I got so excited about this lens when it first came out in 2014. An ultra-wide lens that finally opened up the world of ultra-wide angle photography to anyone on a lower budget! Does it still have that shine in 2023, though, 9 years later?
'God's Land of Morning Calm' (the documentary I mentioned): • God's Land of Morning ...
This lens will work on Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, but NOT full-frame digital SLR cameras. It will also work on their EOS M system and RF-mount cameras, but only with the appropriate adaptors, and it will only give an APS-C image circle. Got that?! ...well, still less complicated than the compatibility issues for old Nikon DSLR lenses heh heh.

I own this lens - FYI - you can swap the lens mount with an eBay replacement lens mount that then allows the lens to be used on full frame Canon DSLR cameras as well as film cameras. It is usable from 12mm-18mm on FF SLRs. The most entertaining use I've found for it is on the 6Dm2, where it works for 12-18mm full frame 1080P with IS. The trick doesn't work on RF cameras though :(

Something that caught a lot of 90D users off-guard was how demanding a sensor that dense can be (both have 32mp sensors). I actually joined a group on FB just to help people figure out what was going on with their photos not being everything they expected. Granted, a lot of it was user error or just plain unreasonable expectations, but we found some lenses to just not have the punch needed to push the sensor, especially in the case of moving subjects. What I am finding on the R7 is the much more sophisticated AF system negates some of the issues that might have just been missed focus on the 90D, where even a slight miss could ruin a shot due to the nature of the sensor's density being so sensitive. I have far less trouble on the R7, but I would be sure certain lenses are still not ideal as they just lack resolving power overall. Basically, older lenses were made in an era before high MP existed, and over time lens design has gotten better. I would think any RF and RF-S lenses will be fine. Most lenses made after 2006 should also be fine. Macro lenses seem to just beat all the odds and just kill it. L glass from the EF mount, well, it's not all the way across the board here. Anything that was a mkI tends to be less ideal, while the mkII and mkIII versions are tops. Even some cheap lenses do well, like the EF 50mm F1.8 and EF-S 55-250mm IS STM (the STM version is the only one I suggest here, the older 2 versions are a no-go). Primes usually hold up. It isn't as perilous as it might sound, just be aware of it.

The fact that this delivers good sharpness on a 32mp sensor is seriously impressive. Crazy to think the optical design is nearly 10 years old! Seriously ahead of its time. The EF-S lineup from canon in the 2010s was seriously good. If I go onto the R7 (I am planning to buy a new body this year) it'll be thanks to these lenses!

I remember back then people complain about the aperture...just like nowadays
@B_-.-
@B_-.- Жыл бұрын
@@zegzbrutal Well on my personal favourite, the 55-250, often has people talking about the fairly boring F5.6 max aperture. Sure it's boring, but, it's very practical. It lets in more than enough light for daytime action shots, or dawn/dusk shots on non moving subjects (With the IS on of course) - what more could you ask for out of a cheap lens? And as cameras get better at higher ISOs, it only becomes more usable as time goes by. Infact, Canons own "replacement" - the EF-M 55-200, goes down to F/6.3! - As do many cheaper tele lenses. It's not much darker sure, but it goes to show that F/5.6 isn't exactly dark. Same applies to most of the EF-S lineup. On UW lenses, you want to capture a lot, so you want a deep DOF anyway. If I owned one of these (I am tempted) I'd probably use it at F8 a lot of the time anyway- as I'm sure most would.

This is a great review and follow up with the newer mirrorless bodies. I’m looking to upgrade to an R7 and have this and some other EF-S lenses. Due to the limited options on RF for crop sensors at the moment, it’d be great to see some more of these revisits for other older EF-S lenses. I’d vote for the 18-135 STM, because I have one of those haha

