This song is such a milestone. It was one of their hits, making them more known globally. Many have commented that this song made them Nw fans.

Just watched your first ever reaction to Nightwish. Really funny. I quote: "This isn't my kind of genre. This is not something I listen to regularly, nowhere near." Oh how things have changed since then.

Since it is Halloween, the song ( scaretale )live has Anette singing it. Just right, they take you to the circus. And JUKKA goes off on the drums.

I actually prefer Tarja here on Nemo much more. Very magical, atmosphetic. Feel like your on a boat just sailing off into the horizon on a journey. The band was so magical in the Hartwell arena for this concert. But then, i got into NW in 2003 with Tarja. Her operatic/soprano style vocals were what attracted me. But i love both women. Floor and Tarja.

"Phantom of the opera" is a must for not just Tarja, but some awesome Marco vocals. A few personal favorites from that era are "Planet Hell" and "Slaying the Dreamer"

This is THE song that got me hooked on Nightwish, when the single was released in 2004, my friend showed me the music video on the music channel Kerrang! and that was it. I went home and listened to the album 'Once' over and over and over again, that then made me dive more deeply into their discography and the rest is history. While I do adore Floor's take on this song too, I do happen to prefer Tarja's darker operatic tone, just because of the nostalgia it brings for me and being that brand new fan discovering what was to become my absolute favourite band, ever.

This is the most emotional and genuine Nemo there is. And the official video...for me it is still the best video they have made.

Even though I wasn't a fan at the time, this song was always in the back of my mind.This beautiful, mysterious, enchanting song that is NEMO that eventually made me a fan in the year of 2019.I'm late, late, late.But better late than never. Hey Chase! Thank you for another great reaction. This song (as many others will probably tell you) was the one that made me fall in love with Nightwish. While Floor is a phenomenal singer I will simp for at the drop of as dime, Tarja era Nightwish will always hold a special place in my heart, it always puts a smile on my face to see reactors recognize each singer's contributions.

While on the End of Era concert how about "High hopes" sung by Marco next. I'm just love the fact that I have different version of my favorite song by Tarja and Floor.

I like the studio version of this song most. Because this is a dark song, both Tarja and Floor on stage loose this dark feeling.

You absolutely have to do Beauty of the Beast (note: OF the Beast). Absolute masterpiece of a song which utilises Tarja to her full potential.

I love all three vocalists for different songs. Some they all song well but I do have a special place for Tarja singing Nemo. This and the Siren are very Tarja songs. As for 'Annette' songs. Scaretale and Ghost River really exploit her ability to slide and twist her notes that Floor and Tarja don't really do. So seeing how you've done GR my vote is for scaretale.

I always wonder what was going through their minds during this show. Tarja was dismissed immediately after it. Like, less than an hour after this song was performed, she was out. They all look like the same "family" as they always do, but everyone other than Tarja knows what is going to happen after the show.

This song means a lot to me. It was 2004 when it was released and this was the start of my Metal- and Nightwishlove 💜

This song is the very first symphonic metal I ever heard. It was like meeting your soul mate for the first time! Nemo sung by Tarja is my most favorite song for all of my 59 years of life! I've followed NW since '04! Now I have found many many other fantastic fabulous bands. But I always come back to NW!!!! Always.

My first metal concert was 2004 Nightwish together with Sonata Arctica...still stuck in that rabbit hole and I find more and more branches going ever deeper ^^

Re: being comfortable and that having an effect on the music - I know just what you mean. Many (many) years ago, I played in a ceilidh band at weddings and birthdays and so on. You could feel the difference that the audience made: if they just wanted to sit down and drink, it was a real struggle to play and everything felt flat (as in dull, not ♭), but if they were up and dancing, it was an absolute joy and the music sounded great.

The first thing that makes me always choose Nightwish live videos over Nightwish recordings is that their musicianship is fenomenal. The second reason is that they always change bits and pieces and make things interesting live!

Everyone has complained about the editing of "End of an Era".... It does make it very difficult to watch, but all you have to do is close your eyes and let the music take you!!

Empu’s phrasings are amazing... he can shred when he wants but he can just sustain and vibrato just enough to make one note sound like 19 - makes it look effortless and easy.

Great Review. Always love how you catch things. This song is from the End of an Era DVD, the last concert on that tour and filmed in 2005. This is also the night that they gave Tarja the letter. If you watch the whole DVD, you can catch little things as the concert winds down. Brief pause, Emotion or looks to Tarja. The band knew what would be soon happening, and you can see the pain/emotion. Rock On!!

Nemo is the song that got me into Nightwish so it will always be special. At that time I thought of metal as mainly noise, so it was a quite gentle introduction, but boy have I learned since then :-)

Next song I recommend by Nightwish and Tarja is “Swanheart”, live; soulful and emotional vocals. In my opinion, trying to compare Tarja and Floor is absolutely nonsense; mostly is a matter of taste.

It sounds like a "song song" rather than a composition because Tuomas was intentionally trying to write a radio-friendly song. He said it was one of the hardest things he had to do because that's just not how he writes, but I guess he must have been pressured by the label. Still, he managed to come up with a great song that in fact opened a lot of doors for them.

The best thing about this song is the way it keeps evolving. I swear every live performance they put out is better than the last. Watch the Wacken 2013 version, then the 2015 versions (Wembley and Buenos Aires), then the 2018 Buenos Aires version to catch all the little differences and the embellishments Floor keeps adding to the ending. And don’t forget the Planet Rock acoustic version by Floor and Troy earlier this year.

