The real Alice was a 10-year-old girl named Alice Liddell, who befriended Carroll when he was attending Oxford University. As the story goes, Carroll made up the story of Alice while entertaining her and her two sisters on “one golden afternoon.” “She asks again and again and again for the stories and for it to be written down,” Vega said. “It’s only because of this little girl’s absolute persistence in not letting it go that we have the story today.” According to Vega, Alice Liddell grew up to live a “pretty conventional Victorian life.” After her husband died, she found herself facing financial difficulties and was forced to sell Carroll’s original manuscript that he had given her as a child. “She had it for almost her entire life,” Vega said. “She was a little girl when she received this manuscript, and it was only near the end of her life that she parted with it.”

I had heard that Alice never went to Wonderland. It was all in her head. Not in a dream. But that her real life was so horrible for her, that she dissociated entirely and started hallucinating and became increasingly paranoid. In truth, it's about a story of a young girl dealing with the loss of her father and onset mental illness, who wanted nothing more than to desperately escape her powerless life. She created an entire fantasy in her mind as a way to escape her existence.

Steampunk Wilson: It's perfect in that respect to me, too. I love the depth of character for the Hatter, especially -- that he's mad not because he's a hatter or from using mercury, as was common in the real world. This is Under/Wonderland anyway, so we don't know if they use mercury or anything else like that. The Hatter is mad because his heart was broken when everything and so many people he loved were destroyed by the unprovoked Red Queen's attack. And it split him two. So, he's interesting in two different ways. haha

Hatters worked with Mercury and constant exposure to the fumes caused Erethism (Mercury poisoning or Mad Hatter Disease). Erethism is characterized by behavioral changes such as irritability, low self-confidence, depression, apathy, shyness and timidity, and in some extreme cases with prolonged exposure to mercury vapors, by delirium, personality changes and memory loss. People with erethism often have difficulty with social interactions.

i think it's very important that she starts to get the hang of things when she starts actively making her own decisions, going to save the hatter despite everyone else telling her to go to the white queen. for me it highlights that this is about alice "growing up" and becoming her own person. her allies in wonderland push for her to go to the white queen not out of malice, they are on her side, but she still has to make her own choice for the plot to progress and for her character to develop; it mirrors her "real" life, where she is being pushed by people again not really out of malice but rather their own self involvement or a "this is what is proper, this is how things are done" kind of thinking. she cannot be alice unless she decides, and so she does

Number one, The reason why the whole atmosphere of this whole thing is dark is not because Tim Burton is uncapable of making bright colorful atmospheres, but it’s because he wanted it to make it look like as if the red queen took over everything so everything went to bad. In the second movie because the red queen is not the queen anymore in the second movie it’s a lot more bright and lovely, I highly suggest you see that movie. Secondly, the reason why it’s not like the original Disney movie is because Tim was trying to make it a lot more like the original book, which in my opinion was a fantastic choice, there was so much that the original Disney movie have left out, that and this time. It’s supposed to be years after she visited wonderland for the first time. Like this would be her second time visiting Wonderland. Which is why a lot of the characters in this movie looked nothing like the original Disney version, he was going for the book version. And just probably my favorite detail of the whole thing is the fact that the people she meets outside of wonderland like the real people were kind of boring at the wedding are supposed to be the counterparts of people in wonderland. The guy that she was going to marry actually supposed to represent the Jabberwocky in the way she defeated it, the two twins are you supposed to be twiddle dee and twiddle dum counterparts, The mother of the guy she was going to marry is supposed to represent the red queen which is why she is so snotty and rude. And the husband of her is supposed to be the counterpart of the blue Caterpillar. Just a lot of details that not a lot of people realize, very much apologize for the long comment

Fun fact: I didn't realise this when I was a kid. The name Jakarta didn't exist in the 19th century or whenever this movie took place because Indonesia was still called The Dutch-Indies, under the occupation of the Dutch and the capital was called Batavia. It was later in 1945 after they officially gained independence and then became Indonesia and the capital name changed to Jakarta.

The question "Why is a raven like a writing desk? was answered somewhat by the phrase, " Because they both produce flat notes." Lewis Carroll never actually had an answer when he wrote ' Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. It was something that was answered much later. I believe he answered the question in a letter to a friend.