Some quick hits for you for lenses I have used on my R7... EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM - Just as superb as it always was! So sharp for what I consider to be a must have lens for EF-S users. And since the R7 is pretty small, it makes such a compact setup, not to mention IBIS is awesome for lenses that have no IS. The adapter does add some size to it, but overall it's still pretty compact. Rumor is there will be a RF-S 22mm F2 at some point here, likely a re-mounted version of the very popular EF-M lens. Looking forward to that! EF-S 55-250mm IS STM - Again, it holds up. In a side by side test against the older 24mp 80D, there is a clear advantage in sharpness on the higher res sensor with this lens. So it resolves very well. Still has the drawback of the slow STM focus, but if you know how to do things like pre-focus, or don't shoot a lot of action, you will see the difference in resolution. EF-S 18-135mm IS STM - I didn't have this one, I had the newer nanoUSM version, but IQ is about the same. It's not bad, I didn't see a big difference in IQ from the 24mp or 32mp sensor. Still good though, and this lens is more about versatility than anything. I would suggest looking into the RF-S 18-150mm lens that can be bundled with the R7. It surprised me how good it was, and side by side does a better job overall than the 18-135mm. It even has fairly minimal focus breathing, making it great for close up shots! The smaller size is nice too. But if you have the 18-135mm you can use it and it will be fine. I don't have the Tamron lens to test, sorry.

Its pretty good. I have used on the R7 and 90D, and found it to do decent in front of those demanding sensors. I think it is better on the R7 as the AF is so spot on. I've mostly shelved mine though for the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8, as it just works so well on the R7. Rumor is Canon is doing an updated version for the RF-S series, but so far it's just a rumor. I hope so, as I always felt it needed an updated model with more recent engineering, lens coating, better overall IS, and nanoUSM. And the design was always kinda blah, it looks like a lens released in the early 90's but was released in 2006. I think an RF-S model could be all the things I wanted in an mkII of the EF-S model.

This quickly became one of my favorite lenses back in my days of shooting with the Rebel T3i. Up until that point I had not bothered with an ultra-wide due to them not really being in abundance on crop cameras and their cost just wasn't appealing to me at that time. This one stepped in at that 300 USD price point and turned out to be a good performer. The lightweight made it easy to keep with me, and the wide angle of view made for some fun compositions combined with that close focus. Its still the lens I most commonly suggest to people on crop sensor Canon cameras. As a side note, it has always disappointed me how a faster version of lenses like this was never made by Canon. An F2.8 model in the same style as the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM would have been a welcome addition to the line up for those that just wanted something more and didn't want to have to get a full frame setup that would add not only cost but a lot of weight too. As it stands, I know of only two AF lenses with an F2.8 constant aperture that have a similar zoom range, the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 and 11-20mm F2.8. Canon just never took their crop series all that seriously, and I while I realize a lens like this would likely still be the more preferred to the budget minded, I think there are a lot of enthusiast out there that want a faster version of lenses like this and would put the money into it. Even though I am now much more invested into full frame setups, I still keep a crop setup as it is lighter overall for those times where I just don't need my L glass. The 10-18mm goes in that bag, and my back is much happier when I am out walking around for 8 or so hours at a time.

One amazing thing about this lens is its image circle coverage, making it a budget ultra wide full frame lens too. When I mount it with an adapter on a full frame camera and zoom in at around 14mm, the vignette becomes very acceptable. Also this lens is a hack to counter the 1.6x 4k crop on earlier RF mount cameras.

This is great to know because I believe that this qualifies this lens also for the canon 90D and for the canon eos M6 mKii unless there are more in camera corrections going on in the R7 (is this the case by the way?). These reviews dealing with the existing lenses adapted to high pixel density cameras are extremely useful. Other useful ones would be the EF-S 55-250 mm stm and the 2 EF-M zooms you recommended (EF-M 11-22mm and EF-M 50-200mm). These zooms cover all the basics and have not yet received the attention they deserve concerning their adaptability to high pixel APS-C density cameras

Depending on the version you have, it can be different. The STM model I found to work decent on the 32mp sensor. In a side by side comparison with the older 24mp sensor of the 80D I found it to have no clear advantage; it just doesn't have the resolve to fully use the higher resolution. Which isn't bad, it still looks pretty good. If you were happy with it on whatever you have now it will still give the same results. If you have the older IS II or the original IS version, those don't fair so well. I would either trade up to the STM version or, if you are going to put some money into a lens anyway, look into the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM instead. Used they can be found for under 400 USD now, and they are a large step up from any of the kit lenses.

