yes, he was so unfair with drakes lyrical style, two chains and big sean. They were young men being braggadocious and it was in humor. i live that sound because all three have interesting flows and funny rhymes. you can imagine them sitting around the table talking crap about what they bought, the girls they have and just silly stuff.

Bob you gotta understand that some of these songs were so big IN THE TIME they were released. Started from the bottom was an anthem. People were just going around saying "started from the bottom now we here" for awhile. Along with other quotable. There's similar songs like this from artists in this early 2010s era (Big Sean, 2 Chains etc) that were huge anthems but if you heard them for first time now you wouldn't get it.

It's crazy how much being in the moment matters with music. It doesn't seem like it should matter that much, but it really does. And it sucks that is the one things I can never recreate with this channel :(

@@bobthepoppop Also it takes a lot of understanding from me who grew up with 2010s rap music with all my peers through middle school and high school and parties to step back and ask... is this even THAT good of a song, you feel me? We used to sing some of the cringey or over the top bragging lines because that's all we knew. Even in my college clubs these types of songs are considered "throwbacks" now and everyone turns up. If most of these songs dropped today they would probably be called mid or average Drake songs even though the fanbase praises because it was big 10 years ago as he was coming up. Sorry to add onto this long comment but the same can be said for the "emo trap soundcloud" era that featured artists like Lil Uzi Vert, XXXTentacion, Juice WRLD, Trippie Redd, Lil Peep etc now our generation doesnt mess with emo trap current day but they made "classics" songs for that era

Only cornballs were going around chanting that bullshit. Alot of people were clowning this dude because he never "started from the bottom". Somewhere Vanilla Ice is looking at Drake on the Internet with his fist clinched thinking "that was supposed to be me". Honestly im not even trying to be disrespectful to you, but this just proves my point of Drakes target audience. College kids that party in dorms and women. This is a pop album and it gets real annoying to real rap fans when this guy is running around claiming hes the GOAT or talking about any sort of a struggle, its completly inauthentic. I dont get how anyone can listen to Kendrick or Cole and then listen to this. Drake is like Iggy Azelia trying to sound "urban" on wax, but in real life he speaks like Urkel.

Sorry if i am repeating other comments, but in hip hop, the artists will talk to a general "enemy" or foe. They are not necessarily always speaking to a specific individual when they are talking their shit. It's usually referring to any other competitor in the rap game. That is not to say that sometimes the lines are directed towards specific people. Just dont get too hung up on who theyre referring to. It could be anyone in their genre

The thing with Drake, he's a child of rap (and r&b) music. What I mean by that is that his music is so full of references and if you are aware of those you get the full experience. For example, some production you dislike, and I'm thinking "yeah well if he was familiar with the Houston rap sound he would get this", and stuff like that. And there are a ton of moments like that in his music, he wears his influences on the sleeve. From Houston, to Wu-Tang, to Ma$e, to UK stuff later on. I know it's unfair to expect every listener to be aware of this, but I just wanted to point out hiw there are many layers to Drake (and 40's, 40 is a major factor since they've been friends for so long) music.

Bob, your analysis of Drake's music has actually been pretty enlightening. I'd throw his music on in the background in my younger years and generally speaking, it was unintrusive and easy to listen to. I don't enjoy his newer work and I couldn't really put my finger on why. But I found myself cringing at the same parts you were during your first listen here, and often your insight revealed parts about his music that I never gave much thought towards despite having listened to this album a shit ton. I'm glad you owned up to your resistance to be open minded with his previous albums and no, with this album, I don't think you were close-minded. You have preferences. Don't smother it just because of everyone else's opinion differs from yours. Thanks as always for the excellent content.

Bob I find it really interesting how sometimes my favorite part of a beat you’ll point out as being weird. The little background singing in “come on we’re going home” is great in my opinion. And I think you not liking it is the perfect example of why you don’t like Drake. Its all about restraint and buildup, and often with those kind of songs I hear you say there’s not a lot going on in the beat and you don’t understand why people like the song. Not as much with the piece of “come on, we’re going home” beat specifically, that piece in particular is not supposed to buildup tension, it’s supposed to be a little melancholy. Next time you find yourself in a scenario where your listening to something like that, I suggest you imagine yourself driving on a pitch black road in the middle of the night by yourself, your not trying to hype yourself up, or be chill, it’s supposed to be kinda introspective in a way that makes you listen to the lyrics and not even register what they are, even if your singing the whole song by heart. If that makes any sense at all, which it probably doesn’t.

