all URM (martians, mars) have "big eyes" and all earth'lings/earth'ians have "small eyes" (science: physics+biology: earth is closer to the sun, so the sunlight taken in, needs to be less, hence the smaller eyes, whereas mars is further from the sun, so the sunlight taken in, needs to be more, hence the bigger eyes) (we only get two see the eyes of two of the URM: Alita and briefly with the flashbacks, of Gelda, all of the other URM, all had their helmets covering their eyes in the flashbacks) (the entire solar system has been colonized, the URM/mars humans are the least changed by their planet, only having the bigger eyes as separation from the humans of earth, whereas the humans of the other 7 planets, are much less recognizable as "humans" (earth-humans / original humans / the humans of earth), and then of course, with all of the planets, you also got the cyberization too, as well (to varying and differing degrees as well)

A strange choice for cyborg faces that otherwise could pass as humans. With normal eyes, they could be infiltration agents. Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli (makers of iconic movies like Princess Monnooke and Spirited Away. Worth reacting to) said that anime took the eyes from Disney, who uses it to focus the audience on emotive faces.

James Cameron has had and maintained the film rights to Alita for decades. He knew it would take that long for film technology to advance far enough to make the adaptation possible. Even his best known modern project, Avatar was made with the final goal of pushing the motion/facial capture and CGI technologies far enough to make Alita. And there is a sequel in the works, but it had to wait for Avatar: the Way of Water to be completed. Just like Vin Diesel makes more Fast & Furious movies to build funds for furthering the Riddick franchise, Cameron uses his primary projects to fund his passion projects like this one.

@nexus1936 And that promotes the movie...how, exactly? Plus neither Gamora nor Nebula were in a movie at the time, and the sheer bullshit involved in a crossover like that would leech more money out than it would get them. Besides, it already beat the promotional stunt the competing Marvel movie did: Alita gave a little girl new arms, Captain Marvel gave a couple little girls free tickets

In the manga, Alita did seem to have a problem with remembering faces. Many times she did not recognize even enemies, though it could have been a put on given how much it irritated them. They did use a lot of sets, and foreground sets with CGI backgrounds. Ido's place was a set and many of the street settings had physical sets up close and some background, but once it got to distance views it was CGI. The Deckmen, the thing with the face that dealt with the bounties was worse than you think. They actually had a human brain in them, or part of one. People with nothing left to lose could volunteer to become a deckman, and their brains, or some of it, would be put in the that machine. They were also used in other places as lookouts, gunners, and I think in the centurians as well. The deckmen were not very capable or bright, but they didn't need to be. Ido may have been so afraid of the berserker body because it was capable of destroying the planet. It was capable of "grey gooing" the planet, as happened in the manga to Mercury.

Glad you like this, one of my favourites, and definitely the favourite movie of Yukito Kishiro, the original author. Doc Ido in the movie is the most complex character, and his journey was about self-redemption. He and his family were kicked out of Zalem as their daughter was disabled, thus not "beautiful" enough for the "perfection" of the place. His work building Motorball competitors resulted in the death of his daughter, so he vowed not to do it ever again, and he kept the body he built for her as a reminder that he failed as a father. The discovery of the broken cyborg was a chance for him to redeem himself as a father who's able to protect and bring up a child, even though he's aware that she's not his daughter. At the locker room, Alita was emotional when Ido presented her with her skates that he made himself: that's when she realized that Ido had completed his redemption as Motorball no longer cast a shadow over him. Unlike some purist viewers who are against any change to the original story, Kishiro himself liked Cameron's changes to the story and said they were improvements. And he was absolutely thrilled during the Motorball sequences: "that's exactly how I wanted it to be!"

This was the last 20 Century Fox film before Disney bought the studio. That's why there hasn't been a sequel. Fans have had petitions and have lobbied for more which has helped make a sequel possible. The Japanese author wanted assurance that his story would stay true to the Manga, which it did. He wanted no race swapping or other b.s. they're doing with films these days.

