The fact they easily sell a $3,300 dress for $1,999 and still make a profit says a lot about the profit margins of wedding dresses

When I worked in a bridal salon, we would sell sample dresses at or below cost mostly because we needed to get rid of them and often they had some damage from being tried on by multiple people. I don't know about Kleinfelds, but generally the mark up on bridal gowns is lower than the mark up on regular clothes.

I think it's kinda evil that they put the brides in dresses that go so much over budget and make them fall in love with them and put all that pressure for them to fork out thousands of dollars more than what they said they were willing to pay. If the budget is 500 and they don't have 500$ dresses, turn the client away. If the budget is 1000$ and they DO have 1000$ dresses but keep showing them 2k ones, that's just mean-spirited. I like watching the videos when it's about dress choices but i hate when it's about budget.

a wedding dress like any gown is an intricate affair that is usually tailored specifically to the person buying it (unless it is on sale but then you need to alter it which can also be quite pricy 200 dollars at the very least but usually more than that I'd say). In general I think we forget how much effort it is to make a beautiful gown like a wedding dress. As an example, if the person making the dress needs 10 hours for the whole process and they get paid a living wage let's say 10-20 dollars an hour then the cost of making that dress without materials is 100-200 dollars alone. For a nice gown you need at least 2 meters of 2 to three different fabrics (lining etc.) which can be quite expensive if the material is decent so that is another 50 to 500 maybe even thousand dollars in materials (real high quality silk can go for hundreds of dollars a meter). Then you would end up with 150 to 700 plus production costs alone for one gown. Now these brands and stores need to make money. For fast fashion they usually sell the garment for roughly ten times the production cost (sometimes more sometimes less). So if it costs 150 dollars to make one gown most brands will probably sell it for 3 to 10 times the production cost so a standard non shitty labour conditions sown gown would be sold for at least 450 dollars or 1500 dollars. I think we often forget that high quality clothes are expensive. And wedding gowns are harder to make so naturally they are way more expensive (that's a gown not a t-shirt). 500 dollars for a well made dress is really not that much. I get that it's still a lot of money but it is really unrealistic to get a decent quality dress for 500 dollars in a boutique like the ones from syttd for many of them 500 dollars probably barely covers the production costs. If one is shopping in that price range a department store, home made or a mall are the way to go.

Agreed. And I have a feeling the saleswoman picked out a $500 dress she knew wasn't the most flattering so she could convince them that they 'needed' to spend more. Not to speak for all salespeople - but they're quite literally trained to swindle people. My cousin worked as one once and she was always getting reprimanded and retrained for actually listening to customers when they said something was too expensive and helping them find things that actually fit what they wanted. Definitely do your research before going to these boutique styled wedding shops. I'm noticing a lot of the more exclusive shops have begun hiding the prices of the dresses online, so be careful with where you buy, even if you do have a larger budget. They ARE shady bc they know they can pressure you and manipulate you into feeling like you HAVE to buy more.

@@ttintagelit’s not about “expecting them to lie”. The tradition is about sharing the experience with the people most important to you. Even when I go ordinary shopping with friends if I’m with a friend who I know is more sensitive or easily swayed by outside opinions I’ll encourage them towards the choice I can tell will make them happy. Cause they’re my friend and isn’t the point that they find something they like? In situations like that I guess I just don’t feel like I need my opinion to be heard so bad that I would sacrifice a good time and a forever memory with a friend just to voice: hey I don’t like that thing. Sure, they could work on being less sensitive or people pleasing or whatever - but nobody’s perfect, we all need friends, and I can be a friend and help them out.

@@fizzigigsimmer6090 It's not actually a "tradition" at all. It may be a widespread practice now, but it's a fairly recent development, like turning the bachelorette party into a luxury vacation. If you bring people with you shopping for a dress, the expectation is that you want their opinion on said dress. The expectation for them is that they will give it politely but honestly. Otherwise there's no point and you've just made everything harder on everybody for no reason.

@@ttintagel What is it that you think tradition means? People create traditions in their friend groups and their families every day. I'm not sure why we're policing how long something has to be done culturally before random folks on the internet can call it a tradition lol. But since dress shopping has been happening for at least three generations within my own family I'm 100% comfy calling it a tradition. And in my own experience with that tradition, the event is about the bride sharing a special moment with their loved ones. If I'm not the bride then it doesn't matter whether or not I think the dress is right in the end. I can give my honest opinion without being an ass, and I can read the room to know when it's time to just be supportive and have a nice moment with my friend. It's that simple.

@@fizzigigsimmer6090 You can define any word however you like. You can be as comfy as you like calling a cat a dog, but you can't pretend to be offended when other people hear it meow and say, "Nice kitty." A tradition is a tradition and a fad is a fad, and the latter doesn't come with an established set of rules and expectations like the former. If you expect the people you're bringing along on a social media/reality TV trend to lie to your face, you need to spell that out to them before they decide whether or not to be involved.

