One of the 11 times I saw them live, either in Dallas or Austin, Ænema was their closing encore. Before they started the song, Maynard talked about how badly he had to piss. He went on to finish the set with this song, but changed the lyrics from “Learn to swim” to “Gotta Piss!” Lol... went well with the “flush it all away” theme. Gotta love it.

@@SkindrixX you must’ve been to a lot of the same shows as me. My first Tool show (and first concert ever) was 2001 Lateralus Tour at Reunion Arena when Osseus Labyrint came out as the schism duo and did contortionism strung up 30 feet in the air. Since the , if the came to Dallas or Austin, I went to every show. Even the SMU show. And fuck me I was tripping way too hard at that one!!! Lol. Don’t even get me started. But man, I don’t know if you went to that show, it was the “mini-tour” that Tool did warming up for the real 10KDays tour and went to really tiny venues that they’d never get to play otherwise. It was at McFarlin Auditorium at SMU which is like 2,300 seats. It was like seeing Tool at a high school auditorium and I was in the 4th row. Absolutely insane. I prefer Live Tool and Ecstasy though because it lets me keep my head straight, never gets too intense, I can remember it clearly afterwards, and the emotional/empathy enhancing qualities of MDMA just makes me really FEEL the music that much more. So intensely sometimes I feel like I’d just explode. Shrooms can be way to distracting IMO, and the anticipation of having to wait and wait for the band to start can be a bit much when tripping hard. I’ve never been on LSD though, and would love to try that, since LSD is a lot smoother on me than shrooms can be.

As much as Maynard says he doesn’t like LA, if it wasn’t for LA would never gotten the baddest band in music history. LA is not the problem it’s people like Maynard James Keenan who came from the Midwest. My coworkers who complain about LA and the traffic are all from the Midwest or from the rest of the USA. I usually blame them lol I was born and raised here and LA is a place where there is always something to get into and you can spend half the day at a sunny beach then in the mountains. Maynard is actually Referring to Celebrities and the Rick and Infamous. Can’t say I blame him since you can run into celebrities everyday like I did him. Met him at a Wine Tasting in Silverlake which is a small city next to Hollywood. He was there peddling his wine. Also met Danny at the Pavillions on PCH, he was with his daughters and was wearing a Yellow Kobe Bryant #8 Jersey. But i agree flush Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Century City, and Culver City down the toilet lol

As if Maynard would EVER be saying that.

I’m not saying you’re wrong about the lyrics, they never used to released lyrics until Fear Innoculum. Taking the lyrics how you want to us part of what makes Tool, Tool. And I respect your interpretation and how you hear the song. And I know the Bill Hicks bit by heart and you’re right about the Hell-A part, obviously. Buuuuuut that being said, I really still think he’s simply saying “LA”. Most specifically because of seeing them live 11 times and the fact that “call” and “LA” has a linking “L” sound in the enunciation. If he were to put an “H” in between those L’s it would be clearly present. And I specifically mean this in the live setting too. If he were consciously saying “Hell-A” you would hear it much more clearly when he sings it live than the album because on that chorus he really does enunciate much more clearly when singing it live. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbCon7CpvM_Hd6s.html for example this is a pretty decent audio from 2014 and to me it’s pretty clear that he’s enunciating “Ell-A” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bK13fZekz5jWfmg.html and here’s one from 2016 that sounds even more clear to me. I just really think that with Maynard’s amazing voice and pretty clear enunciation, if he were actually singing “Hell-A” live, it wouldn’t be ambiguous at all. You’d clearly hear the “H” and in fact he’d make it a point to really stress it. It wouldn’t even be a question. But IMO he’s clearly singing “LA” Really not trying to argue or change your mind, and I do totally get why you think that and why he would be saying “Hell-A” as opposed to LA. Just stating my point of view from a fanatic who’s hear the song thousands of time and seen them play it live 11 times. But hey. You do you.
@RDMusicExchange
@RDMusicExchange 2 жыл бұрын
Hi man, thanks for your comments (and thanks for not just shouting at me😉 ). Those videos are awesome, thanks for sharing. I still hear "Hell-A". I still also he "call it" rather than what the lyric sites have a "call LA". I think for some of us it'll be the music version of the blue dress-gold dress thing! At the end of the day we are all Tool fans, and that's the main thing. 😊 Thanks for watching. In future Tool videos I'll just be rocking out :)
@plexus
@plexus 2 жыл бұрын
@@RDMusicExchange yeah. Like I said, wasn’t trying to argue or say you’re wrong or anything. Just putting my opinion on the topic down. Tool has never released official lyrics with their albums until Fear Inoculum. And Maynard has specifically stated in interviews that the reason why he never wanted to was to give the fans their own opportunity to make their own choices and interpretations that they connect with on a personal level. He even basically says that any interpretation is valid and he’d never impose what his initial intentions were on writing the song over someone’s own interpretation. So to each their own, especially with Tool’s music. That’s what makes their music so special and why people connect with them on such a deep, personal level. Because while it may be based on a specific event or issue in Maynard’s actual life, he writes his lyrics on a very distilled, archetypal way, that it can be approached from so many angles and viewpoints that it becomes more universal than a singular experience.

