I have an old mare I haven’t ridden in quite a few years. After my horses were killed in a collision with a truck when I was younger I lost touch with riding, when I got patches as a rescue shed ride but we didn’t really have a connection. My dad got hurt on her afew weeks into having her, and I just never got back in the saddle, years have past now and I spent the last 3 summers just spending time with her. I plan on reintroducing her to riding this summer, she still lets me put her in full tack and all, I think we’ll be just fine, she’s a bit buddy sour but over the years she’s gotten better about being separated from our gelding she practically raised from when he was barely a yearling, she’s very well mannered and sweet as sugar, before she was rescued she was basically a guide for an old blind horse up until she passed. As broke as I am I just got a Martingale and new bridal + headstall cause the one we have is so old is hard as a rock! I wanna say Thankyou for making this video wish me luck

okay, thank you for the warning, i’m never doing anything you did to that horse. the whole time the horse was great but you acted like he was some wild beast? he was nothing but respectful and bucked and crow hopped when you flew that whip at him. the only way you can successfully break a horse to your liking is if the horse doesn’t hate you, the horse hates you because you never showed him one second of patience and kindness. i watched this to get education before i get on my 8 year old i haven’t been on for a year and i don’t recommend this to anyone.

I restarted my horse after 5 years of no riding. He was 4 when I started him and nearly 10 when I got back on. Luckily he was too fat and lazy to resist, but he still is unpleasant to ride. The reason for the lack of riding, was first I suffered an injury in a car accident and then he injured himself frolicking in a pasture. Between the 2 of us we were laid up nearly 5 years. I didn't trust anyone but me to ride him. I was surpised how much he remembered and didn't buck me off, but he is still very lazy and shuts down like a donkey in protest when he's done.

I understand the dominance the horse needs to feel; having you as the lead but this needs to be out of respect and not fear. Yes you will break this horse all over again but the woman who owns him will most likely get hurt because he is learning how to have enough and fight back. He is scared and confused here!

(100% MY fault) I adore this crazy mare so even if she never makes a safe riding horse she will be my oversized puppy dog the rest of her life🥰

I don’t really see how running the horse around until he is pissed at you is gonna help. He needs to know that it’s fun to be ridden. And if when you try to get in your snack down on the stirrups that gonna make him scared of you. Instead of doing that you can give him treats when he does the behavior you want. Horses respond very well to vocal commands. And you wanna be a team. Forcing a horse to do something is gonna make him mad he might let it happen for awhile but he will blow up when he gets mad enough. I’m not saying that the horse cant be Disciplined. I’m just saying that starting small with a walk. Then working from the ground for awhile then trying trot and maybe canter. He needs to be horse and have fun. And instead of shoving the bit in his mouth maybe let him see it again and let him sniff it so he knows it not bad. And then give him treat and say good boy. If you just get on him about bad things he does he will not respect you. I’m not hating or anything I’m just seeing what you think about my opinion. ( that paragraph probably made no sense but what ever).

It sounds like he is pretty green. I would maybe start fresh with groundwork. There are plenty of videos on KZfaq that you can go off of to get the ideal I like Clinton Anderson because he is really good at explaining things what he does is nothing new but he is a great teacher and doesn't leave anything out. But I would start fresh and start from the ground up

1:26 is it really the horse that's obnoxious 🤔 what are you hoping to achieve by jabbing him with your elbow and yanking on his head for no reason? It's not like you kept up the cue until he faced you. Utterly pointless. ETA: when he did finally face you, you pushed his face back away from you ?! What would you hope to achieve with this?

Sorry to leave this comment, but in your first two minutes you have pushed, yanked, pulled the horse's head even though he was just standing there. Why is he not allowed to look around? He wasn't trying to get away from you or stepping on you. You pushed his head away several times, and then pulled his head back toward you. You are not aware of your own body. Pathetic.
