Most of the ideas I have come from things and scenes I saw somewhere - for example the idea for "Yuragi" came from a house that I saw during exploration of the Enoden train line. There was a strange house you had to go on to the tracks to get to. I remembered it and made a story around it!

I was soooooo looking forward to your part 2 on this topic and it exceeded my expectations. As some already pointed out, thank you for making the lineart available! I have some blocks of "Drawing Block" paper and wondered if that would be any good for watercolor as it appeared too thin. Maybe it had some "magical" properties, Lol! It appears not to be the case - so Myiazaki / Ghibli must use a different paper to watercolor, like you mentioned, perhaps quarter sheets of real watercolor paper and these blocks are only used for sketches? Thanks again for the video - beautiful sketch!
@mattjabbar

In the documentaries he takes a big sheet and rips it into halves. I think it could be the same paper the backgrounds artists use: NEW TMK POSTER ニューTMKポスター紙 特厚口

Really nice work with the whole illustration! And a question. For a while I knew that Hayao Miyazaki makes comics and I saw the paper he used works well with pen and watercolor but I think the paper isn’t from the sketchbook he uses (the one used in this video), based on the fact that the paper he uses for comics do not have holes on the edge. So does anyone know what paper he uses for his comics?

Thank you for sharing! I've been waiting for a follow up from the first video. It was really kind of you to put up the line art for everyone to use, thank you. With the palette being green/blue heavy, do you think this is reflected in the general art style of Studio Ghibli films? Also, would you add any colours to this set up right now, or is it fine as it is? Is there any difference between the old palette colours and the new palette colours (as you mentioned in the first video)? Good luck :) .
@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 7 жыл бұрын
I still don't have the old colors that got discontinued so I don't know the difference. I would add some (one or two) reds to the palette and I will probably do it. I think the palette had a lot of influence on the Ghibli movies look, especially on the storyboarding and concept art stage done by Miyazaki himself.

I think the method called "divide and rule" would be good to mention. Just dissecting the scene or building you want to draw to the simplest possible shapes and starting with this. Adding details comes last. :)

Hey Mateusz, First of all I would like to say that you are so amazing! Each video I'm in such shock of your amazing talent and skill. I would like to ask, I'm only recently getting into watercolors and while I'm used to picking a color in Photoshop, then sliding the dial changing hue and brightness for the shading, I'm confused how to do that with watercolors. Because if you have a palette like this, you don't have all the colors available. Should I be mixing colors for the shadow-colors?

I used Holbein for the first one and I think for the few next ones also. I bought a 24 Shimincke set about halfway through the series. I also had few W&N colors supplementing everything so it’s a little bit complicated ;)