I felt that the IS wasn't that important versus the extra light, since I don't do too much videos, and the extra light is more useful in darker situations, and at wider angles, IS is not too important, just need to increase the speed a little, but still keep the iso lower, and a full frame equivalent of 17.6 is plenty for super wide situations.

What a surprise. I was watching the original video of this lens just yesterday and wondering how it would perform in a mirrorless camera.

Can you please review the Ricoh GRIII or GRIIIx? It would be really interesting to see how that camera and its built-in lens would perform in your test.

Wow, your copy is significantly sharper than mine. I got it for my 80D (24MP) and was never all that happy with it, but it is soft even on my R6II in 1.6x crop mode (~9MP). Guess I had real bad luck with it.

I use this on my M6mk2 when my 16mm F1.4 sigma isnt quite wide enough. Its good. I would upgrade to the R7 for a bigger buffer but Im really happy with the pocketable size of the M6 so I'll keep it for now. Its my B camera for stills and I use it on a gimbal for videos. The 10-18 is always in my bag, doesnt get a lot of action to be honest but thats probably because I dont shoot a lot of ultra wide.

I'd appreciate reviews of super wide, manual focus options from third party makers. I understand that there will be no autofocus lenses for RF but there are several companies making primes in the 9-13mm range. A few are in RF but it seems odd that there are many more options even for EF-M.

The EF-S 10-18mm is useable *IF* I keep its titanic field curvature in check (center focus can be at infinity and corners more like 12 feet). The trick is to set the focus *much much much* farther out, stop down to f/8, and use the lens's deep depth of field to my advantage. Indoor photos are less of a problem (where the subject field is often curved to fit the lens). Adapting onto a 'cropped' MFT mount works well (crops the worst of the corners). MFT speed-boasting is not a good idea. FYI - I passed on the R7 because it shoots abysmally mushy UHD 60fps fullish-frame video using some sort of horrendous line-skipping process. Otherwise a great camera.

Great video. How does the canon 10-18 compare to the ef-m 11-22 on the Canon m6 mark ii, since the r7 and m6 ii both have the 32.5 sensor?

I used the 10-18 for several years mostly for interior photography. Had decent image quality. Two downsides for me were corner performance after corrections and nasty small green flares from ceiling spotlights I had to stamp out every time. Later replaced it with 17-40L on Eos RP. To me image quality is way better but price and weight doubles.

The 10-18 is not good at all in the corners but the 17-40 is horrible. I spent 700€ for a 16-35 f4L and this lens can be called sharp

I miss this lens, i sold it and got the Tamron 10-24 and it is brighter and sharper in the corners but the Canon just had more character, not sure what it is but I took some of my best landscapes with it.

I can help on a couple of those... 10-22mm - The 10-18mm pretty well outperforms it on the 32mp sensor. It just lacks resolving power to make a difference, likely due to its age and overall design (wasn't intended for sensors with such high density). Still does ok, if you have one it should work decent. I and others found it has to be stopped down to get any real clarity though, but that is common on a UWA lens. 15-85mm - I didn't have one to test, but seen plenty of shots from this lens in FB groups to know it is a good match. 60mm Macro - the macro lenses of the world are a special breed of lens. They seem to just always be sharp due to their special nature. Comparing against the older 24mp sensor of the 80D I found it to have a clear advantage in sharpness in the texture and details of a subject, which of course is the bread and butter of macro shooting. I only got rid of mine as I was using my 100mm macro more often and felt someone else might as well get some joy out of what was my very first "upgrade" lens many years ago. 35mm Macro - I didn't have one to test, but I would guess its the same case as the 60mm. I have yet to meet the macro lens that doesn't make the 32mp sensor it's bitch.

Use it with M6ii and BMPCC 4K for video. The color is very warm. It is soft when I try to shoot with some backlight. It just doesn't match well with the EFL lenses. It is a decent lens in optimal condition. But I find it quite lacking when I'm trying for more creative shots. But this video makes me want to give it one more try before buying a more expensive wide zoom. Because the other options are pricey!
