In this episode at the modern image 00 gauge layout New Junction, We have a go at converting the Virgin liveried HST into an LNER liveried model using some cheaply available transfers from Railtec Transfers.
With a cost price of around £3.50 its an extremely affordable way to have up to date modern branded stock on your layout, and quite fun to do!

Really enjoyed this video Richard, great to hear that such an accomplished modeller like yourself is still apprehensive about doing certain jobs on their layouts. It really does give us novices hope and also teaches us not to be scared of doing something new as one of the heavyweights in modelling also has his fears in certain areas. 😀👍🏻

Thanks for the video richard, I was a little concerned how much the trasnfers looked different to the rest of the livery, but with the photo of the prototype then I was sold, excellent tutorial thank you. New stock, I think a class 90 in freightliner, based on the size of the box.

You did a great job and cleary showed the pros and cons. Even if colors don't quite match in video, they are closer in reality, as you said. One can decide whether the £10 decals or the £260 new power cars suit them better. I have a couple trains I would like to change emblems on myself. Fortunately for me, the area is small, so I will paint out the old and use clear-backed decals. Thanks for the demo! 👍

Just came off looking at eBay, and there were 6 class 43 for sale costing from £28 per end there was a HST set including 2 coaches bids at £30, your a clever chap you should have bought a couple of old dogs and given them a refurbishment, thus creating another great video and gaining more fans like me who think that HORNBY are taking the piss, as though know that there's a collectors market where old blokes like me spend their pension on Locos that will be bought n stored never to see the light of day! Really enjoyed you video with "The Kid Dick" and Everard Junction, I watched Richards first video post of his Locos running over a set of points which I believe was around May 2010, I then watched every video to date and boy has he come along way! Glebe Rd Jnctn was another layout I watched, Terry Sharrocks wonderful lay out which started life in a shed, ending up in his loft and only weeks away from being photographed for BRM his world turned upside down, at least we have the videos for referencing, which I intend to do when I get around to building my own layout, but here's the dilemma do I build a model layout for the pleasure of running or do I build a layout for filming front of decisions, decisions

Great work Richard. As for the guess of the new engine. I will press my luck and vouch for the Hornby TTS Class 60 in DB Schenker livery as I just recently got one and I am aiming to review it in August once I get a DCC controller as it is not enabled on DCC for some silly reason :). But you should be fine though as you use DCC on the layout if I remember correctly mate? All the best Ash.
@glenshielrailway5696
@glenshielrailway5696 5 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend lining the transfer up with the stripe at the bottom. It'd be much easier to match the curve and then run a scalpel along the seem below the vents. You'd be able to use the seem as a guide for the knife and avoid scratching off any paint work. I was a bit thrown back by the colour difference between the transfer and the body until I Googled it -then you put up a picture- . Gotta love the 'sod it, that'll do' method they used on the prototype 🤣👌 £260 for a pair of units that aren't even DCC fitted is just ridiculous. They're going to end up pricing themselves out of the hobby at this rate. I'm glad now I went on a spending spree a few years back and got all the stock I need then!

Hi as a scale modeller for many years decals are common place. Try using micro Sol and micro set. Two solutions that you add when you apply your decal. They will make your decals so thin they will painted on. Other solutions are available.

I found using a couple of soft bristle paint brushes work really well. You can use them to manipulate the transfer and remove water away and if you needed to add water back to the brush and push it back under the transfer to realign them. I keep a set of different sizes just to do transfers.

I am very happy that you have covered over that name of a person who is not on my Xmas card list, here comes the BUT, I can only hope that one day the new LNER company can afford to change all of the livery as it still looks like that man's train. Of course, it has to be repaint in Green as that is LNER's colour. My favourite diesel is the Deltic. I can not afford a Hornby or a Bachmann version. So I have rebuilt a Lima one, including the motor swap and flush glazing and repainted the buffer beams (One of which I had to repair.) in BR Crimson, (Blood) I thought I had picked out the red pot. I will be posting a picture of it on my facebook page, Yorkdale LNER Preservation Railway. Martin (Thailand) Happy transferring.

Indeed we do have that locomotive that is our favourite. Decals like many other things, become a lot easier with practice and knowledge. Two products I always use when using decals is microset and microsol. Microset helps making the decal set better and microsol softens the decal to adhere to irregular surfaces. Regardless tho I recon you did well and the end result does look good while saving yourself a few pounds. I’ve got a large wagon project coming up where I’ll be doing a lot of decal work. But I keep putting it off due to the repetitive work involved. All the best, Clint at Leila Central.

nice idea, however the rake at the start had the buffet in the wrong place, I thought it was 1st class car 1st class car-buffet- standard class car - standard class car - standard class car - standard class car - standard class car

Will be honest as many seem to shy away from it lol If the real HST's look cheap and nasty with their new decals then these are good. It looks much better as a virgin power car and i should imagine there are a fair few left in that livery anyway so i would personally take those off.

It'll never match the quality of a factory product but £3.50 vs £260. It's all a bit of fun

Hmm! So it's a long box, but not long enough for a unit except bubble cars, but I doubt it's one of them. It's more modern than a Stirling single, so it's not a steam locomotive, or anything for the heritage line. I guess.......a class 66 in a popular/celebrity livery!!!!!!
