In this video, I react to some of the trends that I see other online publications reporting on. I go over the trending lists from Vogue, Insider, Good Housekeeping and Insider to see what they think are the big interior design trends of 2023. To me, this just goes to show that so many of these trends are subjective, so take them all in as ideas and create a home you love!

I love the blue! 'course I'm partial. I started reno a couple years ago and tried the gray walls. Hated EVRRY swatch. My kid picked out a green/blue for his room. Out of desperation I tried it and it worked perfectly in the living room. Never looked back.

Wellness rooms and traditional are trends I am happy about. I would also include music rooms, but I think these could be combined with a wellness room and be multifunctional as homes are getting smaller for the average American anyway. Elsewhere I am pretty sure housing costs have skyrocketed too so I believe they have smaller spaces too... Personally I love pulling out the old vinyl records every now and then... They do have wonderful sound and kicking back with some music a few drinks and friends is nice... 😊 Happy for you that your Art Deco is on trend again... Happy New Year's!! 😊🍾🎉

So fun fact, the condo association where I live ripped out a bunch of beautiful old massive trees becauseeee..... The trees were out of style and they needed to plant new ones. The landscaping company was run by someone's cousin it turns out. It was really disgusting to witness. They also tore out hydrangeas and planted.... hydrangeas. -_-

I think the 'listening room' and 'wellness room' are just new names for that one room that is an extra. Den, library, computer room (not that long ago), media room, gaming room, gym, it's that one room that's switched out according to the family's current needs. They just came up with more interesting labels for them.

I get the thought process behind it. My “rich-rich” fantasy is to have one room in my house that I can throw design to the wind and make a hockey room. Giant TV, team colors, comfy seating, tons of memorabilia… in my minds eye it’s hideously tacky and I’d love every inch of it. But while I live in an apartment, I’ll settle for jerseys in the closet. 😂
@Chaotic_Pixie
@Chaotic_Pixie Жыл бұрын
I just made a similar comment but I think they're way more than that "one extra room" and instead they're sanity spaces. They're more than the den or rec room or man cave or she shed. They're purpose built and well-appointed within the budget. They may be a whole room but they may also be a niche carved from a larger room. It's all about balance and boundaries in all aspects of life.

I think the biggest “trend”that is coming in with everyone understanding the importance of their homes atmosphere - is not doing what’s trending and just picking colours and items that they genuinely love and creating their safe space. People are aiming to enjoy their spaces as theirs again I think

You would not believe the crumbs and sticky messes that are hidden by the visual texture 😅 Some of these trending granites are more reflective whether they're white or black or just have more solid color areas which expose any dirtiness. Same! I have white cabinets but a lot of darker greys, sage/olive, silvers, but I keep it dark. We never open the curtains so it doesn’t have that same vibe as all of these other bright white rooms. BUT, I have decided to bring in a lot of black- adding in black fixtures, and some other other pieces. I think it’ll be a good mix. I think the listening room thought should have been listed as an example of what I've been calling "sanity spaces". That could be a listening room, a craft room, a library room... or a niche carved out of a larger space dedicated to the hobby you love most that brings you inner peace. So that could also be a home gym or a gaming space. And for many I know, its a solarium/3 seasons porch where they house many of their houseplants and enjoy taking care of them. I think one of the major things the pandemic and most importantly, the lockdown, is that its important to have balance and boundaries and part of that is making sure you can dedicate time to doing what you love, not just what you do to earn money (even if you love your job). There's definitely a shift away from "man caves" and "she sheds" to hobby dedicated spaces where you can pursue something that fills your soul and makes your brain happy. In the same vein, I think this is why we're seeing so many bathroom and kitchen renovations as those who enjoy cooking/baking or pampering themselves as their sanity saver want spaces they truly enjoy and function well too.

I painted my apartment turquoise blue in 2010 and I still love it. When people come in, the shock quickly wears off and invariably they say they feel uplifted which is what I want to feel in my home - uplifted and inspired. Blue for me will never go out of style, including the bold blue you featured. The biophilic trend I love - you can never have too many plants or too many planters, IMO. Dark moody interiors have long been a favourite of mine. I remember seeing a photo of a black room for the first time in 2003 and thinking that as much as I loved it, people would not cotton to it but they did and I'm happy about that. Black countertops are like glossy black floors - beautiful and glamorous bu only if you have the resources to have someone clean them for you on a weekly basis. Recently I have seen textured walls in a different context than you discussed and loved it! It is more like an art installation. Today I saw photos of flowering dogwood branches styled like Chinoiserie as texture on a wall. Gorgeous! I want it! I do love that textured walls are becoming much more creative than just the troweling of plaster. I hope we see more of what I am seeing in textured walls. Thanks Nick, I enjoyed this video very much! Happy New Year!

Art Deco has been a trend in the UK since 2020 (at least). Series 2 of Interior Design Masters had a contestant - Siobhan - who's home was a 1930s original, and she'd kitted it out in a glamorous, maximalist art deco style. The show was on air in early 2021, and filmed during the latter half of 2020 - her style wasn't presented as being eccentric or niche, so I think it was pretty firmly already a part of UK trends by then.

