The reason Tosin sounds like he's playing 3 guitar parts is because of the double-thumping technique inspired by legendary bassist Victor Wooten. He has a bunch of videos on walking you through the technique. An Infinite Regression is the first song in their discography where he used this, and it's really fucking cool. Edit: If you want more AAL, I highly recommend Ectogenesis (my favorite song) or Tooth & Claw

Tosin (the guy doing the rhythm and clean arpeggio part) is doing a slapping variant called double thumbing (where the thumb comes down and does a double stroke before the fingers follow with pops or ghost notes) and a selective variant on the clean section where he hammers on and double-thumbs the next two notes on the string before using hammering on or plucking the rest of the arpeggio.

@@ChaseCarneson I would second Woven Web, especially because there is a hard-to-find promo done for Ibanez. It disappeared a while ago, but can occasionally be found around. facebook.com/ibanezuk/videos/10153286723978147/ It unfortunately does not show the superb guitar support by Javier Reyes, which is brilliantly subtle and builds an almost menacing pressure before the surprise shift, but it really showcases the main work on this song, which is thumping, ghost note finger picking, and tapping. Matt Garska also gives the thumping and picking an incredible off-beat emphasis with his double base work. If you have time for a double bill (or just for personal amazement) I'd highly recommend his live playthrough with Drumeo. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLyCga6g1MqspoU.html I'd love your take on the double bass work: to me what makes it interesting is where it pauses, because it starts in time with the guitar, and intentionally breaks off. It doesn't look like he's too busy elsewhere to do it either, because there is still work, but it seems intentionally off guitar tempo only for a bar or so, and then syncs again.

Around 8:00 when you're talking about how clean it sounds. I'm pretty sure Tosin is using "selective picking", so the arpeggios are actually hammered on without picking. Which is probably why it sounds so clean, because there's no pick attack.

Very nice reaction! I really liked your phrase 'scientists with guitars'. The thing I find extremely refreshing with them (all three of them - although Tosin seems to be natural focal point) is that - even though I've been listening to music for 40 years, it is still possible to find 'pioneers' expanding the limits. As someone else mentioned below, there is a fantastic video from Namm 2016 with Tosin playing through 'The Woven Web' - they don't have 4 hands - they just do with one hand, where others need at least two ;)

You NEED to give Neurosis a listen Chase. They are an relatively unknown, but incredibly influential band with a vast catalogue of music that is downright mind bending in so many ways. Its is very unlikely that you will get a lot of requests for them but do not let that fool you, Neurosis will blow you the fuck away. Trust me on this. Personally I would love to hear your thoughts on the track Aeon from their 1996 record through silver in blood. Its a 12 minute masterpiece that will send you onto a rollercoaster ride of conflicting emotions. They aren't as technical as a lot of the things you review but their songwriting is simply outstanding. It is certainly a challenging and difficult listen in the way it switches between a gorgeous, downright fragile melody and utterly devastating chaos but well worth the attention and something I think you will be able to appreciate. They are a band that is all about the atmosphere they create and if you aren't familiar with them you should change that very soon. Among the many, many bands they have influenced are names like Isis, Mastodon or Tool. So yeah, give 'em a go.