I really hope we get more movies, because the really good arcs are later ones, I think (sweet, optimistic Alita is lovely, but I was always more invested in the more matured, jaded, angry Alita of the later chapters)

So well done this adaptation fun facts Guillermo del Toro was a huge fan of the manga and terrific friends with James Cameron he gave him a manga copy and said Jim your gonna like this and wella he loved it as it's right up his alley scfi and kickass women he developed the script in about 1995 if I'm not mistaken and potentially waited to make the movie until he decided to make Avatar instead so Robert Rodriguez expressed interest in making it so he did and it worked out pretty well I think 🤞we get the sequel Alita Fallen Angel cause man i want to see more

Bonus info: Cameron spent the time and energy developing effects and technology and basically revolutionized film techniques for something like 10 years working on this movie, and released Avatar as a tech demo *for* Alita! He basically made Avatar to see if his tech was up to the task of doing justice to Alita and when it became super famous and made blazillions of money he has ended up bound to that demo movie but he's going to just put more work into the next Alita

@skwirralosborne9791 not necessarily he decided to make Avatar as he felt the technology was right at the time for it plus that was strictly his passion project he just put alita aside as cameron lost time for it unfortunately cause I would have loved to have seen how he strictly would have made it but Robert Rodriguez did a brilliant job with his script I would say alita was more influential for the cg used in Avatar 2

Her original large eyes had small pupils, making her face distracting and off putting to many people. Cameron simply increased the size of her pupils that made her eyes more acceptable and less distracting. People familiar with the manga and anime have stated that this is one of the best adaptations from these sources. Of course, every movie has some deviations. Cameron had originally planned to make an Alita movie over 20+ years ago. Hopefully with the success of Avatar 2 we will finally get a sequel. Rosa Salazar did a great job as Alita. This is my favorite movie because it portrays a strong, intelligent female protagonist with good character development with a lot of heart with a good story.

38:30 That part of the movie (and manga/anime) is a very important bit of subtlety that many people don't catch. The whole reason Ido didn't give her the combat body, as he stated, was that she was an URM-Beserker in the war. Those bodies are capable of quite literally crushing a regular human without even a thought about it, which is why the Beserkers were the most highly trained warriors for the war (it's explained more across the three manga volumes), as they were designed to combat cyborg humans from the Imperium. The subtlety lies in that she shows immediate familiarity and mastery of the body, by being able to balance on one finger, and then laying against Ido without injuring or crushing him. It was her showing him that she was finally in the body she was quite literally built for, through her years of training with the URM military.

I am just going to say this. Alita as a character is fantastic. You see her start from the very bottom, as literal garbage in a trash yard and through all of the manga you will see her develop. Over time you see her mature and become the protag you envision her to become. Hugo was like young love and doomed from the start. She developes and finds love with someone more on her level. The best thing about her is her ability to overcome. She is flawed like any human and she makes lots of mistakes. Like pissing off Zapan and others but she always finds a way through and becomes stronger as a character. She often has near mental breakdowns but alway finds her inner strength. She is incredibly resilient in that way. Good luck if you decide to read the manga. God Bless.

From what I understand the MAIN reason they haven't done the sequel yet is because Cameron is the producer and he's wrapped up with the Avatar movies right now. I know he's not the director but it seems to be enough of his project that it can't move forward without his involvement. The same motion capture stuff with the dots on the actors that they use on Avatar they used in Alita as well from what I can see so I am grateful that Avatar exists so Alita can. It's still a shame because I love both movies so I can't really say forget Avatar and come focus on Alita or vice versa, but if logistics is the problem and time then just get some more assistants James! Like 20! Have meetings, pass them notes, DELIGATE! Try to make it work, please! I want an Alita Battle Angel 2 so bad! We finally get an anime adaptation that is good (let's face it the Samurai X live action exists, we can't say we NEVER had a good anime adaptation, but Battle Angel has a female lead!!) It's not just decent or okay but a solid, good movie from an unexpected anime that so many people hadn't heard of before! You can't just leave us hanging!