I think trends are fun to watch to maybe be inspired for new ideas, but I'm a firm believer in creating a space that is right for you. I've personally started watching Nick's channel because my wife and I are hoping to move in the not-so-distant future, and while we'd bring most of our own stuff with us, because we like it, we're not looking to just recreate what we already have. And I would say that people have been interior designing before people were calling it interior design. Much of the time it was more of the, I like what I know and know what I like "trend". Which it still pretty much is for most people. The social "elite" have the money to hire designers to find styles that they like that will also make an impression on those who come to their homes. And in the last 60-70 years there's been a growing trend for the rest of us to try to emulate that. (See Nick when he talks "pricepoints") So much of society is worried about the keeping up with the Jones', and picking apart everyone who isn't up-to-date with design, cars, tech, etc; sometimes it can seem like people are more worried about that than being happy and comfortable with what they have. Sorry this became more of a tirade. But something I've heard Nick speak to often is to make your space about you. You want that mid-century mixed with traditional mixed with farmhouse mixed with glam? Than do it, if others don't like it, too bad for them, you're the one who has to live there!

Dark kitchen countertops ... my fantasy countertop is soapstone, the type you see in university chem labs. Yes, it's dark, yes, it shows crumbs and stains - but it's intended to look well used, not pristine. To my taste, a few stains adds to the look. I would not go with dark glossy countertops; they're as bad as shiny white. Years back, when concrete counters were a new trend, I saw one d-i-y project where the concrete was finished by using coffee as a surface stain (like wood stain). The final color was quite nice, and spilled coffee was no problem. 😄 ☕

I guess by total happenstance I'm trendy 😀 I inherited my childhood home that was built in 1940. And all the furniture. I have plaster walls because that's what they did in 1940. I have a lovely arch between living room and dining room. Lots of traditional mahogany furniture and guest bedroom and Florida room with mid century modern furniture. Some marble mostly on furniture and whatever you call the things on the floor under doors (?). I'm mixing my modern taste with the traditional. I'm loving all of it and I'm incredibly grateful.

I recently moved into a house with black granite counters that have a glittery/sparkly effect, which is the worst of both worlds. The glitter disguises crumbs and bits of food so it's hard to know where to clean, but it also sometimes looks like crumbs itself. So it's either messy and you don't know it, or not messy but feels like it is.

The problem with trends is that designers come up with new ideas each year and if you follow trends instead of finding out what YOU like, you'll be chasing other's ideas forever. Costly mistake. Look and listen, then decide what works for you for the long haul and ignore the trends.

Hey Nick, I’m with you on listening rooms. That’s something that people who are not musicians. We built on top of our home 27 years ago to relocate a recording studio and a teaching studio so we could put ourselves in lockdown working and living in the one space. This was so we could be with our daughters through the hectic growing years. Best thing we ever did. The recording space was never used to listen to music. By the time our day was one we could hardly wait to get down stairs to the quiet. Gentle music, classical, that didn’t relate to Film and Screen was played, rarely. We had a peaceful home the girls new there were rules. No running, steaming or crying upstairs. Yes they learned self control and how you didn’t have to blast the neighbours in order to LISTEN to your favourite bands. Our friends son has a listening room and we politely sat there after lunch listening to music, at volume. I think he thought we’d be impressed. We could hardly wait to get out of there 😂 As you say if it’s your thing, do it. Just not near me!!!!! PLEASE 😊

0:36 I’ve had a “listening room” in my home for 8 years. We call it the lounge. Really it’s just a bedroom on the 2nd floor with all of our records, a sofa, and some chairs on one side, desk on opposite wall. We use it as a wfh office, listening room, smoking room, and cocktail spot. Some formal living rooms/parlors serve the same purpose. I think the main theme is that there is no tv. Your media is music.

I come from an Indian household and as much as I wanted to get a white countertop for my recent kitchen reno, I finally chose a jet black granite..why..cuz we use turmeric, curry powder, lots of spices in our food and chances of them staining a light colored countertop no matter what the material is really high..sure black shows dust n crumbs more easily but it's just a matter of cleaning more and it's clean again versus a light colored countertop that overtime starts looking dingy and dull and stained and spotted and discolored, there's no amount of frequent cleaning that will remedy that

Whatever happened to a stereo system that you could listen throughout your house? Especially with all the smart gadgets you could turn off speakers in one room and leave another room on. Is it necessary to just sit there and listen unless in fact, you are a musician. Then there's the headphones but, it's not the same thing to an old person like myself. Got to say I love traditional although my first love is Victorian. I think traditional allows you to have those keepsakes that means so much that so many people just toss because they're not on trend. To me, and this is personal, when I see my mother's dishware or my grandmother's silver it gives me a feeling of warmth and home. Everything my father ever fixed in my home does the same thing and it's not decor! We don't appreciate all they do and all they were until they're gone. Even if we think we do. There's so much more to each person in our lives and so much more when we inherit their Treasures and learn more about what they loved.
