Watching these, I’d say the biggest change in your content is that your reviews have become much less summaries of the film and much more analysis based reviews. It’s really cool to see the roots of your video style and how it’s evolved over time!

Which also charts how KZfaq have changed overall. Back when this came out, the big trend was the angry reviewers like Angry Video Game Nerd or Nostalgia Critic, and they were more focused on being recaps with funny jokes here and there (especially Nostalgia Critic's "reviews"). Nnowadays, they've been replaced by video essays, which are long in-depth analysis of media. It's been fun to see it evolve over time!

@@angusmaxim3450 Angry reviewers are unfortunately still prominent and many have refined the formula into a social/political hate-mongering. But many of the first generation of angry reviewers either left or branched out and toned it down. AVGN and 90% of former CA producers, to name a few.

@@calebmarmon1310 I think Nostalgia Critic is a lot better than he used to be. He rarely acts angry at all any more, and most of his reviews seem to approach the films from a position of affection, even the bad ones that he makes jokes about. I see many comment how AVGN and NC aren't any good any more and how they aren't edgy any more or whatever, but I actually find them more enjoyable how they are now and actually kind of enjoyably wholesome, and find their older reviews forced and cringey. It was a very popular fad for quite a while though wasn't it.

@@JustChrisWillDoTa I haven’t seen any of NC’s videos since before change-the-channel problems came to light. On the ‘hat thing’, I’m not sure myself what the joke is meant to be but Connery has changed outfit (blue blazer, shirt and tie -> brown suit, beige shirt and brown tie) between the scenes where he throws the hat / gets briefed with the other 00s to the second briefing scene in M’s office. Not sure how an outfit (and potential day?) change fits with the urgency of the mission but hope that somewhat helps! In the previous three films Bond's hat is tossed onto the hatstand with various results. Here he decides to just place it on the hatstand. The gag is that ironically the one time he did it "sensibly", the hat gets stolen (or taken by mistake) during his meeting.
@spyboy1964
@spyboy1964 Жыл бұрын
I think that Bond was so embarrassed that M caught him and Moneypenny talking about him behind his back, he made an awkward comment about his hat being missing even though he may not have worn one that day. I believe that this is the day after the previous scene of him placing the hat on the rack because he is wearing a completely different suit. ( On the other hand, it could be just another of the film's continuity errors )

Admittedly, I think Thunderball works mostly, for me, with the cinematography and score. There's really no denying its beautifully shot in certain places and feels like you're watching Nassau caught at a certain point in time. Plus, it does get the Bond style done right but there are elements that do drag. Honestly, if you think about it... Thunderball is a lot like Moonraker in quite a few aspects! As for your older reviews, please keep doing these rewatches. I think it was around your My Weekly Bond for The Living Daylights when I originally found your channel and subbed and would go back and rewatch them countless times. I think Die Another Day may have been your highest view count and it would be interesting to rewatch that one especially after you recently watching it in the theaters and seeing your views then and now! No matter what... Have ALWAYS loved your content!
@MarvinFalz
@MarvinFalz Жыл бұрын
I like Thunderball, for the reasons you wrote. I think the problem with Thunderball is that the filmmakers needed to make Thunderball bigger, more grandiose, to top From Russia With Love and Goldfinger. That's fine with the cinematography, the settings, the action scenes, the score, but not with the plot. Too many characters doing too many things in too many locations. I think that's ironically why the movie drags. They have put material for two movies into one. And it takes a lot of time until you get to the meat of the story, Bond investigating.

You were fair with the film, I'm surprised people would give you a hard time about that video! I'v had an interesting story with Thunderball, arguably more than any other Bond film. If you had asked 10-12 year old me to do a ranking, it would have been top 5; it was one that I watched over and over, I loved the location, I loved the underwater scenes and above all I loved the might of Spectre in that film. Then as a teenager, going into the Craig era, I completely snubbed Thunderball, probably didn't watch it in something like 8 years. When its 50th anniversary occured I watched it again and disliked it a lot, for the same reasons as you. Aaaaand now we come to my latest rewatch, I'd say 4 months ago: loved it to pieces. It drags a lot, the Patricia/sauna scene is intolerable and some of the editing flat-out sucks, but this was the most I had enjoyed that film since my childhood. I think my appreciation may have to do with Sir Sean's passing: it made me appreciate him just being so effortessly cool and casual with the role. David Z is spot-on about Thunderball, when it comes to the lifestyle, this film is second to none. It has that Terence Young magic. It is both glamour and sexy, mainly due to the characters (Fiona is one of the best villains and Domino the most underrated Bond girl IMHO). I'd take it over the majority of Craig's films anyday :D

Thunderball is for me the Bond film of which my opinion has changed most dramatically. It used to be in my top 5 but after doing a run-through of all the Bond films during lockdown I was surprised to discover I... actually didn't enjoy it very much. I think one of the things that bothers me most is all the continuity errors. This definitely has the most: minor things like towels changing colour and the "hat thing", to major things like geiger counter watch becoming a geiger counter camera by the film's end, and Bond punching Leiter to stop him saying 007 in front of a villain and then proceeding to talk about himself being 007 in front of said villain. The film is a mess, and to a distracting level imho.