By the way. It’s also pronounced “Aah-nem-uh” not “enema”. I know you might be saying enema to differentiate that the spelling of the Album and the Song are different, the album being “Ænima” and the song being “Ænema”, and both clearly being the combination of the words “Anima” and “Enema”, but they just say it like the word “Anima” from the Jungian archetypes. If you hear the band say the word in interviews or whatever wether it’s referring to the album or the song, they pronounce both as anima.

@@RDMusicExchange I guess you would have to say TOOL is looser overseas because they are the ones putting up the signs demanding it. I've seen them 5 times since 2006. Personally I think it sucks but my statement is true. Maybe it's a venue difference (stadium vs arena?) or maybe it's our fucked up and corrupted legal system. 🤔

Greeting to both of you!! My today's suggestion (as a new subscriber) is a song entitled "We Died In 2012", from the French Canadian band called "So-Fi". On this one, you will hear a beautiful warm angelic female voice, surrounded by an Industrial/Metal universe: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qKynjcZ40uCyiWQ.html

personal favorite from tool... oh and by the way, i gave it a careful listen since your insistence... and no... it's definitely LA... i know you're married to the idea because it feels like personal insight, pioneer of the ear, so you're stuck defending it to the death but just know you're wrong

No probs. I know he doesn't overly emphasise the H (which would be hard to do), but bearing in mind all the other points (Bill Hicks & the un-Maynard lyric) I'm pretty sure that I'm right. But it's cool if you disagree. Thanks for watching. Cheers

When you slow down the speed of the video and listen to the words. He doesn't say Hell-A. you can't even hear the break for the word Hell. Now it's not a secret Maynard doesn't like LA and California and he does live in Arizona and owns property that he would like to be turned into a bay after California falls off into the Sea. So you must be wrong in assuming he has taken this song from a comedy routine. One thing about Maynard he is very original and except in few cases uses other words from other people. Listen again the word Hell is not in the sentence. Sorry!

The song literally references Arizona Bay with is from the Bill Hicks skit, so yes, he is using a lyric/line inspired by someone else. From the same routine as Hell-A. But it’s cool if you don’t agree, but I don’t think your reasoning holds up compared to mine. Cheers

@@deeb7487 The phrase "Arizona bay" has been around since the 60's not since Bill Hicks was even born. If you know any history of California you would know it suffers from Earth Quakes. and the phrase means that California might fall off into the sea from all the shaking on the San Andreas Fault. As a kid back in the 60's we all said Arizona Bay. and all of said Bill who? oh yeah not born yet. Still no Nell in the sound clips.

Ok. I understand. But the sentiment is the same. Adding an H doesn't change the fact that he's talking about L.A. which is fine. I live here & in many ways it's a POS.