Finally. the first Nightwish song i heard from a Metal Hammer magazine sample cd way back in the day. :)

Chase, you and I started down the Nightwish rabbit-hole at about the same time. I started there from collaborations with other bands I was listening to - Tarja with Within Temptation on "Paradise" and Marco with Delain on "The Gathering" (both worth a look...). This summer, maybe 90% of the music I've listened to or watched has been Nightwish, and it's been great to have such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide as yourself! Can't wait to see them live some time soon(ish). Hope you'll get the chance to react to "Alpenglow" (from Wembley) soon - it's a real feel-good song, as Floor herself says in her intro. "Nemo" is probably my favourite Tarja song (along with Sleeping Sun) but you should also look at the live and acoustic versions with Floor. Not necessarily better, just different. And please keep these reactions coming - they're a highlight of my Saturday mornings!

Chase......This one is special for me. First Nightwish song I and many North Americans ever heard. Was a hit in Brazil (?), then worked its way north. Makes me smile every time.

Tarja was and is a great singer in her own way and music, and I really love her newer stuff, while this is written especially to her voice and singing style. And it is cool to follow the Nightwish evolution from their start and up - and the evolution is still in progress, much faster than earlier. Nice and clean reaction Chase 👍👌🤘🤘

Nemo was the first song I heard from Nightwish. They had a performance on a TV show and I thought the combination of Tarja's voice and the metal music was brilliant. I bought the album "Once" the same day and after listening to it once 🙃, I ordered everything else Nightwish had released until then. And since then I love this band more than any other. Thanks for the review of "my" first Nightwish song!

Another good Tarja is "Over the Hills and Far Away". If you can find it, Annette's best performance was when they played the jazz festival at Montreaux.

They grew so much during the years. This is just a good song, but the recent versions are even better. Even acoustic it still stands!!!!.😊

man, the memories this song brings back... you're right on the money with the commercially viable comment, nemo was played *everywhere* in brazil back in 2004, even on those "top 10 of the day" type shows on mtv.

Nemo was my first love, what got me into Nightwish when I was just about 12 years old ages ago... Btw I'd love to see your analysis of Weak Fantasy, it's quite special.

I like Nemo, it is just a very well written song. Chase, if you want to see/hear how early Nightwish was like, check them out at Live Lista Chart TV 1999. It is good remastered quality that throws you back to the days when Nightwish were newcomers. And have a damn good day too.

This was one of the biggest singles from the album Once, last album with Tarja. It got a lot of radio play I assume (I dont know for sure since I was 11 years at that time lol) For Anette do Slow Love Slow, in that song she really shines. There's a good live in Montreaux Festival.

What a Saturday!!! ...it worth the wait...as always...

Fun fact: Floor did this acoustic in her 11th gig fronting NW at Orlando 2012. She also sang this with Troy in the same session that acoustic "How's the Heart". And this is quite different at Wacken 2013 with Troy doing his thing.

One of my favorite Tarja songs is: "The End of All Hope", there's a nice recording of it on KZfaq at the Breeze festival (2002). Also you could check out Floor's version of Nemo at Wacken 2013, to hear a different take on Nemo. I personally like it more because she adds vocals to the ending crescendo.

I dont mind just enjoying the the music but when it is songs that I have heard dozens of times I really respect when the person reacting to it can change the experience by bringing their knowledge or understanding so the video is not just about how good the music is( because I knew that already) but by going a little bit deeper. One of my favourites! I agree with you about the video production though. It's very early 2000s - feels dated and hard to watch. But the music is perfect. The music video for this one with Tarja was one of the very first Nightwish songs I ever heard. Simple, catchy and cinematic - I fell in love.

Everyone should recognize the very first keyboard note in this song because it is the song that made them big worldwide, their biggest hit back then. Take a listen to the album version or the video.

You have to see the videoclip, that's the love of my life. I fell completely in love the second after I saw it, since then they are my favorite band ever.

Thank you for reacting to Nemo. After it was released it was every where, in radios, tv, mtv... you name it. I was last weeks pregnant that time and my son sure had a lot of Nemo played to him before he was even born 😄

Tarja got fired less than 30 minutes later. Regarding the editing, it was the 90's. Someone thought this was cool back then. The dress: Tarja changed quite a few times during this show, and the mike changed to a matching colour. If I recall correctly, it was 6 outfits, but I may be forgetting one. Nemo is indeed one of their more mainstream and most successful songs. One of the things that Nightwish do, is that they record a song and then they go on a tour to perfect it. That is why they sound better live. The songs are getting tinkered with, simplified or flourished, with touches added throughout. It is interesting to see how this happens, and it is most profound in the songs that had a few years to mature. You may wish (for your own enjoyment) to check out more recent or older versions of the songs you react to, to spot the little differences and the effect they have. An example from the top of my mind is in Ghost Love Score, that final high note at the end, does not exist in the version of the song sung in this concert by Tarja. I really enjoyed your take on a song from this era, and I would encourage you to keep at it. There are a lot of iconic band-defining songs from the Tarja period, and I am sure you would be happy to check them out.

I love the acoustic version with Floor even more.

Just realised something: As you haven't done anything yet with Anette, there is one song with her that, composition wise, will be for you like opening of a box of candy: The Scaretale. Either the music video, or there is an official live version. The song is.... a bit special. I've seen some comments comparing it to watching Nightmare Before Christmas or The Beetlejuice. You'll see what I mean if you ever decide to react to it, or just watch it on your own 😊.
