I think the concept of traditional floor plan is in flux. What we think of traditional today isn’t what was traditional 100 years ago, and I don’t expect todays standard to be the same 100 years from now. That said, I think we are going to see a trend towards a modified open concept (some closed off spaces) which will become the new traditional.

I think the worst aspect of having open shelving in kitchens is that the items on the shelves become very dusty and require washing before use.

So,I actually am a psychologist and I completely agree about the kids’ rooms. I remember painting my young sons’ room in sky blue with blue fluffy clouds. No way I’d do that anywhere else in the house. And post divorce when they were tweens, I took them shopping and let them choose wall color, bedding, rugs, lamps, everything. It was bright and colorful, not my style at all. But it was so them. Childhood is a time of so little control, why not let kids decorate their space to suit themselves?

"Let kids have their color!" Absolutely spot on! Stimulate their imaginations, not boredom. Regardless of what they have, when they hit puberty, they will want it GONE. Let them have color!

Haha, I think I ruined my son’s teen angst by not only letting him have black walls, but I actually painted them for him! It was flat black with cream colored trim, and light ash floors. It actually looked really cool, and the room has two nearly full length windows, so plenty of natural light. Obviously he moved on to other ways to rebel.😸

As a kid I intentionally chose a colour I figured angsty teenage me would also like 😅 and I was right. It was a deep dark blue called "dingle blue", discontinued I think

@@lacee7494 And if the doors get off track or have any other problem you might have to go through sheetrock to fix it. My grandmother’s house had a beautiful carved pair of sliding doors between her parlor & dining room, and that’s what happened. But I do love the look, they’re beautiful.

Really appreciate how you mention that a lot of these trends are fun things for super rich people but not for average people for whom décor is a more long-term investment. Also, the notion that people are trying to box their kids into their style aesthetic is a great point. Everytime I see a nursery painted with grey everything and almost no bright colours it makes me sad.

I like Sophie Pateson’s approach to a child’s room. She designs it for the child to grow in, acknowledging that it’s an investment, and most people aren’t going to be repainting & re-doing a child’s room every 2 years as they get older.

I don't mind it. Bright colors are for places you want lots of activity and running around. An all grey children's bedroom maynot be trendy, but it's an appropriately boring choice for a sleeping space. Now a beige playroom on the other hand..

The modern perspective in this is... Well, a completely modern, fabricated perspective. In a middle class household in the 70s, there was no "decorating" children's rooms. We had curtains and blankets. So the idea that we could stifle children's creativity by decorating their rooms in the wrong colour is, I think, a little over the top. Most kids likely don't care; they think about it because we ask them to. Otherwise?

@@MyFocusVaries I agree for when they are infants, but I remember when my kids were children in the 70's they had to share a room. We rented back then so weren't able to paint the walls, but I would add visual interest by adding colored mobiles and wall decor because children really love color. My daughter especially loved looking at and adding to the design😁. It was neat, but bright and colorful. Yellow gingham was the main color.

@@bather7483 A lot of people don't have the space for a dedicated playroom, so the kids bedroom has to serve that function. I think the comments hating on neutral-colored nurseries/kids rooms are mostly focused on ppl who don't have fun colors/decor anywhere else in the home either

You are honest, straightforward and you try to look a things from perspectives different from your own: these are some skills that would make the difference!

I too have a huge “out dated” clock in my home. My husband made it for me and added a subtle “you and me since 2010” that no one would know was there unless they looked closely. I’ll never take it down.

19:20 I am the youngest of four siblings, and one of the memories I treasure the most is that our room was big enough for everyone to have their own space, when we still shared the same room. Our parents gave us a box of chalk in assorted colors and told us that each of us couldhave one of the walls of the room, and that we could draw whatever we wanted. I still remember today the train that my brother drew, the hot air balloon with rainbow colors that I made, the green dragon that my other brother drew, and the flowered balcony that my sister drew. Letting children make decisions about their own spaces helps them build personality and confidence.

@@debbielockhart7762my kitchen is pretty cluttered, because I can be messy. But those totally clear counters just say nobody cooks up in here! I currently keep my flour and sugar canisters inside a cabinet, and even that is inconvenient. If I was baking bread every day I would put them out on top of the cabinet!