So glad you watched this! In the past, I wasn't ever into the AIW thing but years ago, once this adaption came to Tv, I gave it a shot one day. Mostly because JDepp was in it. I came away just loving it!🤗 I especially love how Alice even though she kept trying to make sense and talk herself out of everything she was experiencing....that she basically said in a sense- F-It! Puts on the armor and tells herself those things in her countdown to build herself up and toss what convention of the time she grew up in to stand strong and get the job done in killing the beast! 😁 She took what she learned back with her to change her life as an empowered young woman. I've watched this movie over the years quite a bit, esp. if I might be having a rough few days. Anyways, I loved that the Hatter when PO'd goes into full Scots mode lol. And Depp does it too awesomely. (I happen to be part Scottish by heritage, and go sometimes to the local Scottish/ Highland Games.) Slante' guys!🍹🍻

fun fact, Iracebeth is actually the red queen and not the queen of hearts and her younger sister is the white queen. The entire movie is set in the kingdom of Chess, hence why the battle field looks like a chess board. The movie has portrayed the Helena Bonham carter as a mix of the red queen and the queen of hearts. But, Hearts is an entirely different kingdom in the book.

Short answer: Tim’s Alice has absolutely…positively….NOTHING to do with Lewis Carroll’s book. (Except for that flashback at the end that gets it so right, you wish he could have made that movie.). Most.of the shenanigans are left over from a Dark-Alice-videogame movie Wes Craven wanted to make, with most of the game’s mistakes intact-Like the Queen of Hearts referred to as the “Red Queen” (from another book), or suggesting she actually did off heads. 🤦. Short answer #2: The Disney cartoon got it right.

Yea I don't think it should be rlly compared to the book or the disney cartoon cuz it was made to be different. Why have another live action remake when you could have a darker squeal? I think on its own it's still a good movie with the dialogue and the epic battle scenes. It's basically its own movie, and I don't think that's a bad thing. I respect your opinion but I just can't agree.

Great review. This was indeed an interesting movie. I love the design of the characters - especially the red queen with her giant head. The costumes were creative and colorful and helped tell the story as well as the stages and scenery. This felt almost like a sci-fi mashup with the dragon slaying and stuff - it was a little less fairytale and a little more grownup. The dancing at the end though - kinda strange. Threw the whole movie off at the end with mad hatter doing some hip hop dance moves. Would love to see you guys review The Last Dragon, The Golden Child, A Family Thing, Soul Man, Jumping The Broom. Just sayin.

you need to watch the original alice in wonderland then. i just wish people today would react to the original movies too. i found johnny attractive as mad hatter like i found him attractive in edward scissorhands, the Caterpillars is Alan Rickman , did you notice it has Helena Bonham Carter in it who is the queen of hearts who played in harry potter as bellatrix if you haven't see it, and has Anne Hathaway who played the white queen.Crispin Hellion Glover played the knave of hearts, he played in 2000's charlie's angels with drew barrymore in it. of course i like my original disney cartoon movies growing up, but i liked these. this movie may be underrated cause i watched it growing up and the evil lady on there scared me and still does, the movie is called Sword in the Stone, it's the 1963 one, can you please react to that movie.

A Raven is like a Writing Desk because (Edgar Allan) Poe wrote extensively on both. The actor for the Knave, Stayne is the "Creepy thin man" from Charlie's Angels (2000's). Alice freaked out when the White Queen asked her to fight because of the parallel to the Marriage Proposal.

When u said the editing was odd, it was actually intended I think cause the whole part before she goes into the wonderland is confusing ( even in the book). I think of it as so: When we r seeing real things that happen around us, we try to make sense of them. The whole part before wonderland is super confusing and so abruptly set up, but we try to make sense of it and get confused, but after we enter wonderland, we don't even try to think rationally cause like, its all crazy and unseen and so new. Its a touch I found while re reading the book as well. I do not know if that was done on purpose by Lewis caroll but I decifer it that way

I heard somewhere that the answer to, "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" is, "Because Poe wrote on both." But that answer developed over time. It was originally supposed to be an unanswerable riddle, which makes the reaction of the Hatter and Hare in the animated film make sense.
