My Dad and I went out to Edwards once and saw the space shuttle land. It was the first flight after the Challenger disaster. That was many years ago but I remember that we could see it 'falling' from a long ways up and it looked like a big rock falling out of the sky. They did a circle on the way down then flared it radically to land. It was amazing to see it. It was a clear crisp day out in the desert with lots of people cheering. I will never forget it.
@optimizticpizza83956 жыл бұрын
Lidmotor did you know the crew of the challenger actually survived the initial explosion? But died when they hit the ocean at 200+mph

Lol i think its better to use a c4 with wings
@agsystems82205 жыл бұрын
@@adrianvangsmo3477 nah, C4 is safe to handle. The hydrazine left in the shuttle when it landed made full body protection a must.

Very cool, but the flight area doesn't seem ideal for these experiments. Lots of houses and trees, making it harder to recover the model. Did you consider adding rudder (or it isn't of much use..)?

I love all your videos and all. but just thought I should throw in there that you probably shouldn't fly around areas that are so populated...

+Christopher Barron I agree and was surprised more people hasn't said the same,safety should always come first no matter what we as RC hobbyist fly,smh.
@drumbum9628 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Barron I completely agree. Especially since this is a testing scenario. He really didn't know if he would be able to control the aircraft without testing it. Very poorly chosen location for testing.... To much negative going on right now for us guys trying to be safe about things as is. With as many hits as this guy gets, he needs to be more responsible about flying. That said, good stuff. I always enjoy his videos, just hope he doesn't get made an example of one day doing stuff like this. KFM

+Max Wow man, very ignorant if that's what you actually think. Doesn't matter what material it's made out of or how much damage it can do if it crashes. It's got a camera on it and that's all it needs to freak some tard out that only watches the news and doesn't care about this hobby. To much bad press going on right now against us already. KFM
@Cdbarron7278 жыл бұрын
Yea not my intention to start any issues..but I just saw this video and the first thing running through my head is..."Not safe"...I love this hobby and it has had nothing but bad publicity lately. Not to mention that it's illegal to drop "anything" from an rc aircraft according to the newly appointed Drone Enforcement Board (not sure what they called it) that has till Nov 20th to come up with a way to make people register rc planes. So after watching that news conference about the drones...then seeing this video and thinking that....and then seeing all the comments giving him a "good job man..keep it up" ...i just thought a lot of people weren't noticing that it wasn't a good idea.

I'm not usually so strict about things like this but because it was a very experimental design going at high speeds perhaps you should have avoided flying in a residential area.
@1grizzlyrizzo7 жыл бұрын
Mats Moreau I have to agree, it's great that they are trying things out but I think they need to be taken under the wing of someone whom has access to a suitable testing area, it's clear they have talent and drive but my God this could have gone bad real quick.
@tracydillon61606 жыл бұрын
You should edit the "very experimental" part to read "highly unstable". This is a bad place to fly anything like this.
@hekikuu6 жыл бұрын
Especially since there are these huge green fields around, perhaps just a few hundred meters away so distance cannot be an excuse.

Frank Stain Why are you so defensive?
@ExperimentalAirlines8 жыл бұрын
That's badass! Your tenacity is over the top. I can learn from this as well as some previous experiences with delta wing planes blowing out of yaw, I think due to the central vertical stabilizer being blanked out by the fuselage and/or wings at high alpha. A spiral results. Putting wingtip verticals seems to do the trick, like most of the experimental lifting bodies have. I don't know how the Space Shuttle got away with it except that the VS is hella tall on it.
@j69chevelle8 жыл бұрын
+ExperimentalAirlines The surface area of the Orbiters delta wing is far less than a traditional delta wing and are swept at a far more aggressive angle than flying wing which allows the VS to be placed further away from the CG which allows for better control authority. Additionally, the Orbiter VS uses differential drag (split rudder) as opposed to the conventional rudder.

The gliders you where copying, including the space shuttle, have wing shapes designed for supersonic flight - that curved delta, like Concorde. So I wasn't surprised when a more conventional delta wing worked better. I am surprised you got usable stability out of it. Great video - please do more! :o)

Looks like you had a heap of fun. Something I plan to do with my kids is wind tunnel testing. I plan to make a rough rig, for the test plane to pivot on its CG. Then find a quiet length of road a hang you ring out of the car window and for trim testing that way. Just something different and a bit of fun to.

Me and my friend have already done this. He actually has an EDF 747 and we built a scale space shuttle. After getting the cg right (it had to be pretty far back) I was able to get really nice flares on the shuttle. It also flew quite well all this was even on a smaller scale, than your attempt. Try it without the gyro, deltas are usually stable.