I am so emotional listening to this as a pregnant lady who loves this album. On the songs where he is repetitive like worst behavior and started from the bottom, you have to realize, Bob… those are chants. You will repeat those chants during your success as a motivator … So Drake provides a confidence boost to his listeners. Those repetitive lyrics are very purposeful and necessary to enter into the cerebral climb to the top. You already are a very confident man who probably had confidence instilled at a young age, but for many, Drake gives that boost that someone may need. Just thought I had to write this so u can understand more. Chants also are very popular in African music where the same phrase is repeated and it mostly is a chant about the power of the people.

Also on Connect when he says "and I'd allow her, talk about pussy power" he wasn't saying he is allowing her to talk about feminism, he was admitting that he would allow her to just run all over his feelings and that is the power that pussy has over him, thats why at the end of the song he's still speeding to go see her as soon as she hits him up, basically he's whipped

For more context on where Drake is coming from with some of his more “boastful” lyrics, it could be worth digging into the history of Drake’s beefs, criticisms, controversies, etc. He was chastised by many within the rap community for being a soft “lightskin” who isn’t really “black enough” to be taken seriously as a rapper (he’s mixed with black and jewish, so really its a double whammy for attacks…) and it led to many notable incidents and circumstances (from being pissed on in a club by another rapper, to constantly fighting accusations of being a homosexual, and just generally receiving an inordinate amount of hate). When he is bragging and talking about his accomplishments, I get the sense he’s doing it with this general unfair treatment, and all of the people who unfairly counted him out or never gave him his flowers because of his mixed race background/upbringing and mannerisms, in mind. His entire career really feels like an effort to prove to the rap/hip hop community (which is primarily black) that he belongs.

@@activistbook3809 Yeah, idk if Drake the individual is “that deep,” (he seems rather introspective and thoughtful in his interviews, despite the bulk of his music not reflecting that) but the nuance surrounding how his public persona has been shaped (whether consciously or subconsciously) by the interplay between his position in the hip-hop community and the realities of his personal life and identity are certainly complicated and “deep.”

I feel like you are starting to understand a bit more why millions of people resonate with drake. All of us drake fans just appreciate the artist he is and how he brings you along on his journey. We're not necessarily trying to live his life through him but it's more like we are following him on his journey. And that's just like any artist you like. Some people just listen to music only for the music because it may sound good but some people also really like the artist and want to hear about what's going on in their lives. And Drake is so popular in that regard because he brings you on the journey while also making amazing music sonically at the same time. I love his slower songs because I can relate to those a bit more when he speaks on relationships and breakups. You said you don't like his braggadocious flexing songs but those kind of songs are just a necessity for someone in his position because being a rapper and artist is a competitive and everyone thinks they are the best. It's a bit like athletes, you just have to some swagger to yourself. And it sucks that Drake is a hip hop rapper because that's the community where he gets the most hate from because they can't seem to understand that he is an international artist and he makes music for multiple genres and demographics especially in his newer stuff. I personally love all of it because I just appreciate him and everything he's been through. Hopefully you will react to more stuff from him and you will see his evolution.

I think you have to understand that for him, a lot of people disrespected him by not giving him credit as a rapper. “He’s Canadian” "What struggles did he have when he was on TV?" "He obviously has money; he was an actor.” Etc., now he has to have this armor. In a show business where you can be hot today and cold tomorrow, meeting your idols who can become your rivals and friends turning into enemies is something that seems to be overlooked a lot.

