireland

I have a 20 yo son, who is obsessed with sailing ships. He's a very high functioning autistic (graduated HS as Valedictorian). We're enjoying your videos, as we're planning to build an rc sailboat. Subscribed.

i injoy your shows, and how you use what is on hand items to bild your ships, im in the army and use my spear time bilding a RC salile boat. Iturnd my room in to a small work shop. and use mostley what was on hand, using ammo crates for parts of the hall, bandoliers for the sails, spent cartridges for some of the brass parts. it still neads some work befor my ship sales, but you have help me out

So you don’t need a wheel pulley for the movement?
@sailtails2775
@sailtails2775 3 жыл бұрын
No, you don't really need moving parts. The loads on these models are light enough that the "dumb" blocks work just fine.
