This song speaks to who Guts really is. Who he is internally. The quiet part all humans have that we don't let others see. It speaks to how truly sad he really is. But also gives even the slightest hint of hope. It perfectly describes his TRUE struggle. The struggle to not just lay down and die. But lamenting his plight.

His life has been filled with horror and violence since the day he was born and while his life might be terrible above all else he is fighting for something good inside of it. Clinging to whatever faint light of hope he can regardless of how small and fighting with all he has to preserve it in the face of unimaginable suffering. Its one of my favorite quotes in the entire series in Conviction when he finds Casca again "Ever since that day I felt like I've been wandering in an endless night, but I had forgotten. That this is a world upon which the sun does rise, and for that alone I am better off now than I was back then." No matter how bad things get there is always hope.

Guts Theme scratches that itch inside my brain like not a lot can. The manga is by far the best no contest. Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Vagabond are considered the big 3 of seinen manga (seinen meaning being directed to a more mature audience with more mature themes and complex characters)

still there are more great mangas out there but yeah, i think no one would disagree if someone says berserk is the greatest manga of all time, its just that it can be replaced with some as goated titles like berserk like vagabond, one piece and hajime no ippo. but man berserk hits different.

Funfact: Vinland Saga has taken inspiration from Berserk which might be the reason it feels similar, Berserk has also inspired animanga like: Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack On Titan, Black Clover, Gungrave and even the Castlevania anime adaptation. From the game category Berserk has inspired Dark Souls 1,2,3, Bloodborne, Demon Souls, Elden Ring, aspects of Sekiro, aspects of Final Fantasy games and Dragons Dogma.

@@shokats3688 Nah dude Araki said he took inspiration from both Kenshiro from the manga/anime Fist of the North Star and Sylvester Stallone when designing Jonathan Joestar. Also Berserk started in 1989 while JoJo's started in 1987

Berserk is one of the most highly respected manga out there, it spoked a lot and inspired a lot of people, truly one of the greatest pieces of fiction. Love your analysis and reflection using vinland, hope to see more of berserk homie.

Vinland Saga's story is one of my favorites but Berserk (1997) is my all time favorite. It's hard to explain exactly why but I do recommend watching the anime, even if the animation hasn't aged quite so well.

Berserk 1997 still censors some panels. It also replaced one of the important character with regular soldiers. When I watched the anime, I also thought it was great, but after reading the manga I'm actually sad the 1997 anime did not direct as miura intended in some parts But still, The 1997 anime is the best adaptation so far.

@@zLeSshuhn As someone who had never read a single manga before reading Berserk for people like me it's likely going to be easier to get them into the 97 anime first to give them an idea of what the story is like. For me it wasn't until Zodd showed up that I was started to get curious and not until the Eclipse that I was sure I wanted to read the manga. I don't believe I would have made it through the Black Swordsman Arc without watching the show.

Guts' theme, Indra, and Forces are my favourite soundtracks from Berserk. You should definitely give the other two a try. And trust me, if you know the story of Berserk, these soundtracks will hit deeper and harder...

So my three favorites from Berserk 1997 are Murder, Earth, and Forces. “Forces” is good and fun but the other two have so much storytelling. The happiness before the horror, the Golden Age Arc in its good moments that will never come back is “Earth”. The horror that begins, the sadness that is propagated, the evil that is eternal is showcased in perfection in “Murder”. If you only react to a few, Murder and Earth have to be the ones and the implications of Murder in the anime and listening reading the manga will have you in tears if not heartbroken at best. Great analysis man, can’t wait for more!

I agree. Guts has such a dark past, present and future surrounding him. So much darkness. It’s a character that has endure all of the worst, making him extremely strong and everyone around him sees him as a monster. But what lies inside him is the child that never got a chance to grow. When I hear this track I hear little guts calling for gambino with such a strong desire to be loved.

Personally, I interpret the voices of the man who sings like young Guts inside the Demon Slayer he has become, he screams, he spits out his pain, his sadness, Miura's drawing is of a nameless excellence. Guts' look says so much. Intense.

