Oh my gosh! Syd Field was my first screenplay book! Everything I learned about screenplays came from that book, and I still reference it when I get stuck. Absolutely love this book ☺️

Seeing that layout for the structure also makes it make sense that so many novel series turn into trilogies!! I love that this can be used in so many different aspects!

Right?! And that’s actually a funny observation that I never thought about as all my Series are trilogies 😂🤣😂

I love your video. Makes me think of the heros journey. Most of the old classic movies; wizard of oz, star wars, nemo and many others, have been written around the hero's journey concept

Syd Field's was my first screenplay book too. I've never stopped thinking about the act structure, plot points, mid-point, etc. I like Save the Cat - I have both screenplay and novel, but I haven't used it to the full extent. I also like Plot Whisperer book of Writing Prompts and the How to Write a Screenplay in 21 days will sometimes get me going even if I don't use it exactly as laid out in the book.

Ooh I might have to get my library to get that in if they don't have it already cos it sounds like a good read! I like the sequence breakdown, that's something I already do in a sense so it would be really cool to see how he talks about it, definitely sounds like a great way to break down the story! One of my favourite structure techniques that I've found is Mary Robinette Kowal talking about the M.I.C.E quotient and how she uses it for structuring stories, there's some great episodes of writing excuses, and I think probably a few videos on KZfaq explaining it, but there was a thing she said about using the elements like html code, so if you open a brackets of the various elements, you close them in reverse order. For some reason that really worked in my brain and helped me work out why I couldn't figure out how the book should end 😆 realised I'd opened with a character first then event and was trying to find an even ending when it needed a character one for the final close off. Also 100% relate on the need to work out the ending or I am totally lost in the draft till I work it out 😆 took me months to get it figured out! Now I try to come up with a solid one before starting if I can, saves so much time 😄

Definitely going to check her out!! It sounds like she uses outside of the box methods which I love as well!! I love it when something someone says just clicks! It’s such a rush!!And yessss!! Knowing the ending is vital to me now! It literally makes everything come together in my head!

Oooooh, THANKS for the review, Becca! The only "structure" kind of book I've read is "Save The Cat! Writes a Novel." It was really helpful and apparently adapted to novel writing from a book about screenplays. When I was looking at your book, I was thinking about how incapable I am of reading and NOT underlining and writing notes. It's kind of an interactive journal of sorts because I date each reading and then use a different pen each time. Liz Gilbert's BIG MAGIC is a rainbow of colours! 🙂

Hahaha!! I’ll post-it note a book but I find it so hard to write in it 🤣😂 But for craft books, I’d make an exception lol!! Especially love the idea of making it so colorful hahaha!!And I’ve heard Save the Cat Writes a Novel is really good!! I should check it out. I really didn’t like the screenplay version but that was written by a totally different author!

@@BeccaCSmith I was thinking I should read the screenplay version of "Save The Cat" but I won't bother if you didn't like it. I did already order the Syd Field book, so I'm looking forward to scrawling all over it. ;-) I'll have to do a video on how I take notes, etc. in books because it's a whole system. I'll add it to The LIST!

4:00 that's how I structure stories too... at least early stages, before I break it into 8 sequences! This was the first book on craft I read, too! I was 13 and bought the first edition that came out in my country with birthday money my Grandma had given me! That was in 1994! It feels like a lifetime ago (cuz it kinda was!)!!!

I had to laugh at one point because I helped produce radio drama which are all audio and no functional visuals. But I will keep my fingers crossed because the 28th is my 42nd birthday. (Though I think my biggest present will be the kids returning to school after spring break!)

Completely innocent Q: With the revision being 17+ years old, will this make the content (of which I am sure is great) expired somewhat? I ask as I assume there are structural revisions continually.
How I did in all the screenplay contests I entered!