I bought a house form the 1920s that's updated, but kept most of the walls and craftsman moldings and trim intact. It has a lot of character, distinct rooms (entry room, living room, dining room, kitchen - all separated by walls with big door frames that probably held French doors at some point). I haven't lived in a closed off house like this since I was a very young, and I love it. It's much quieter, your kitchen can be a bit messy without it constantly being in your periphery, and you get to design multiple rooms with multiple colors or design themes. I think smaller, focused rooms feel more cozy, and give a lot more opportunity for customization like more wall art, or having furniture against the walls (without it feeling like a Victorian ballroom).

@@stefs3460 it is beautiful, thanks lol! I'm still working on each room piece by piece, but I'm having fun working out how to design each area. I think I'd be a little overwhelmed if this whole first floor had been renovated to open concept (as many other old houses in my area have been, unfortunately). I guess I just like the structure of walls and set spaces. I have a lot of respect for people who can figure out how to decorate open concept floorplans!

I like the open concept, but I've found I want to have an additional formal dining room. I'm a messy cook. Even if I only use it for special occasions, I love using my dining room. I don't want myself and my guests looking at a sink full of pots and pans while we eat Thanksgiving dinner. I feel much calmer having a chance to escape from all the mess I'm about to clean up for the next three hours.

My parents let me paint my room walls (yes, I had to help) the following colors, in chronological order: pepto bismal pink; red, white, and blue; BRIGHT yellow, dark purple, and Kelly green. I regretted every single one of them eventually, but I'm forever grateful they let me do my thing. 😂

A hybrid floor plan absolutely makes sense. As someone who grew up in a 1950s ranch with a kitchen walled off from the rest of the home to buying my first home in which the main floor was completely open, I want my next home to be a combination.

I agree. I used to have an open floor plan house, and not being a neat kitchen person, I hated it. I always wanted to close off the LR/DR from the kitchen. The people who bought the house did just that, and adds cabinet space and a pretty archway.

My daughter’s house is a hybrid and it is perfect. She has teens and their family can all congregate around the kitchen that is open to the family room area, casual eating and a pool/ping pong table and TV. It is big enough that people aren’t bumping into each other. The living room and dining room are separated from all that activity so there is a place for the adults to visit and no TV in there. I live in a small house that looks out on water and would love to remove the wall that divides kitchen and living room but I can’t afford to loose my cabinets. My house is small enough that everyone is still close when I entertain - otherwise I am the only one here except for my pooch.

I have all my mothers antique furniture and all the antique furniture that l bought with my husband ! I lost them both, and having it around me makes me happy. I can still remember when and where me and Mike bought every piece. It warms me!

My entire house is either inherited pieces or second hand. I remember almost every person I bought an item from that is displayed in my home. Some are thrifted…some were found on the curb. I remember adding up how much I spent on furnishing my home and it was under $1000. It took me twenty years to get it where I like and I’ll admit I need to edit. I found fabulous MCM pieces because they were beautiful and well maintained by the original owner way before it was trendy. Some were orphaned on the curb…

I hate open concept. I want a large chef's kicken with industrial venting. I don't want my home to smell like a restaurant. Please bring back thick heavy grand pocket doors to close off public rooms.

I like the modern organic look. It is serene and peaceful. Plus, if you want to change your colors (permanently or seasonally) then you do not have to replace a lot of items. I also like warm greige. I have always picked that color so that I could enjoy my beige/brown colors and there was enough grey in it to keep the room from looking like 1990's beige. The greys that they have been promoting the last 10+ years have been very cold feeling.

I agree about the kids rooms not being confined to the neutral color palette! No kids yet, but when I was growing up, I had the “blue room,” and eventually the room with a burgundy/cranberry accent wall when I entered my teenage years. I remember it being a lot of fun for me as a kid, picking paint colors, and coming up with a "design" for the room…. And that’s something I continue to have fun with in adulthood as my husband and I are finally getting around to painting/decorating and making our home our own lol

When my son was in his teens he wanted purple walls and carpet..we had to talk about it..I asked him to pick out ant carpet that wasn't purple..he picked out royal blue and brown swirl..I said ok and we installed it for him..

