I disagree. Bulk recapping doesn't always fix all of the problems, plus if he recapped the radio, it would probably require a full realignment; i.e. extra work and possibly more cost to the customer. I am actually glad he didn't just dive in and replace all the caps at once.

I restored a 1946 RCA floor model. Worked like a dream with that 10inch speaker. Really enjoyed the old radio. i don't know many antique radio restorers that like to restring a radio. Multiple wraps around Multiple shafts with proper spring tension makes an angry technician. 🤣

In my 40 years repairing these I have restrung probably close to 100 radios! Not super fun but the results are worth it. Thanks Barry.

That radio is certainly lasting well past it's warranty period! And nice to see so many of the old components still in it - really keeps the radios character. If it only sees little use then i don't see the point of replacing all the caps. But, if the unit was mine, i would have insisted on the lamp being replaced with another filament lamp, the cold and harsh white light from the led simply does not match the period. Changing to a white led like that changes the visual character of the radio too much.

Steve, your customer didn't want to do a re-cap..?? I love doing re-caps, yes I know people like to keep as much of the original components..... But, just a thought.

Please replace all the wax capacitors. They may be leaky and let DC current pass through.

Try a model 56X5... from 1949 on nostalgia air web site... was hoping you would check ESR on those wax caps....

I'm sure total cap replacement was recommended, but it ultimately depends on the customers decision & some folks like to keep stuff as close to original as possible. Even with the possibility of catastrophe lol
