Torque to 200-300 ft lbs !!! Sometimes they have zero torque when you take the cover off. 200-300ft lbs is a good number for used bearings.

Meritor has a spread sheet on Google. I printed and taped it to my toolbox. Steers, non-drives, drives, Pro-Torque, jam nut, under and over 2 5/8"... all have different torque values and procedures. Dont just guess like this. Best case, you either smoke and bearing and banjo. Worst case, ya lose the whole assembly and end up in the clink.

Well i just discussed this with a mechanic today he said to set the preload tighten it as much as possible while spinning it then back off a full turn will be lose then put your nut on and bar on the nut and dont press down just let the weight of your hand on the bar do the tighting when it stops going down with juat the weight of your hand on it your good you have set the pre load put the rest the shit back on in order it was taken off tighten outter nut tight as u want and put lock tabs down ....dont forget to add some gear oil in the bearings and dump the rest in the rear diff he said never tighten that inner nut by torqing it tight or u will blow everything out and end up replacing it all the outter nut he said is the one u want to get pretty tight
@johnmorrow1628 Жыл бұрын
According to stemco torque procedure it's 200ft lbs back off 1 full turn torque to 50ft lbs and the back off 1/4 turn check endplay is 0.001" -0.005" If its a proloc it's 0.001"- 0.003" If you have the spacer cone in-between the bearings you torque to 300ft-lbs You should be using a dial indicator to check your endplay. Bearings actually like a bit of preload but the only way to check for that is to wrap a rope around your studs and pull with a fish scale and see if the pulling force is with in manufacture specs
@nikoz4841 Жыл бұрын
If nut is loose, then spacer is worn. Needs to be removed with screwdriver and a magnet. Set the brakes to save your seal , remove hub nut, outer bearing, get that spacer out, put everything back, and adjust the bearing. Spacer is only good when your yruck is new.

@@markpalazzolo1463 oh ok. I'm not doubting bro. I've had my truck for a year and have learned so much. The one thing I've learned for sure is that the shops are getting rich on drivers who can't fix still l stuff themselves. I did my axel seals on my rear drives a few days ago. I studied and read and read and read before I dove into it. From multiple sources I kept seeing 300ft lbs. So that's what I went with. So far so good 😂 The wheel spun freely before I sat it down. Hopeful I'm right. I drove from Georgia to Chicago no issues. 😂

@bigcaputo09 Жыл бұрын
That is a conmet preset hub. It's 300ft lbs. It has a spacer in between the bearings. That sets the end play. If you don't tighten it tight enough the bearing will spin and destroys the cone witch will put metal in the oil!

So just neglect TMC RP 618? Even though this is a unitized hub assembly it still needs to be properly torqued and set, even if you are reusing the assembly on the same wheel. Wow. If your going to torque wheel bearings without a spacer cone, never go higher than 50 lbft. You can torque a conventional hub bearing setup to 50 lbft while rotating the wheel and it will be just fine. 200 lbft!? Not so much! And don’t be the guy that globs silicone all over the axle flange. It WILL leak. Get a gasket and put a thin layer of rtv on it so it stays in place during assembly. If the surfaces are clean, the gasket will last for years.
@dave3660 Жыл бұрын
And your wrong. Look up how to torque a pro torg
@thehappytexan Жыл бұрын
@@dave3660 that style of nut is not a common piece. If a hub doesn’t have a cone spacer, 90+% of the time it has a regular dual nut and lock tab ring set up. Even for the pro-torq, you have to back it off one flat when adjusting the bearings. If you put a torque wrench set to 50 lbft on it, you won’t be able to get that flat back. 50 is actually remarkably close to perfect adjustment. It has worked on millions of trucks for decades.

This is a modern style preset bearing with the other 2 common styles unitized and conventional. Setting and checking the tq on either the conventional and preset is extremely important. And often overlooked, causing 350 lbs at 70mph to slam into a mini van of 4. Do not do anything you have been taught and certified to do. Read your service manuals for proper intervals. Know a teacher from school whose employee messed up one thing killed a mother, father, and her daughter. The son had severe injuries. In a wheel off indecent. Charged with murder got 8 years 6 on good behavior. And a massive fine. A fucking joke this can be "explained in 60secs" and its a insulting to my/our industry. "I recommend 200ft/lbs" Congrats, you just became liable for that wheel. I hope it's right. You seem smart don't spew bullshit online. Like some of the comments posting info for the conventional setting of a wheel bearing. Do that to a preset you kill someone. Straight up scary, man.