Re: open concept, remember Mary's kitchen in the old Mary Tyler Moore show? It had a swinging door and a large pass-through with a pull-down stained glass door. She could have the doors open and chat with guests while cooking, then close everything off at mealtime to hide the mess. It was perfect! I would love to see designers incorporate pass-throughs and swinging/pocket/folding doors in kitchens so they could go open or closed as needed.

I loved that little apartment and especially the kitchen. I always thought that was a great option. I've seen tiny cabins being rented out that have something like that going outside. Very useful but also a nice extra of incorporating inside and outside. Of course there's the occasional unwanted guest if you leave it open but chasing out chipmunks helps burn calories so I say why not?

Our home has a pass through window between the kitchen and living room and it's the best. It allows whomever's cooking still chat with whomever's in the living room while still having everyone out of the kitchen so they can work, makes it super easy to pass over a cup of water to someone sitting on the couch, and doubles the amount of natural light in both rooms.

I've always been a big fan of the traditional floor plan, so I'll be glad to see open plan not be the only option available. Even living alone, it's nice to get a change of scenery through the day. Living with people, separate rooms are an essential, lol.

I don’t EVER want to be stuck in the kitchen by myself while people are gathering in the other room. It makes me feel like the hired help who just churns out food. I love my open floor plan because it allows everyone to relax around the kitchen with me.

I prefer having a separate kitchen, it allows me to focus on cooking without distractions! I do have a sort of 'open plan' dining and living area and I love that because it's great for entertaining, when friends come over we can play board games at the dining table, then move over to the sofas to watch some tv while we eat pizza which I cooked up in the separate kitchen (which means no steam, smoke, or mess in the room that everyone is relaxing in!)

I have never heard of that "blobby" trend.. I guess we skipped that one here in Scandinavia.. Hope we are just not late on the trend, i dont want it ever! :) Just my taste, if anyone loves it, fine but no thank you! Also the organic trend has never left or will never leave over here, its been along like always :)

Regarding open concept everything, with Europe energy crisis I couldn't be happier to have sectioned off rooms. I can't imagine the bill if I had to heat huge spaces all the time. For me it makes sense for similar areas like a kitchen and dining space to be together, but for a living room where you sit down and your body cools down, it requires a different temperature and it's no sustainable if you have the couch in the middle of a dining and kitchen space to heat all the space not in use as well.

Absolutely. I have a mid size kitchen with a table thats the only room I heat all morning and early afternoon and I am happy not to have to heat the living/dining/office room as well.

I was a nanny for a family who had a large open concept home. During the winter, it was always freezing in there. They keep the temperature at 62 degrees! Once I turned the thermostat up to 68 & the children said their dad would be mad at me for turning it up. I did it anyway. I was sick of suffering in their home.

I don´t mean to be rude, but in our home, temperatures in winter are between 10°C to 15°C (only exception is bathrooms which are warmer) and we like it that way. If I visit my mom´s place I continuously sweat because she heats it up to 20°C+ but I´m not entitled to her turning the heat down for me since it´s her space/her home. I would have been mad as well, that´s so disrespectful.

@@hannahreynolds7611 okay, I didn´t consider that live-in-nannys exist somewhere on this planet. I would assume it´s just her workplace and she comes home to her own place after her shifts. However even if she was a live-in nanny to a rich family, she can just turn the heat up in her own rooms/quarter of the house. The rest is none of her business.

@@wolfsmaid6815 Depending on the country that nanny is in - and the state of workers rights there- there are often minimal temperatures that have to be in the workspace. It was and is a hot topic the whole fall and winter in Europe in the media and it so may be actually her business.

I started calling it suicide grey. There’s nothing high end about me so by the time it made it to the Walmart crowd it was just. So. Sad. I’m a fan of color. If I get free reign, I’m likely to make an entire house look like his idea of a kid room, but dang it, I like blues and greens and even the right purple. Why does the entire place have to be so safe when paint color is literally the easiest thing in a house to change.

