I've made a large assortment of images this year that I didn't like very much, however making those images has lead to me being back to making things I do like.
This video is a journey through the process of finding my way back to liking my film photography work again and some philosophical musings about things I've learnt and experienced.

I came to learn this while we were out and about with him haha! I was on the beach while they were in the water and people kept coming up and saying "that's Mikey out there!" when they were waaay to far away to see any discernable facial features, and that's when I learnt about him having a distinctive style haha! I know very little about surfing since the cold water here put me off after a brief period of trying it when I was young, but Mikey is a lovely person and it was good fun to learn some stuff from that trip! Cheers Tyler!

Your images a simply beautiful. I find myself on a hard moment of my career also, after working comercially with digital for 10 straight years i'm stopping everything and focusing on film only for my personal work. Honestly i felt a little burnout, bored and didnt find any of my images pleasing anymore. The challenge and fun of film photography seems to be what i was missing. Thanks for your video!

welcome back will, i 'll have to watch the video again in a more quiet place but, as always, like the photos lot and appreciate your narration, even when I'd wish for things having been easier for you throughout the past year. It may be very parasocial, but I've been meaning to share the following for a while: I am very grateful to get another glimpse into your endeavours. I've been dealing with recurring bouts of depression over the last few years, and in those stretches of long and bleak days, your uploads are a short window of relief, which felt (and still feels) very valuable each time. also, I think I can empathize with things just feeling askew or "not quite right", no matter how sure you are of "doing things right", it's very unsettling and painful each time, so your dedication to your craft, you keeping up with the channel even through facing illness and the commitment to getting back in the groove of things is very inspiring to me. thank you for sharing your videos and best wishes to you and those around you, I hope you do well.
@willysheepskin

Thank you kindly Lonker! I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with that. I've had some really down times over the years myself as well, when I lived in London was probably the worst but the thing thats kept me going even through periods where I couldn't bring myself to leave the house for weeks at a time has been recognising that there will be an end to it. That and trying to do small things wherever possible which eventually lead to being able to do bigger things. And failing at managing to do the small things repeatedly is also part of the process, even though for me it always turns into a moment of "if I can't even do this why bother" keeping at it eventually leads to things moving on I've found. Also know that you aren't alone, feel free to reach out if you ever need to chat, I do my best to respond to everything haha! It's a great honor that the things I put out can help. Best wishes to you and those around you too, I very much hope you do well also!

Not sure if you know the work of Joachim Brohm, but you might like his work. Your colour work always excites me. I’m sure part of it is the foreign nature of the landscape, but the excitement mainly comes from your perspective and variety. There is a cohesive atmosphere to your work, but plenty of surprises and some of the most interesting and unique colours. The picture of the newspaper in the window is an absolute favourite. Lovely video and it is wonderful to see that you are starting to feel at home with your work again; all the best!

Wow what a throwback, I think I might've stumbled upon or learnt about his work somehow at university but haven't thought about it in ages. Thanks for mentioning that man such a delight to rediscover work one enjoys! Thank you so much for that wonderful description of my work too! I always struggle to put what I'm going for into words but you've pretty much nailed it there and if that's your perception then something is going right somewhere haha! I think that newspaper one is probably my favorite outside of the fashion stuff too, sometimes even when thing's dont seem to be lining up there are moments where images can make sense I guess haha! All the best to you too, and thank you again for the kind words! Cheers Matthew!

Hey Will, super happy you made this video! It's really inspiring! Always love seeing the Mamiya RB67 being spotted in so many interesting places! To share, I feel personally I've been working backwards with my work recently. I was fortunate to have opportunities this year to be able to do lots of fashion creatives + editorial work. However, I found I hit a wall where I wasn't learning anymore and felt things were becoming unwieldily. I got burnt out after a few months. I was happy with the images I was making but I wasn't happy with the journey itself. However, I learned so much from the teams I worked with on my shoots, it made me really value their roles so much. I feel it's what molded them into great people in the industry + great image makers themselves. So yeah, I guess I'm more eager to learn there, network and refine my skills with assisting. I now hope this humbling gets me to a place where you are - where everything lines up when taking a photo, in front & behind the camera. I think regardless, consistency as a image maker is key. You learn what you need to grow as a photographer eventually.
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 7 ай бұрын
Thanks Brent! I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with things not lining up, but it sounds like you have the exact right outlook to work your way through it! Being able to work on set in any capacity really is a great honor and a privilege, I'm sure I'll still be saying yes to many jobs as an assistant yet, I just feel like now is the time to start trying to pivot into my own work a bit as well cus if not now then when haha! I also wouldn't necessarily look as assisting being a humbling thing, if you're working with the right photographer it's a lot more like you're peers working towards the same goal in different capacities than actually working under someone! There is of course still a humbling aspect to it since if you're working with someone consistently the clients and teams will change and you might get the proper "assistant" treatment there, but I think it's important for long term collaborations for there to be mutual respect between you and who you're working with otherwise it might end up leading to burnout again. I look forward to hearing how things progress for you though and wish you much success!