Hands down the best Live Action Adaptation of a Manga/Anime I've ever seen. Okay, I know this isn't saying much (the second-best in my book is _Ghost in the Shell)_ but this shouldn't detract from the fact that _Alita_ is a genuinely great movie. And I'm so happy that a Sequel is appearantly in the works (Producer Les Landau announced it in April).

The people who made this movie worked on Avatar, The Titanic and Sin City. No worries I did some research because I actually rewatched the movie yesterday. I asked myself “ how can you end the movie in a way a movie with a sequel will end “. Come to find out the reason why we haven’t seen another movie is because the director/producers for the movie are the ones who worked on the newest Avatar movie along with a tv series on Disney+. Conversation was had with the actors to which all agreed to come and relive their characters and faught for another movie along with the director/producers if the tv series on Disney+ did a good job. I forgot the series title but I have faith the series did amazing so be on the look out for a second movie because I’m ready and will be there the day it premieres at the movies. ❤️

The first trailer scared me since I have a bit of a fear of certain eyes. However, once I got over that and went to see it in the theater, I thought it was so good. I just want to see unique things and good action and that’s what I got. RIP Hugo. While him dying twice is kind of ridiculous, I found it even more tragic since all the hard work to keep him alive turned out to be pointless. I’d be devastated in that situation if I was Alita. When/if a sequel ever comes, I’m likely to be there.

Ok so don't quote me on what I'm about to say, this is only memory from back when it came out. Cameron was going to do Alita before Avatar i think but decided to fully concentrate on Avatar. Rosa Salazar played the part of Alita, motion capture was fused with CGI so all movements and facial expressions were Rosa's. There most likely would have been a sequel but Disney bought 20th Century Fox who made Alita and they put any hope of a sequel on the back burner. At the same time Alita was coming out, Disney's/Marvel Studios Captain Marvel was coming out and they did not want Alita to take any attention away from CM, their priority and the MCU. From memory even months before the movie came out, there were many pro Disney/marvel websites and critics already bagging it out before they even watched it. The movie did better outside of the US and from memory many Americans didn't even know it existed and also had a huge problem with the size of her Eyes not being a country familiar with Manga and Alita from the original comic. This movie created a lot of talk and debate in 2019/20 on the web and the character gained a lot of love and some hate depending on what side of the fence you were.

Alita is amazing! I read the manga years ago and the film perfectly captures the look and feel of it. It's exactly what you would imagine from reading it. The only minor difference is the violence and gore is toned down. It gets messy in the manga! I kinda wish they did a different part of the story though, this segment has been done in the manga and in the anime adaptation and now in the live-action film. But I guess it is the start so it makes the most sense.

I was unsurprised at Hugo's fate, having read the manga years before the movie came out. There is talk of a number 2, but nothing concrete. This is like the first 6 chapters, if I remember correctly. It has been years since I read the manga too. in the manga one of her features was her large eyes. If I remember the whole face was CG'd.

Big fan of the manga here, while they've certainly dumbed down the source material, I still thought this was a solid adaptation, or at least the best I could've hoped for. They've basically combined two volumes into one (with motorball being prevalent in the third volume) and I thought they did a pretty decent job at it all things considered. I do think Hugo got the short end of the stick. He's fine in the movie, but his story in the manga is so much more tragic. Same with Grewishka (called Makaku in the manga, Grewishka is the name given to him in the OVA.) I think the film's biggest strength besides the visuals is Rosa Salazar as Alita. Alita's one of my favorite manga characters, and even if the rest of the movie sucks if they nailed her character I'd be happy, and in my opinion Rosa did her justice.

Here they used Chinese Wing-Chun Kung Fu (the one Ip-Man used in real life, and taught Bruce Lee when he was young) as Alita's fighting style, but in the Japanese Manga it was called "Panzer-Kunst", a made up martial art. And yes, Nova is Edward Norton. It is a nine book Manga, so it's LONG. Don't worry, a sequel is on the way (after another Avatar). There is a couple of "making of Alita" on YT.