I think some people are confused on open concept. Here in Texas you have a huge open space called the great room where everything flows in space with no walls between. Then you have a semi open where you can see into the kitchen from the family room and breakfast room. That’s my preference. I like have “some” separation because I don’t clean my dishes immediately after cooking and don’t like seeing my mess from my couch. I’ll get to it when I get to it 😂

I also live in Texas and have a great room. It is awesome to have so much open space that I can cook and still chat with my kids when they were doing homework at the kitchen table or “listen” in when the kids were upstairs in the game room which is right over the kitchen and open. Funnily enough, we lived in Farnborough, UK for 4 years and while I missed the big open space, the closed rooms there were welcoming and felt cozy. We also spend a lot of time outdoors so our patio is an extension of our house u til the summer when it’s too mot to be outside, and we thank God for air conditioning. Cheers!

To a great degree, the minimalist kitchen trend is an upper class affectation predicated on having domestic help. This trend resembles the function of a state bedroom in an 18th century European palace; it was a space conveying status rather than function (usually, a functional bedroom abutted the state bedroom). In fact, some upper class homes have two kitchens, one for staff, ie, the functional food prep space and one for the family and their guests, which functions more like a reception room.

I am not rich but prefer my counters to be clutter free. My airfryer fits in a cabinet and all utensils are but up in a drawer. Stuff just stresses me out.

On the other hand, a kitchen full of every appliance is a capitalist trap. Noone needs 2 airfryers, a microwave and a toaster oven on the counter. I have the kettle on my counter, only as a concession to my husband. I would prefer nothing. For me, minimalism is a lifestyle, not an affectation not an aesthetic choice. I have only the tools I need, so I have room to store them inside cupboards and don't need to store them on my countertop.

@@MyFocusVaries it's a privilege because not everyone can have a pantry or extra space to put needed things. I know you say if you can't afford the things, then you wouldn't have them in the first place to put away, but simple things like toasters etc. May not be able to be placed out of sight because of space requirements. Remember toaster covers and blender covers etc.? They wouldn't be necessary if there was a pantry.

A stylist I know told me there are trends, and then there are fads. You can indulge in a fad, but don’t spend too much because it will be over in the blink of an eye. Trends have a shelf life, so you can invest in them more. The trick is figuring out which is which. She was talking about apparel, but I always hear her in my head when I’m shopping for anything, not just clothes.

That's so true. If there is a trending style and color fad, you pick one or the other. Either get the fad structure in a neutral color, or a staple piece in a fad color, not both.

I think open concept works for smaller square foot spaces, and in a massive house each room should be distinct to prevent spaces from feeling cold and echoing. I just only imagine smaller spaces for me, and then open concept works very well (Sightlines through the living/kitchen/dining areas, make at least one actually large room). Just section of an office if you are working from home lol.

Agreed on the kids room. I let all of my kids pick out their room color schemes. My oldest went with purple walls, light purple trim and dark purple accent. My middle wanted green, blue and red, and my youngest got pink, yellow and white. All garish, and they all love them.

I think the grey trend is very sad. When my father died, I couldn't stand color for about a year. I only wanted to look at white & grey interiors. It's weird how you're attracted to different colors depending on your state of mind.

I bought my house in 2015. Interior design sites were saying open floor plan was going out and, yet, our realtor was *shocked* that I didn't want an open floor plan. In 2019, I hired an interior designer who was similarly shocked when I wanted to add walls. Now, it's 2023 and people are still saying open floor plan is going out. But I agree with Nick. Too many kids who were raised in open floor plans are parents now and don't know how to do it any other way.

I think that one of the things I love most about your channel is that you always make allowances for people owning their choices and preferences- like your pendant light and clock. Sometimes we fall in love with items that are on trend at a particular time, and don’t want to ditch them when they go “out”. I also think that it’s interesting how fashion and interior design have a delay between designers and “regular” people getting the memo. I’ve been hearing from designers for a while now that buclé type fabrics are on the way out, but only just now are emails and ads trickling down to me, pushing me towards purchasing those specific items. I have seen them for quite some time in an abstract mood board, aspirational sort of way, but not in the practical here’s-something-in-an-obtainable-item sort of way. Which is why they are flying off the shelves. We have finally gotten used to seeing them and are ready to pull the trigger before we realize that all the people in the know just got sick of them. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 Mostly I just wanted to thank you for putting so many things into words that I have been feeling, but haven’t understood why! I so enjoy all your content…

I agree with you on most of these. I have a 1940s built brick bungalow and I love that I have a kitchen I can close off. I don't like open shelves in kitchens because they and everything on them quickly get dusty and greasy. I have joyfully banished the TV from my living room. I still occasionally watch TV. My TV is now in the more private Florida room in the back of my house. What I agree with you on the most is if you love it have it in your home. Btw, I love your caged industrial light.