Everything doesn't always align and you will experience ups and downs, but the journey is so integral to achieving success. I love that you decided to share the whole journey and not just the last 15 mins because IMO it makes it so much more relatable and meaningful. Great to see you back out there. It can be hard to get out there when your health isn't helping. I went through a heart episode in June but all is better now. Still a little breathless at times but nothing dangerous, or so the doctor tells me. My back and hip are acting up again but not too bad. The wife is getting a knee replacement in a week so that will be fun. My film photography has been a little slow but I have been doing more digital stuff. I have picked up an Olympus E500 with the Kodak made CCD sensor and there is indeed has a very filmic look to the output. I finally have too many cameras and I have found that it slows you down. So now I limit myself to just two cameras and two lenses on any trip I make. Too many choices is a bad thing, at least for me. I have been shooting more B/W film and have started developing the negatives myself. I don't have a darkroom so prints aren't a thing right now but I do plan to make some more 6X9 images with my GW690 and then contact print the images for a sort of zine kind of thing. Should be fun. Winter for me here but Summer for you so take care and have fun. It is good to see you again.

Thanks Bob! I'm glad to hear that all is better, but sorry to hear that it's still impacting you! I actually had a back episode myself this year and very much hope that your ailments get sorted out. I never really appreciated just how miserable going about day to day activities can be with a sore back haha! All the best for your wife's knee replacement too! I hope her surgery and recovery are quick and painless! I actually have never looked into that Olympus, but having a Kodak made CCD sensor in it sounds pretty promising in terms of the colors it'll be able to achieve! I concur on the too many choices being a bad thing front, although I still don't think I'm ready to sell anything else just yet haha. Your zine idea sounds lovely! Developing your own b/w stuff is also super rewarding I find, being able to control the contrast and grain in the negative itself is really useful when it comes to achieving a look too. You should definitely try get a darkroom going though, it's the final piece of the black and white puzzle haha! Thanks so much for stopping by as always, lovely to hear from you again and good luck again to your wife for the surgery! And best of health to you too!