It’s seems like it’s about revenge but it’s not. It’s about perseverance through horrible adversity and as the story progresses the greatest love story ever written. Which makes this theme hit that much harder.

This music reaches into my soul and wrenches my heart out. There’s something about the echoing quality of it that sounds like the human voice reverberating into the wind from atop a cliff overlooking the ocean; a soulful cry of despair and longing with the hope that another soul might hear and comfort the lonely, broken-hearted man. There are no words, just vocalizations that sound like the groans of pain a wounded animal or man would make; a pain so deep and emotional that no words could capture or communicate it. This theme is the lamentation of the very soul. I can’t listen to it without crying, even now

I sat down one weekend and put this on a loop and reread through the whole manga after hearing about the creators passing. I am an anime fan of nearly 30 years and this is THE revenge manga. The only manga that has made me feel sick,angry,sad and hopeful. Not DBZ which i love not FMA not Bebop or Trigun. Berserk. If this new run doesn't with him cutting Griffith in half I have no idea what I will feel. Yes I know people want him to move on and forget and forgive but nah. Lets not forget he CHOSE to sacrifice them. He told the princess that Casca and Guts and the Hawk was NOT his friends and merely tools to get what he wanted. He is a dead man.

Do it. Just do it. it might hurt you but you won’t regret it. It’s horrific yet beautiful, depressing as heck but so packed with the will to just keep soldiering on. I’m a fantasy nerd, love me some Tolkien since I was a kid, Brandon Sanderson’s stuff, anything swords, and this manga is the best fantasy story I’ve ever consumed. I feel like I need to stress this more but I don’t know how, but read it, there is pretty much nothing else like it in existence and I honestly doubt there ever will be again Edit: I do feel the need to mention to be ready for some really horrifying situations of gore and some of the worst acts humans do to one another, and it gets worse when the non humans get creative with it. Like I said it might hurt you

Guts, Thorfinn, and a character called Musashi Miyamoto from Vagabond are all constantly compared and have some similarities. Especially Guts and Thorfinn.

Okay now that you did this you have to listen to Forces of the Berserk OST. Don't get me wrong the OST has tons of good stuff even the newer anime that wasn't that good overall had a god tier OST but Forces is mandatory.

If berserk can be said to be about anything, it’s about how broken people survive in a very broken world. This song is a perfect encapsulation of that concept. While outwardly Guts is a terrifying vision of destruction seemingly devoid of humanity, he isn’t, not really. Instead, he and his compatriots are forced to suppress their feelings in order to survive. But those feelings still exist. They still feel emotional hurt, they still need the comfort and friendship of one another, they’re still *people*. Most of the protagonists, if they had their way, would leave war and battle behind if they could, and would spend it with their friends. But the great tragedy of berserk is fate and causality seem to have other plans. Plans that our heroes must continue to struggle against in order to eek out some semblance of what passes for “normal” life.

Revenge is part of it, but there's much more. All the Dark Soul and Elder Ring games was inspired in some aspect in Berserk characters. Is a Dark Fantasy manga title. In fact in the past people didn't even recommend the original anime despite having better animation than the 3D fiasco from a few years back, mostly because the ending is basically hentai and gore. Fans would even call it filler, despite not being. But in true it ended in a cliff hanger, something totally normal to happen in the 90's or 2000's. There was too many titles to cover and not many studios to do it all. Most great anime titles are short having a dozen or 2 dozen episodes. And some great titles that require more than that end up being affect by the season norm. Berserk is a great example. The manga and the OST is still amazing.

yes, but a renewal can't hurt, e.g. with Studio WIT, they would be perfect for Berserk but they prefer to work with one piece at the moment. So the anime Berserk would always be put aside and I think that's a shame

You've got one of the themes of the work. However,I wouldn't say guts theme is focused in that, as its set in a very specific part of the story about dreams, goals, and realizations that inflict an existential weight of sorts, that expands when he is reminiscing of his life and purpose.

If you like this song you should check out Ash Crow for the sort of opppsite theme, if Guts could be simplified to two songs, it would be those two: His Theme and Ash Crow. I won't spoil any themes in it except that it's as if not more dark sounding.
