I've just read the final report on the accident. Based on CVR and FDR data, the crew were distracted by the failure of the landing gear to retract and an unruly 2.5 inch passenger, and they failed to monitor the airspeed. A stall ensued but the PF failed to properly respond to stall warnings and stick shaker activation. Other factors include pilot fatigue and low pay.

It can be expensive. But honestly, you can enjoy it on a budget as well. I started in the hobby about a year and a half ago. I have several planes and practice flying on Real Flight Simulator. If you’re interested in a great, inexpensive starter plane, that wouldn’t hurt anyone if it was crashed and is easily repairable even if you crash, I started with the XK J3 Cub. It’s has a gyro and SAFE and sells for right around $80-$100. And comes with a Transmitter, which jot all do, as you’ll learn if you stay in the hobby.

@zidge1751 silk shoots dont weight anything, and all you would need is one extra servo to open a hatch. The air would do the rest. Would add a couple lbs, thats nothing on these big planes and would save thousands of dollars in damage not to mentionthe hundreds of hours of work to build something this scale.

If you don’t have the reaction time to recover from an engine out with a twin - I’m thinking you won’t have the reaction time to flip the switch for a chute. First RC twin I had I lost due to engine out. Shoulda just chopped The throttle and treated it like dead stick... instead I went full throttle and lost it due to uneven thrust and lack of speed/control authority.

As soon as he added some bank which required slightly more back pressure the inside wing changed its mind about flying. Damn shame. I have neen working on an aoa sensor small enough for these models but there must be a reason they dont tend to have them.

When I first got into RC I quickly learned that building and flying were only a small part of the hobby / sport, say 25%. The other 75% was/is all about repair and rebuilding. The bulk of it was spending the time rebuilding aircraft and/or making minor / major repairs. In the case of this crash it's pretty much a "rebuild from scratch" deal. The damage was pretty bad.

@evanwindom3265
@evanwindom3265 Жыл бұрын
@@wuffa4503 People forget that in a turn, some of your lift is converted to the horizontal. Give up too much airspeed in the turn, and you're in trouble. Sometimes people will overshoot on the turn and try to crank it back to the runway heading. At low speed and low altitude, that's a recipe for trouble. There's a reason that landing is considered the most dangerous phase of flight. You have to manage airspeed, power, flaps, decent rate, turns, runway alignment, all of that at once. As a pilot, I think that in many ways, landing an actual airplane is easier than RC. You have instruments. You have the "seat of the pants" feedback. Your POV is always in line with the plane's flightpath. Setting up a stabilized approach in a Cessna 172 is a lot easier than in an RC aircraft.

Should have descended through the turn to final, trading some altitude for speed. This would have avoided the stall and left him lined up for final and a nice deadstick landing. The plane was OBVIOUSLY losing speed at the end of the downwind run, yet pilot did nothing about it and simply continued with his normal approach, all but assuring the stall and crash! Pilot error, 100%!

@shelbyseelbach9568
@shelbyseelbach9568 Жыл бұрын
@@jordancoleman2402 by decending through the truth to final, he would've been able to reduce throttle, allowing the decent to provide speed. The plane was absolutely savable. The real problem is that we don't typically practice emergency situations, ever. The only time we ever see a failure is in real life. I actually have my simulator set to throw out random dead sick and out of trim conditions. I know how to fly under perfect conditions, I'm more concerned about learning to fly calmly under abnormal conditions.

My theory: engine failed/lost power. The other engine still had power. Instead of idling, landing straight ahead he tried to turn back. Too slow in the turn - stall - spin.
@sblack48
@sblack48 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think there was an engine failure. He just turned to hard and stalled. If there gad been an engine failure there would have been a ton of yaw and there wasn’t. It was a classic stall spin.

@jakobusstrauss1293
@jakobusstrauss1293 3 жыл бұрын
Same would happen if you turn into the dead engine (in this case possibly the left engine failed and that could explain why he lost speed too) or if you use too much rudder in the turn which would cause it to skid and spin in the same direction as the bank. You are always safer using too little rudder than too much.
@wesleydonnelly2141
@wesleydonnelly2141 3 жыл бұрын
@@jakobusstrauss1293 Agreed. I believe it may have also been a freak gust of wind that made it lose a lot of lift as it was banking too sharply and using too much rudder ?? Like a combination of bad events all happening at same time maybe ? Such a shame! The flight had gone so well up to that point!

@@wesleydonnelly2141 very possible. That is the problem with flying RC. We have got no feedback about rudder coordination and angle of attack. We have to judge it all by what looks right and most of the time our eyes deceive us.

Indeed, losing lift through exceeding the maximum angle of attack (AOA) of the wing (inside wing stalling first through less speed through the air - inducing a spin to the port) exacerbated by low speed + excessive bank (reduced lift), causing tip stall, AFAIK?
