Rob Boyce got his nickname “Sluggo” when he was 16 skateboarding downtown, named after a popular character in the Nancy Cartoon Strip.
Early on, Sluggo caught the eye of Stacy Peralta of Powell Peralta skateboards, who introduced him to Henry Hester, a legend from Southern California who owned the skateboard company G&S. Rob became a pro skateboarder, riding for Real skateboards under Jim Thiebeau. Then, Sluggo started skateboarding for World Industries. Sluggo was also the first skateboarder ever do a backflip on a vert ramp and a backflip to fakie.
One day, Sluggo is skateboarding with Alex Chalmers at a skatepark, and is approached to play Dean Cain’s stunt double in the movie future sport.
Sluggo now works full time as a stuntman in the Canadian film industry, and has starred in movies such as Chronicles of Riddick, I Robot, the A Team, Fantastic Four, Night at the Museum, Alien Vs. Predator, and more.
An iconic member of the original RDS crew, Moses Itkonen is known for being one of the first to get confrontational when security guards showed up on scene. Moses gets on Powell Peralta in 1989, and gets an am spotlight in the first 411. After this, he’s approached by the Real Team Manager, who wanted them to be the next pro rider for the Real team.
Colin Mckay grows up skateboarding in Vancouver with Rick Howard, and looking up to Danny Way. In the early 90’s, Colin is at the regionals for the NSA Am Series, and the Plan B team shows up. Colin ends up winning everything, joining the Plan B team. with the death of founder Mike Ternasky, McKay takes over Plan B with Danny Way. After trying to run the company for a time, Colin dissolves Plan B, and migrates to Girl skateboards in 1998 at the age of 21. He later reforms Plan B with Danny Way.
Sluggo noted The Red Dragons have been around as a crew since 1988. There used to be a whole lot of us, like over 25. It’s just a big, huge gang of kids who skated all day and smashed shit all night. The team included Rob “Sluggo” Boyce, Colin McKay, Sean “Teenager” Laidlaw, George and Gordon Faulkner, Mike Chalmers, John Munroe, Justin Lukin, Shane Ioki, Sam Devlin, as well as a number of others.
At the time in Vancouver, there was an Asian gang by the name of the Red Dragons who had come up in the news as being responsible for several vicious attacks. One time in the streets of Vancouver, when they were getting kicked out of a spot, OG team member Sean Laidlaw yelled at Security “Red Dragons! We will kill you!”
At one of the early slam city jam contests in Vancouver, Sluggo and other members of the RDS skate supply skateboard team made a hundred T-Shirts and handed them out to all their friends. Anyone from Kris Markovich to Kareem Campbell was wearing an RDS t-shirt.
RDS FSU, is released in 2002, and this video is the most iconic video Red Dragons has ever let out. This video featured Caine Gayle, Colin McKay, Glenn Suggit, Jake Stewart, Jason Ellis, Mike Hastie, Moses Itkonen, Paul Machnau, Rob Sluggo Boyce, Russ Milligan, Ryan Smith.
Three years later, Skateboard Party was released in 2005, and featured skateboarders such as Aaron Johnson, Bucky Lasek, Caine Gayle, Colin McKay, Danny Way, Gailea Momolu, Glenn Suggit, Jason Ellis, Mike Chalmers, Mike Hastie, Moses Itkonen, Paul Machnau, Paul Trep, Rob Dyrdek, Rob Sluggo Boyce, Russ Milligan, Ryan Oughton, Ryan Smith, Sean Hayes, Sheldon Meleshinski, and even Tony Hawk.
Jason Ellis has been considered a committed member of the RDS family since the early 90’s, and had a part in skateboard party. Ellis then moved on to his radio show the Jason Ellis show, joining Tony Hawk, Bam Margera and others on the Faction satellite radio channel. Ellis’s show has gone on to be among the highest rated on Sirius XM, and has often made mention to the RDS brand and team.
Steve Caballero was a teammate with Colin Mckay in the 80’s, who introduced them to his “gang” at the time, the Red Dragons. Now, in 2020, Steve has since collaborated with RDS on a unique lineup combining Steve’s artwork with the classic RDS logo.
The modern RDS team features members such as Alex Morin, Cody McEntire, Micky Papa, Ryan Decenzo, Scott Decenzo, and TJ Rogers. Many of the original team members are still heavily affiliated with the brand, and Sluggo even went to mention, “once you became a part of RDS, it’s for life”