ok, 1st the good part so my comment here will hopefully be of a 'constructive criticism' nature: 🙂 + you have done an almost extensive review of things you wanted to talk about ... well done ... + you have also shown some fine examples of your work just as well ... kudos to that ... i enjoyed some of your photographs indeed and your videography is also top notch imo, although i preferred to see more still shots than moving images in a relatively long 40+ minutes video! now with the points i personally consider as 'negative' ones in any video of this kind online: - too much 'showing off' yourself talking while facing the camera with extensive mostly 'personal view' talks, turning an otherwise short yet more useful video into an overly long and boring one! let's not forget all of us: since the Internet started more than three decades ago, people have also gotten more impatient about everything, thus not willing to spend time on long conversations or discussions online unless it's an entertaining movie or show and things like that ... (they'd even occasionally pay good money for that and go to the theaters for example ...) 😉 * remedy: do show your face, even if for long minutes, but give it some variety as well so people would be more interested in following up instead of using the fast-forward feature of KZfaq's video player, thus not listening to what you're saying! (personally though, i prefer 'educational' videos with less of the presenter's face and more text over images perhaps ... or his/her voice heard over images + text of stuff ... after all, photography and video is first and foremost about 'seeing' rather than hearing or even reading: "A picture is worth a thousand words!" or so the old saying goes ...) 🥶 and in cases like this, such texts could also give extra useful information about the camera/lens/film/ISO/exposure info (shutter speed/aperture/etc)/post-processing software/... and so on ... (and they don't have to take a long time thus lengthening the video's final 'footage' ... they can appear briefly but the viewer can always pause the video and read them for as long as they like ... or they can appear in the video's description for example, with a link to another site where detailed info about the photos and stuff has been posted ...) - this bit of my overly long comment is going to be a criticism as well as a friendly advice ... (coming from an old photographer who started his photography venture at a mere age of 8 in the mid-1960s btw ...) : understanding from your input, you don't do the darkroom part of your film photography ... nothing wrong with that ... many if not most photogs, even old pros, don't do that either ... but that's comparable to people who don't do the post-processing of their digital images (using Photoshop or any software) themselves ... which, in the latter case, it's exactly the opposite because now, most digital photographers, pro and amateur alike, do that part themselves! 🙂 yes, i can see that you get only the developing part of your film photography done by commercial labs and then you do the (scanning and) post processing of the images yourself ... great! but there is a slight yet VERY IMPORTANT problem there: 'commercial' photo labs usually use 'replenished' chemicals to save money on material, which is ok for snapshots and family travel photos etc ... but that kind of film processing affects final negative (or slide's) image quality AT LEAST 50 per % ... that's a NO-NO to me at least ... and to quite a number of experienced film photography buffs, old AND young, pro or enthusiast ... (in fact, starting in the early 1990s, i stopped doing film photography long before digital photography became affordable and mainstream a decade or so later, simply because i lost my access to a permanent darkroom so i could do the 'wet-processing' part of the business myself too ... and to be fair, probably the only major drawback to film photography is its high 'costs' ... long story ...) . . . long story short, you're doing a really nice thing and it shows you ARE truly in love with what you're doing! and that's one of the things i highly admire and respect in people when i see it ... keep up the good job young fellow! that's what i still do myself too, if time (and expenses of film photography) allow that is ... many others also do it ... and it's also good to see the younger born-into-digital-revolution generations are getting so interested about retro stuff such as film photography, thus reviving it from an untimely and unjust death! pitty people like me won't live long enough to enjoy shooting film (and digital of course!) way into the future ... (maybe in another lifetime ... 🤔) but at least i can say goodbye to life in relative peace of mind when on my deathbed ... 👻

Dude .. the man has an entire video on darkroom printing from his home lab and is a consulting technician for the best commercial film printing lab in South Africa.. Seriously - perhaps aim to understand a channel and the intended audience before critiquing a single video. The impulse to say "OK Boomer" here is so overwhelming .. I just did it..

William, love your videos, especially this one. Wanted to ask: do you have any advice/perspective in terms of pitching editorials/fashion as well as finding assistance opportunities? I'm feeling a little stuck in my career currently where I'm confident in my abilities but feel like im sitting around hoping to get contacted instead of making some sort of conscious effort to reach out/pitch things.

Ahoy! I've spent extended periods in the same position with regards to waiting for people to contact me. A few years ago that tended to happen quite frequently but these days it feels like one has to put forward a really solid brief and give potential clients a very accurate idea of what it is you want to do for them before they'll even consider you for a job. I think it's probably because there are loads of folks vying for the opportunity. I'm not the best with reaching out myself, I'm not sure why since when I do it mostly ends up working out but the reaching out in the first place aspect is the hardest part for me haha. I guess the way to think of it would be that if you're sitting around not reaching out but someone else is out there doing the leg work then there's a 0% chance you're going to get approached since people already have the option of easily going with someone that has approached them. I need to try keep that in mind as well these days haha. With regards to assisting opportunities, depending on where you are there might be an assisting agency which is a great place to go for consistent work, they'll take a cut of your rate but it's worth it for a lot of people and you'll get to work with a large variety of people. The route I took was more befriending people who's work I admired and then when the opportunity arose after years of friendship going down the road of becoming their assist. It's very important that you know what you're doing on set though as even though it's largely a thankless job, what you're likely to end up doing on set is going to be crucial for the success of the shoot. A lot of the assistance agencies will also offer courses in things you need to know to function properly on set so that would be worth looking into if you aren't 100% about what to expect. Hope that helped, main thing is just to back yourself and reach out!
