This year, I pruned with goal to make this grow taller since the weeping branches are longer and extends beyond the bottom of the pot.
Additional work this year is the root prune. I am finding most of my container plants loose their vigor when root bound.
Hence changing the pot to a larger size. Fortunate to have purchased a set rather than one!

I just saw a Weeping Pussy Willow today during my first garden center foray of Spring in KY. Oh I am so in love with it, what a beauty. It would definitely need to be in a container - I wouldn't trust a lovely tree like that to be anywhere near the lawn guys 🙄 I have a false Weeping Cyprus in a container and today I noticed the buds starting - hooray . I'm glad to see that your tree does well in a container.

It is doing well but very few blooms this spring. But the ones in local garden centres are not any better. Hope next year is better

So this is a yearly thing! I kept thinking as I watched you do this, why does this plant go root crazy? Then it dawned on me, if she was in the ground she’d get super tall right? Then she’d need that root system to keep her in place and and feed herself. You’re right, she’s worth it and the trees look amazing in pots!❤

This is a dwarf. But I heard all Willow has an extensive root system. I have been warned not to plant it in ground since the roots will damage the underground pipes.

I have 2 willows like this I got from a grocery store, it comes with a fabric-like plug at the root of the tree. Do you remove it ??? I have one for indoor keeping and I purhcased another one to put in the ground.

I did not see that till much later. I left it alone since it does not seem to be in the way. Had I noticed it earlier, I likely would try to remove as long as the removal does not hurt any roots.💪🏻💪🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Interesting to watch. I was a bit surprised when I saw the volume of roots. Healthy plant. Would you do the same if you were going to put her in the ground? Thank you for showing that❤

I would just loosen up the roots if planting in ground. I am hesitant in putting many plants in ground since it may be impossible to move. I planted a grass many years ago. It took me the whole morning just to cut it to ground. I could not plant anything after so I covered the spot in gravel and put containers on display. Wonder if the roots underground have broken down or not. The grow bag idea sound like a good in between - still thinking about......

@@GardenNotes I’ve been a little chicken to be aggressive with roots like hers. Now I know it’s ok. That is a good point about some things being nearly impossible to move like that grass. And I have planted the same trees several times because of my stupidity…the grow bags allow cheating room. Also I can plant an area with several juvenile Japanese maples closer than normal while they get bigger or to test them in an area. The other day I moved a Green Cascade in a 2 gallon because it was too much sun. I just put a standard size ginkgo in a 2 gallon bag in a place I’d love for it to be permanent (it’s almost 5’ now)but I know eventually that tree will be way to huge for that spot. When it gets about 10 plus feet I’ll just pull it up and plant it in a forever home. You may like them.

@@cindyl3916 so the roots did not poke through the bag? Ginkgo are very nice. When I was in Japan, there are roads that are lined with these. So nice in Fall when they turn a golden color. We have a dwarf version that was killed by the extreme cold 2 winters ago. Last year we bought a new one and it survive the last winter in a container.

@@cindyl3916 I need to get my head wrapped around the grow bag. Btw, I may be visiting the Fraser Valley Rose Farm next week, time/weather permitting. Also watch an episode by Mr. Maple on keeping Japanese Maple in containers. Very informative!

@@GardenNotes Well, if I leave now I can meet you at Jason’s in Fraser Valley by the time you’re visiting 😉lol! I wish! Maybe a tour video would be lovely 🤔💚How about you buy some 2 gallon grow bags and have fun with them. I put your creeping Jenny, Japanese fern, and hosta’s in some black one gallons and hung them kind of like you have your Jenny. I have a huge Shumard oak I planted 20+ yrs ago they’re hanging around. It’s hard to explain but it looks killer. When it starts getting real hot I’ll put them in their forever ground home. I haven’t used the black ones in ground but I do love those Coolaroo because they’re mesh-like and very well made and cute!

May I ask, where did you get that beautiful blue planter with the tree design on it? I'd love to know the company who made it, or possibly where I may find one like it. Thank-You SO Much for all the valuable information on this Adorable little tree! :)

I bought the planters at a garden centre in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada called Prickly Pear. I have not seen them in any other garden centre nor home improvement centre. They do not carry a manufacture name or any label. You can contact the store for more information. 1-694-241-4717 is the only contact info on their website. I have published many videos on this plant since I could not find any myself when I needed them a few years back. Glad they are of help!

I bought a small one and repotted it after the blooms feel off, early spring, I trimmed the branches, and now it has grown leaves, should I leave it in the same pot for another year or plant it in the ground, I am in zone 9n las vegas NV

Great question! Either would be great. Your call. There are 2 planted in ground in my neighborhood. Mine has been in a pot since purchase a few years ago. Pro of being in a container: Much nicer to look at, a statement in itself If elevated, there is a lot of room for the downward branches to grow. Need more attention in terms of watering. It likes to have consistent moisture. Less work if in ground. Root pruning needed. None if planted in landscape.
