From the sounds of it he slowly got better as a being. Going from murdering everyone to only pretending to poison (though still a couple of murders) to only killing because of mutiny.

Fantastic story. Your narration seems to capture the breaking of this, rebel with a dream. You can almost picture the face of angry frustrated loathing as his spirit snaps. Even when he finds actual treasure in vintage collectibles of a more inappropriate nature, he can't find joy plundering the booty. Pun intended. It's a story of a human dreaming of being a space pirate like from treasure planet, only to slowly have that dream become a nightmare of disappointments. He just wants money that jingles and cool unknowable gadgets from species he can't pronounce. A simple man with simple ideals. It's perfect.
