When I first saw your classroom tour, I was a veteran teacher who was feeling ho hum about teaching. After seeing this video and your daily vlogs, you totally changed my attitude. I bought a laminator (I didn't know they were so inexpensive) and revamped my classroom. Teacher burnout is real and seeing a young teacher so excited sparked a return of the old me. While you were reminiscing, I was saying "yep, I made that, I bought that, I used that". Thanks for helping veteran and new teachers alike!

Wow, Carol! You had the same experience that I had. Michelle's videos have reinvigorated my way of teaching! After being a teacher for over 20 years, I have had a total change of attitude, too!! I hope that she realizes how much of an impact that she has made on new and veteran teacher alike over the years with her videos.

I agree Carol, I found Michelle during the pandemic and she has brought some great energy back to my teaching. I would cringe if I had video of my teaching from thirty years ago too. We keep evolving, thank goodness! Thanks Michelle

I will say that as a student who just graduated high school, I promise to all the primary teachers out there, that, yes, in the moment it’s nice to have a “cute” classroom, that is absolutely not what mattered in the long run. I only remember what one of my classrooms looked like as a child, but I do remember every single one of my teachers.

I would love to hear that too. I just graduated high school and I was *raised* on behavior charts. I was that really good kid, and my card never got moved once in all my years of primary, but for the first time, I’m thinking about how it was constantly looming over me that I would mess up one time and I would have to move my card which would’ve been the end of my world.

100% love the original video! This reaction reminded me of the time when I decided I was going to be an elementary school teacher. I was on lunch break during in college and I was a STEM major. I loved it, but I felt it wasn’t for me. I searched “classroom tour” to watch while I ate because I always loved cute classes (even though I was in denial about being a teacher). I watched this video and LOVED it. I decided to volunteer in a STEM after school program for kids, and now all of the sudden - I’m in my 4th year of teaching and I couldn’t be happier! Thanks so much!

I definitely feel like an OG subscriber! This was the second video I watched of yours (first was pocketful of positivity)! It is absolutely fine to have those cringe worthy moments! I had them with my Dad and his room! I think the saying “mistakes are proof you are trying” is perfect when it comes to classroom design and setup! It is never perfect, but as long as the room is an inviting and functional space that’s all that matters!!

I purposefully NEVER fully set up the room with bulletin boards, jobs, etc. because I want the kids to be the ones to make the room come to life! It also helps me be mindful of putting up things that are helpful and aren’t distracting. If anyone is curious there’s quite a bit of research out there about classroom decor and student attention/distraction. Something to consider.

Hahaha I remember when “not having a teacher desk” was the biggest trend. My friend got rid of hers and regretted it. Because it didn’t actually help her reduce clutter, it just spread to different areas. I also remember the clip chart. That was not only a “trend”, my school required us to use it. It was part of our PBIS program at the time. Times have changed thankfully! I met you a longgg time ago, when we were both starting at AACPS at the new Teacher orientation. This was the year after this one. I’m glad you are doing so well! I’ve been watching your channel for YEARS.

Thank you for sharing your ideas and your experiences from " the teacher's desk " if you will . So many good ideas even if they seem old to you! Can you talk more about not organizing and leveling books? I feel kids need to read at their level in order to grow. Not all the time but mine stick to leveled books during SSR time. I work in a very rural area. Things seem to find their way to us much later. In fact clip charts were all the rage just two years ago. Glad I never jumped on that wagon even if my administration did encourage us to use them.

Me personally, I hated them as a kid. I hated whenever I was having a moment and my clip would be carried down the chart for everyone to see and think of me as a “bad” kid. It was never constructive reflection and made me feel even more shameful and aggravated. Plus, I began to feel resentment towards the kids who were constantly moving up and receiving praise. In my point of view, the clip chart does not contribute to creating a collaborative classroom community that supports one another.
@kym3541
@kym3541 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaclynstepnowski9649 I definitely understand those feelings and how a clip chart could be used in a negative way. However, mine is used with the support of the 7 healthy habits. I "raise" my students to be a family inside our "house". They always have a chance to redirect their behavior and move back up the chart. If any student ever reaches the bottom, they have basically cursed me out or thrown furniture (yes, that has happened :( ). I think it gives kids a chance to know that mistakes can be corrected and forgotten, hence the moving back up. Not to mention, there are like a solid 4 verbal encounters for redirection, deescalation techniques, redirection techniques, etc. before the first clip movement every occurs. Tabula Rasa with each new day:)

I think she meant having “set” rules. These 5 rules were from a program called “whole brain teaching”, which TONS of people used to use, yet they never even used Whole Brain Teaching in their class. I think she means that after this point she came up with rules as a class. But I can’t speak for her, that’s just what I’m thinking. This was a big trend at the time.

Amazing! But you must have spent so much of your own money! The worst part of teaching!
