Nightwish has an amazing cover of this one: “Walking in the Air" is a song written by Howard Blake for the 1982 animated film The Snowman based on Raymond Briggs' 1978 children's book of the same name.

This is from End of an Era concert where Dark Chest of Wonders were the opener song.

I hope you'd check out Beauty OF the Beast at some point! It's one of their older 'epic' songs that deserves to be right up there with the big 3 imo. But since there's no proper live version, it doesn't get nearly enough love.

Perhaps a song that Nightwish has covered? We all know that Tuomas is an amazing composer/song writer, but it would be interesting to see how he'd go about arranging a song written by someone else. I'd recommend Over the Hills and Far Away (Gary Moore) , The Phantom of the Opera (Andrew Lloyd Webber), High Hopes (Pink Floyd), or The Heart Asks Pleasure First (Michael Nyman).

Beauty of the beast from Century Child. By far one of their best compositions, but I think there's only audio. [edit] I did find live versions, but the video quality is not that great.

Great review! I agree with you on the keyboard solo section, but I would recommend you to check out this section on the album version where he uses a super awesome bells sound, which suits the song far better in my opinion.

This is one example of NW songs where I much prefer the studio version to the live. I don't know if it's the way this concert is mixed or if they changed something for this song, but on the album the part with the keyboard solo feels more... full (?? I'm not sure how to say this, I'm not a musician ??). And so the effect is less weird to the ear and more satisfying. I'm glad you're doing older songs too! Loved hearing and seeing Jukka drumming. He reminds me of a leopard, barely leashed with primal energy, literally chomping at the music! Kai's style is as good, just so different, a perfectly controlled, effortlessly powerful beast beating the drums at super speed. Both so, so good, great to watch, and hear, how they manage Tuomas's masterpieces. Rest of song also magical, just, as a UK-based ginger says, Nightwish doing Nightwish things. In another message I suggested the performance of "The phantom of the opera", recorded on the DVD End of an era. It is really iconic. However, the idea occurred to me to also suggest the performance of "Ghost love score" recorded on the DVD "End of an era". The original version of "Ghost love score" is quite different from the one you saw with Floor. As you like to explore the music as a whole, making observations about the instruments, the harmony, the rhythm etc., I think you will really like the original version. In the version with Tarja, the choirs, the orchestra and the presence of backing vocals recorded by Tarja are much stronger. After some time im here again asking for a reaction for Creek Mary's Blood. Yes, it have some controversy about John two-hawks and the native american part of the song, but is a beautiful song nonetheless and i think is alongside with Phantom of the Opera the pinacle of Tarja's performances with NW.

The songs of Nigtwish with tarja give me a physical effect, first I feel as if electricity is running through my spine, and then when tarja reaches the highest notes and holds them up, I feel that the spinal cord is disconnected at the height of shoulders for a fraction of a second. Is Amazing. Tuomas does seem to pick some really synthy samples when he does solos live, as opposed to how they are on the album. I suspect it's to stand out from the backing track, like "Nono, I am here, actually playing this." When touring with Annette, he actually played bits from "Stargazers" and "Gethsemane" as the solo here, easter egging songs that Annette wasn't going to sing.

The album version is different in that Tuomas bit you didn't love so much, think you should give it a try. About Tarja, if you really want to understand what makes her so special and her role in NW history and evolving you should go way back, check out Wishmaster, Oceanborn and Century Child specially. From Century Child on foward she changed her way of singing significantly, on Tuomas's demand. Maybe because he already knew she would be leaving at some point and realized that it would be hard to find a replacement for what she had done until then. I personally would suggest Kinslayer (about the Columbine massacre, make sure you pay attention to the lyrics), Fantasmic, Gethsemane (there's a live video from 1999, they're all babies), and my all time favorite NW song: Beauty of the Beast (studio version, with lyrics).