Wedding dresses are expensive because of the kind of materials used, aswell as the fact they're not usually produced in bulk, but by order. there's also the matter of having unrealistic expectations when you are walking into a designer boutique (specifically one like Kleinfelds). If this granny truly thought she could walk out of there for less than $1k+, she's severely out of touch at best and delulu at worst. (Tho I am pretty sure most of the show was manufactured/scripted. Some of the financial drama might be partially true, but once it was filmed they would give the dress away BTS, both as charity in exchange for the family allowing filming, and as a tax write-off.)

A simple/plain dress that's made well and made with good material looks so much better than an elaborate one of lower quality.

I reckon the older family members who go with them (esp that grandma) are thinking about their own dresses, and aren't taking into account inflation and just how much a dress can cost nowadays. A little bit stuck in the past

I hate the emotional manipulation they pulled on the last old lady like they went waaaaay over budget like not just twice but that that dress is five times what she was expecting to pay + an extra hundred... That's just insane to do to an old lady... specially one that raised you like WTF. I know the bride is young and seems kind of detached from how much money is actually worth but like that's you grandma are you seriously willing to swindle your own grandma for a single use dress? Like even if you resell it at half the price it still wouldn't cover the difference...

The thing is, with looks and a figure like Jessie's, she would look beautiful in any dress off the rack. She could wear a $500 dress and look better than a lot of brides who spend thousands.

I'm from Northern Ireland, part of the UK... My wedding dress was only £850! It's a strapless ball gown (with many netting underskirts etc)of good heavyweight Ivory Mikado, with clear & wine red embroidery & beading across the bust, into a gathered/ruched waist to 1 side & down edge of sort of a false 'wrap-around' piece of material that went from the ruching down to the hemline. There was also the same embroidery & beading down each side of the lacing on the corset back... It also had a little handbag & a wrap/shawl included! Both were made from the same material as the dress, (double thickness on the wrap & colour matched lining material on the inside of the bag), with the same embroidery & beading along the edges of each end of the wrap & around the top edge of the bag! Not sure if my description is doing the dress justice or not, but it was so beautiful & not anything like I thought I would want, (was quite princess-y & girly (completely not me)... I was thinking of something a bit more plain, relaxed, bo-ho, sort of thing, as I am a 'biker' & not really a girly girl at all! Also my hubby & a lot of our friends are all bikers too & the wedding was 'biker' themed with motorbike balloons in each of the table centres, along with motorbike makes as names for each table at reception & a bride, groom & motorbike cake topper! As our wedding was at the end of November (in N. Ireland), it kept me toasty warm, well most of me, though the wrap definitely kept cold off my shoulders & arms! & The wee handbag was such a brilliant idea,! It was perfect for my needs, at the reception & evening party! It meant I could carry things myself that I might need handy! It was big enough so I could carry my phone, purse, small emergency sewing kit, lipstick & touch-up makeup as well as a few other wee things!

Idk i actually really liked the cheaper priced dress that mami picked out at the end of the episode. The one with all the flowers on it? I thought it was beautiful and very bridal. Especially compared to the style of dress she seemed to prefer, she probably would’ve been better off just buying herself a white prom dress. That seemed to be the style she went for imo and while not cheap by any means still have more budget friendly options

It's so heartbreaking to see a group rip a bride to shreds because they don't like a dress- like critique the dress! not the person in it! I do kinda get the budget thing- like you're only going to wear it once, and pretty much whatever you wear people will be happy for you, idk, I'd jsut rather spend the cash on a lush holiday than buy a huge dress 😂 Also, I'm not certain for bridal stores but generally in the UK taxes are included in the price- unless you're buying from a trade place or something weird you expect the price tag to be what you pay

same here, the wedding itself is just one day so I wouldn't be willing to spend so much money on just a dress - and all the other expenses. have a nice, cozy wedding with the spouse of your dreams (because that's the only important part!) and then spend the rest of the money on more important stuff. and it's especially grating if the brides don't pay for the dress themselves but are upset if other won't/can't pay more for them. I'd never ever be shameless enough to ask anyone for so much money for just a dress.

Most of the dresses are more expensive than my wedding in Jamaica with a 2 week holiday and a free upgrade to their nicest ocean view room. I only paid about £60 for my Dress from Asos, it was long sleeve lace with black details. That was 7 years ago.

I feel when you have a budget and you are like that is the highest i feel comfortable going. DONT then pick out a dress that is $1000 or more over . That is what i like about the say yes to the dress from the UK they listen where the ones from the USA are like we are blowing that budget out the water. You really only wear that dress 1 time and unless you have a daughter you can hand that gown off too it goes to wast .

I couldn’t feel good in a dress if I felt I was making someone financially strain to get it for me. Mamie wants to spend 500, that is still a more than generous contribution for someone who is retired. If you want to go over you should cover the difference. The whole thing came off as manipulative and selfish.
