"The epitome of excellence in aviation" a quote from the Captain. To me, in a way, the retirement of Concorde without a replacement may well go down as one the saddest moments in history. It was the day we went back instead of going forward.

Even a replacement can’t match the magnificence of Concorde. The boom project and whatever other joke there is out there are just shitty compared to Concorde. Every line of the design of Concorde is graciously beautiful !

I remember being 6, and my parents saved and saved and saved every pound they could for holiday to New York. They spent half our holiday budget taking Concorde there. We took a regular airliner back. It was night and day!

Years ago, we lived in Reno, Nevada. One day, I saw the Concorde flying over the hills to the east. I don't know why they were there, but they were beautiful. Years before that, we lived in Las Vegas, and I saw a Vulcan flying over the hills near Nellis Air Force Base. Both planes were unforgettable. There was something about those beautiful machines.....

Ailerons are the flaps on the wings which are used to turn left and right in the air. A barrel roll is where the plane rolls over 360 degrees and back into level flight. Type in vulcan bomber barrel roll, that shows it pretty well.

I'll tell you why Concorde was special. It was the only aircraft, including military aircraft, that could continue to accelerate above Mach 1 WITHOUT reheat. They turned the afterburners off at some point above Mach 1, and Concorde would continue up to Mach 2 WITHOUT AFTERBURNERS. No other aircraft could / can do this. Superb design and efficiency.

It's a visor that smooths the profile to lessen wind resistance in high speed flight. But it obscures the view for landings and taxiing, so they retract it then.

The Avro Arrow was designed, built and flown in Canada years before the concorde was put into production. If you look at the two planes you notice they're deesigns are very similiar as the wings are incorparated into the fuselage allowing the plane to acheive speeds of mach 2 or higher.

It wasn't a civilian SST plane though, it was the RCAF who wanted it as an interceptor. It reached Mach 2. Which is phenomenal, given it was a 1950s project, nevertheless, concorde was a passenger SST capable of Mach 2.02 and 100 passengers plus crew. It was a fine bird the Arrow, and cost killed it, this almost sealed concordes fate too, spiralling costs, but the Brits and French government worked together to save the project. A real shame as the Arrow flew beautifully, but it wasn't in concordes league.