These reviews of the old reviews are fantastic. I do remember reading Young saying he felt the underwater scenes slowed the pacing. The runaway success of Goldfinger probably meant the producers wanted something more in that film's style than Young's films [Guy Hamilton was offered to return but was tired after Goldfinger and turned it down] so I think your on the money. Connery was also starting to get disillusioned by Bond at that point which didn't help.

Yes thunder ball is just another Goldfinger, but remember that the movie was made without the knowledge that the movies would continue beyond the 60's or Connery at all. and yep 3:50 was me with 'A view to a kill' man, especially at my 4 older brothers who grew up and love that movie. Remeber though, THAT jetback was THE best thing to see back then and the coolest thing to exist for kids in the 60s, even if the milarity didnt continue its budget for the device at all. no but seriuously man, at 15:13, they once said they jumped the shark, but Lara literally PUNCHED the shark , so it cant be all bad :)

Hi Calvin. Wonderful to see another old review. Still very funny. I wonder if one of the problems with Thunderball was it was supposed to be the 3rd film instead of Goldfinger, but with the legal wranglings, that got shifted up the order. Then when all was sorted, it does seem to have been hurriedly put together, hence the continuity errors, and yes, the underwater scenes are a bit too long. Also, Sean Connery's performance at times seems as though he's playing a mischievous school boy, rather than a suave agent. He did look a bit tired in YOLT, but his general performance was much more typically Connery. Keep these old review shows coming.

Thunderball is awesome. Does it go on a bit too long in places? Yes. But...but...a plane flies over the ocean and paratroopers in SCUBA gear literally parachute out of the plane into the fucking OCEAN and swim down to kill the underwater baddies with spear guns. I mean that alone is just so fucking GENIUS and cool. The whole film just reeks of the mid 1960s and the absolute pinnacle of the Bond/Spy craze. It is way more than the sum of its parts.

Would you ever consider commenting on the Persuaders (50th anniversary) or The Saint (60th anniversary) episodes perhaps episodes with future actors who would work with Roger Moore during his tenure as James Bond?

I was around and remember that video as part of the OG “My Weekly Bond” series. I think I was mostly in amazement at the time that I finally found one person who disliked Thunderball as much or more than I did/do.

Great video as usual, you mentioned having a hankering to watch Thunderball again at the end, was wondering how often you rewatch the Bond movies, say over a year? I usually rewatch the whole series through at least once a year 🙂

Calvin said in a livestream that he watches all the Bond films at least once a year, some more than that, i.e, Goldfinger, Tomorrow Never Dies, Octopussy, Skyfall, The World Is Not Enough. He said TWINE is the one he watches the most

Interesting, Thunderball was never amongst my favourites until I saw it at the cinema over summer. After watching the first three in the small aspect ratio suddenly the screen was filled and the film just looked glorious. It completely changed my opinion of the film and I felt that this, rather than Goldfinger was the first real wide-screen cinematic Bond film.

Thunderball is still my favorite James Bond film and has been for over a decade since I first saw it. I will say, I enjoy the movie more as a whole rather than its individual parts, which I acknowledge are pretty weak on their own. Focusing on the individual parts really is just not the way to see this film, or any Bond film for that matter. The movie is slow moving but I actually enjoy that, because the music and the atmosphere really help to keep me invested during the longer scenes. And on that point, the soundtrack and the production are phenomenal. It's also one of the more violent and brutal of the Bond movies, since when people get shot or stabbed it really feels and looks real and genuinely painful. Out of all Connery bond movies that I would recommend to newer viewers, I would honestly pick this one because it's the most straight forward and has the fewest elements that could take people out of it, like Bond having no contribution to the events of Goldfinger and a lot of the dated stuff in YOLT and Dr. No. So yeah, the movie has flaws, but It's still my go-to for a straightforward Bond adventure.

I noticed that you have Shaken Not Stirred on your bookshelf, I have that book too. It would be a bit of work but have you ever considered doing a review of several of the cocktails featured in it? You could do it as a live stream and see how drunk you get haha. I made the "Avalanche" which was inspired by OHMSS last Christmas and it knocked me on my ass. Fitting that those drinks are so strong considering how much Fleming drank haha. Great video! These old video reviews have been interesting. It's crazy to see how different reviewing movies on KZfaq was back then and how people had to work within the confines of those rules. Also am I the only Bond fan that actually holds Thunderball in high regard? Because I love that movie and I'm surprised at the amount of fans that HATE it. To be fair I definitely have a bias towards the movie because it was the first Bond movie I ever bought but I maintain that it's much better than it's reputation. I do agree that the underwater scenes go on way too long and until watching this exact video I never noticed that there's too many characters. I always forget about Paula because her character is almost completely pointless. Her sole purpose is to be the sacrificial lamb ally since Felix is already in the movie. Still more useful than Mary Goodnight haha. All that aside it's one of my favorite Bond movies.

I remember when this one was originally uploaded. I agree with you that not all Bond films are unwatchable. But this one, DAD, and QOS, are some of my least. favorite films. I do like Claudine Auger and Adolfo Celi.

You've probably got enough requests but maybe an idea for the 'Myths' of James Bond would be looking at the rumours of 'people in the running for Bond' [such as the 'Taylor Swift cost Tom Hiddlestone the role'] and why Bond attracts so much 'fake news' from the media [such as linking Angelina Jolie to Bond each time].
