Күн бұрын

As Director of the Benaroya Institute at Virginia Mason and the Immune Tolerance Network, Immunologist and Biomedical Researcher Gerald Nepom, MD, PhD, has dedicated himself to understanding the moment when the body turns against itself, causing diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis, and how by decoding our genes we can better relate to our immune system.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Glad I stumbled upon this TED talk. I just recently developed a general auto-immune disease that is attacking my joints and connective tissues. Resulting in not being able to work. I can barely get out of a chair or off the toilet and in some cases, if a chair is too low I simply can't get up without assistance. My hands are like claws and I'm unable to open them or grip anything. Pain and swelling in my feet makes it impossible to be on my feet for long. I am finally getting treatment and starting to improve on a long list of drugs but the side effects and long term damage from these drugs are horrible and I hope someday we can move past this current method of treatment. I have since signed up for a clinical trial. I hope I can be involved in changing the outlook for others like myself. Donations can also be given. I highly suggest anybody who knows somebody with an auto immune disease to make a donation to help possibly make a positive change in treatment options.

If you have MS, re-educate your immune system with diet as well. Look into Dr. Jelinek (overcoming MS) and Dr. Wahls (another TED talk). I was diagnosed in 1992 and am doing much better than the doctors predicted over the years. But I have to admit, I really miss cheese.

Autoimmune disease starts in the mind, the #1 cause is Stress as it imbalence your hormone levels and create disease, ever wonder why xortisone which is a sress hormone is the #1 drug used to treat such diseases, also autoimmune flares are often preceded by stressful situations, something went wrong with your stress hormones which caused disease, we should teach children in school of the negative effects and biology of stress
@SunnyPeacefulKingdom
@SunnyPeacefulKingdom 3 жыл бұрын
No Sir.... It's so much complex, genetics is often a main cause that cannot be solved only by a "zen" attitude ! Buf of course stress aggravates every disease. Be grateful if you're lucky to have a good genetics and please do not post simplist comments because quality comments are unfortunately SO rare...
@okmmom
@okmmom 3 жыл бұрын
@@SunnyPeacefulKingdom no sir, genetics can predispose you but stress is the trigger, If genetics was solely the cause than why do you often have someone with a certain disease that no one else in his family has it? Some disease are purely genetic like hereditary disease at birth or something like muscle dystrophy.But most disease are not genetics only stress plays a big role, but also lifestyle. Also why are women more susceptible to autoimmune disease if it was purely genetic? Why are many autoimmune disease are on the rise, which some of them more than ten fold in the past30 years? Did the genetic code change that fast? We are not victims of our genes. Also some genes makes you more susceptible to develop a certain fisease but not all people who have the gene get the disease, how do you explain this? There must be something else. You should read about epigenetics
@okmmom
@okmmom 2 жыл бұрын
@just Abhi no easy answer, but first remove the cause which is stress, not easy when you already have a disease and get stuck in the vicious circle but always try not to identify yourself with negative ideas , dont fear the future bc it is not here now or regret, feel guilty about the past, you cant changed it and it is not here now

People need to understand that if you look at people living a simple life away from the modern world, they dont have these diseases. Then ask yourself why, live like these people is your answer!
@Jeca299

Are you saying this from personal experience? Trust me, they still get cancer even if they're living free of technology.
@chrisb594
@chrisb594 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jeca299 No I'm a researcher and I'm talking about autoimmune diseases including asthma and eczema. They dont exist in tribes and cultures living away from the modern world. It's not technology, its food. It's the mucosal layer in the gut being damaged by the food and drink we consume and then larger particles of food getting into the bloodstream. Anything which isn't natural can damage the mucosal wall and very little is needed. Think of anything that is man made such as additives, emulsifiers, colours, trans-fats, preservatives, to much gluten, sugar, alcohol and the lists go on. So once these large particles of food pass into the bloodstream, the bodies white blood cells start to attack as they represent a foreign object. The different types of autoimmune diseases are related to what part of the body and what food substance has cause the inflammatory response. For example, dairy is related to eczema and gluten is related to fibromyalgia. If you live like a natural human being for more than 2 months, your body has the capacity to cure most diseases/ailments which you have created.

Nutrition from early on and detoxification from a biotherapeutic aspect can retrain and allow the body to heal and right itself. Drugs can only temporary at best deal with symptoms of the body, but never eradicate the core issue. Drugs become ineffective leading to other drugs that ultimately create more problems in the body and oftentimes worsening the original problem or creating a bigger problem than the original dis-ease(simply a body out of balance.)

This is what helped me with me severe eczema and seasonal allergies. I stopped eating bread and other gluten food. Eliminated sugar from my diet. I did 3 day water fast which promises to "reset" your immune system. I drink apple cider vinegar + turmeric powder mixed in water every day before breakfast. No more eczema or allergies. 3 day fast I recommend to do once or twice a year.

You must be related to me~!!! it's Genetic. My great Grandmother was told it was all in her head. And I found help from doing what Maxim Rowan below states. Food is Key, as well as Methylated B vitamins. Research MTHRF. If you have $$, find a Functional Medicine Doctor, they can help a lot, but usually don't take insurance. Change what you eat. No Processed Foods, only whole real foods

I have had AS for 20 years but found out about the Keto diet almost 3 years ago and are now off ALL my medication and are 90% pain free. I was on 1000mg Naprosyn, 4 to 10 Codalgen and 1 to 3 30mg codiene a day - and still in pain despite all those drugs. With Keto I also lost 15kg without having to do any exercise. My cholesterol levels are ratio are perfect and my artery health & blood pressure is the same. Try it and be strict on it to ensure you actually get into ketosis and stay there. I now come off Keto for about a month or the pain starts to return. I do this about every six to eight months. Living with chronic pain is not something I would wish on anyone, I wish you all the best in your journey.

No the immune system is not perfect! immunologists are discovering everyday new rogue or overactive antibodies! I am a vegetarian, never smoked and didn't drink! always lived a healthy life style and everyone who knew me was shocked when i got ill with several rare autoimmune conditions! Mine are so rare that the Drs learn as they go along and ive met others in the same position! There are factors which they say that contribute to diseases but when I discuss it with people with there are no common factors! If the immunity was perfect people wouldn't get ill in the first place, would they?

Lol Definitely not true. Tell that to the millions of children around the world with auto immune diseases. There's no cure and doctors don't even know why and how they got these horrible diseases. They generally say the same thing like...environmental factors, genes, trauma, etc. Some say certain foods like red meat or milk or sugar caused it etc. The fact is, nobody knows. I just know doctors and pharmaceutical companies make billions treating patients and the symptoms but there is no cure. Honestly why would pharmaceutical companies look for a cure when they can have lifetime customers treating the symptoms? 🤷‍♂️
