After installing the new Eaton 5PX 1500RT UPS in the home / office server closet, I finally got around to redoing all of the network cables and power cables in the closet. The home server closet is now cable managed and just looks a hell of lot better. We went from having 4 UPSs to only 2 thanks to the newest addition.

When cutting blind, expecting cables behind, DON'T cut deep, cut shallow. Better yet get an oscillating multitool for the cutouts. A desktop grommet works great for drywall holes, instock in any home store.

The AT&T jack is call a Fiber Jack. This jack simply converts outside fiber to Inside Fiber. If you didn’t have this in your house then you would be breaking fiber anytime you plugged or unplugged your AT&T gateway.

If you're talking about having the pigtail fished through the wall into the box, thats technically "legal" as its not a permanent install. Having permanently installed power and network cabling in the same box is not. Either way, I don't want power that close to my network cables. 18" minimum separation for parallel runs, not in same wall cavity. The outlet in there - I get why it was put there, cable amplifier power etc - but I wouldn't want to run the whole rack on that. Lots of current, lots of induction.

In my country we never put cables directly in the wall.. all cables are in flexible pipes, which makes it easier to re-wire if needed.
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 3 жыл бұрын
That’s pretty cool. Which country are you from?
@ronved
@ronved 3 жыл бұрын
I live in Norway. For hidden electrical installations, its pretty much illegal to put the cables directly in the walls in case of fire. The wallboxes we use, have circular holes in them, where the pipe locks itself into place, so its pretty cool. When i ran my network installations, i used same kind of pipes. Typical dimensions are like 16 or 20mm. Btw i think you can terminate the fiber that comes from the outside of your house, directly to your UDM Pro with a SFP transiever. I just called my ISP and said i would like to use my own router instead of their modem.

Yea it's a no can do in Texas, must be romex wire stapled to the center of the stud. When someone wants the connections moved I cut out large sections of drywall to run it correctly and won't do it any other way. But I am an expert in drywall so it's easy for me. I never see anyone hit the fireblock so curious if that's a building code in other areas.

Can you please give me an insight about that fiber optic device in your closet? I'm looking for a simple fiber patch connection just like any ethernet patch connection which runs inside the house. The setup which I can think about is like one point of the fiber patch cable terminates at the property boundary where the ISP can plug their fiber cable from the main ISP Junction box and the second end of the fiber patch cable comes into my network closet and terminates there, from here another fiber patch cable goes into my ISP's ONT/Gateway box. Then I can connect TP LINK Omada compatible router to this gateway and then have complete control over my network on the Omada ecosystem. Can you also share some Amazon links for that device as well. Thanks

Bit of a noob question. Why are there two separate fiber links between the 16 port and the 10G switch? Does that increase throughput?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 2 жыл бұрын
One of my switches is 1G only. For fun I aggregated two of the 1G ports together so they will be 2G instead. But it’s kind of pointless because the devices in the other end are 1G. At one point long ago I was just playing around with different configs

I wonder if seeing all this home networking equipment kinda scares people away from owning any home like this. In my house, I have Dell servers, Eaton UPS, Cisco Networking Equipment like ASA firewalls, 48 port switches, and Routers. They think they might need a Network Engineer to run the house. LOL ..wait until they find out that I only run Linux on my servers.