Another thing to add is that most of us Drake fans grew up with him. He Burst onto the scene when he was really young, He dropped his first project in 2009 and I was 10 years old. Most of us grew up with him and watched him evolve into the artist he is today. I was a freshman in high school when this album dropped and while I agree and can say that it’s not the best album ever, or the best lyrically or production wise, it’ll still always be one of my favorites because of the memories attached to not only the album but to the artist. I can see why from an outside perspective it would be hard to get into him because you don’t have those memories attached. His music doesn’t necessarily transcend age groups like some of the other artists you’ve visited, like Outkast or Kanye. I feel like he has a certain demographic which is people around my age, Give or take a few years (I’m 24)

Your reading of the title is perfect. There was a hunger in early Drake's music as he tried to legitimize himself in wrap, this album did that and Nothing Was The Same. Drake had the position he wanted, but he also wanted to prove he was an MC. You see that on Poundcake he wants to show his skills, but it didn't really matter anymore. At this point Drake had become so popular that he was turned into a stream generating machine. Making bloated albums and stuffing them in playlists, ads, or whatever. Pop songs left and right topping the charts, that old hungry Draks died here. But that insecurity you spotted did not go anywhere. He is still deeply concerned with how others perceive him, even if those people are completely irrelevant to his life at this point. He is on a campiagn to convince us he's not a dork, but in doing so he reveals himself as even more of a dork.

For me whenever artists get on this, what i like to call "braggadocious" style of music, basically songs where they boast about how great they are, money, hoes, etc. I kinda learned to disconnect all of that from the actual artist, i look at it as a sort of persona they put on, a type of show in a way, it doesn't mean that they mean all of what they are saying if anything at all actually, it just something that sounds cool, and i think it's the same case with drake. i think it's essential to do that distinction to enjoy artist like drake or other rappers because they then will appear as hypocrites in their own albums, for the same reason some songs will have him say that his the goat and untouchable, but later songs saying his sad because a girl broke their heart, or depressed, doesn't really add up does it.

I think Jay's verse is rapped really well- probably my favorite of his on a Drake song, but he always takes a specific tone to match Drake's general vibe; I will say that a lot of the second verse is reflection on broken relationships (professionally/friendships) throughout his career, from Drake's general idc but I really care tone so unless the names mentioned mean anything to you, they're meaningless references. The cake part is memed frequently tho like his verse Monster, which makes the lesson he should stop listing things on songs like that.

I think the whole idea that encompasses this album and Drake as an artist and person as a whole is the track "Furthest Thing". Through the course of the album (and as you can find throughout a lot of his discography) he talks about his life and how he is. You can tell that he has problems with being hypocritical, caring too much about others opinions, toxic, and petty. It all comes together with the song "Furthest Thing", he comes clean, and admits that he is the furthest thing from perfect, like everyone just he knows. P.S: Both songs Wu-Tang Forever and Own It serve as two meanings, not just talking about a girl but the music game; "And nowadays when I ask about who got it, they say it's yours..."

Also im sure someone has mentioned it but at lot of Drakes appeal is how relatable his music used to be. He talked about his interpretation on topics such as relationships, chasing success, dealing with negative people and events in lives, etc. with such honesty that the listener can relate to what hes saying. In his earlier projects he didn't rap constantly about his money and fame. It immerses the listener more and makes us feel like hes one of us. Not anymore of course.

Drakes popularity I feel like was all about the timing when he came on the scene , back in 06-09 lil Wayne was on top of the world , he was the hottest rapper out there, with this mixtape era and more. Then he winged in Nikki and drake around that time and drake just became an instant star running with “young money” he had amazing features and he was a whole different sound to the music back then , with the sound. R&B singing for the ladies and some bars for the dudes. (For me I was in my early 20s back then, went going though my first heart break) some of the music tailored a lot to those feelings so drake was a vibe then. Hence the joke “don’t drake and drive you’ll end up at your ex’s house) but he continued the momentum he built thru the years and became rapper of the decade from 2010-2020. It’s hard to not remember a year within that timeframe where a drake banger solidifies itself into a moment of time through out those years

When Drake says, ‘run over my feelings in an 18-wheeler and I allow it,' he's not actually talking about 'pussy power.' It's more about him allowing someone to take advantage of his emotions because he’s pussy whipped, not a reference to empowerment. Just wanted to clarify that point. Great video!