A flooring guy I know told me 2 years ago that people who are buying to flip a house, buy grey. People who are buying for their own home and want it to last, don't buy grey. I've been anxiously awaiting grey's demise, and am very happy to see that it's finally gone from model homes, so I take that as a good sign.

I used to think open floor plans meant that the kitchen opened to other spaces. But now it seems like main floors on 2-story homes are just an empty floor with a kitchen on the side. It seems almost like a basement. I like openness. But I don’t like feeling I’m getting ripped off by a builder.

I rarely buy or decorate with any current new thing, I only will go with things that I really love, ( which runs in the art nouveau and deco styles) whether it’s on trend or not because like most people I can’t afford, nor have the desire to constantly be keeping up with all that.

I agree and I too love the art nouveau and arts and crafts period design. I think some of it has tried to morph into the "modern organic", but I have always loved the design aspect of these periods and how nature with its organic lines, textures and warmer colors were incorporated in homes. I think we all tend to decorate our homes based on the time period we most identify. Personally, the art nouveau and arts and crafts period have always had a strong connection for me....perhaps another life. :)

I watch and enjoy these videos while sitting in my home office which hasn't had the horrid wallpaper changed in 30 years. I love how reasonable you are with everything. Some of the designers on TV make it seem like the world is ending if someone has a TV or a ceiling fan. Sorry if those seem bougie but this is the real world here.

I was very intentional with how I set up my house in 2021. I put the piano in the living room and the TV in a separate “TV room” (basically just another bedroom). I didn’t even care about style, I just want the focus of the home to not be the TV.

I loved it when our tv was in the computer/rec room. I hate when we visit my husband's family or have them over and the tv is always on in the background. I've shut it off as they've arrived only to have it put on again. Trying to talk over it is impossible and having someone interrupt to point out something on it is disruptive and upsetting. If they were coming to watch something that would be different but commenting on a show while opening Christmas gifts isn't my thing. Why bother getting together? Just stay home and watch it instead.

I have a small , beautiful solid wood wall unit w/ doors for my tv ; when company pulls into the driveway , I turn the tv off & shut the doors ! Nice to relax & enjoy a friendly conversation . ( Same w/ my phone - I will not answer it in the middle of a visit . Just plain old fashioned good manners .) 💙

THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER: Most of my design clients have been requesting that there be a separate space for the TV… not above the fireplace. They’re tired of having to look up so high on the wall to watch TV. It’s uncomfortable. That being said, semi open concept layouts are perfect for this. In open concept living, you generally have a fireplace wall & a wall of windows and/or exterior doors. If you install a partition wall perpendicular to your fireplace wall and put your TV there, that allows you to face your furniture toward the fireplace but still view the TV without having to move. In many of my designs, the dining space is open to the living area, but the kitchen is tucked behind a partition wall. That would also mean that the kitchen is open to the dining space. Love your videos, Nick! Keep it up!

I always lived a staged life since I got out of my mothers messy chaotic house. I grew up in a neighborhood where the tiny row houses looked like doll houses. I always swore when I have my own homes I would have a place where I would not be ashamed if someone came by. Kitchen always perfection. I cooked homemade Italian meals and did all my own baking. But I cleaned everything like crazy. Neighbors would ask if they can take their Christmas pictures in front of my fireplace. My poor children.! They are grown now and live in “normal” houses and they get frustrated that their partners are messy. In any event I don’t have a TV, my walls are greige, I live in an apartment now so I can’t paint. My counters are still spotless and I now have modern organic furniture. So I guess I am way out of style but I like it. Hugs xoxo

Yes! Let a kid be a kid! That's one of the mantras that we have at my job as a photographer. It is so important for kids to feel like they are individuals and they are able to express themselves.

Can I just say that going strictly streaming is a game changer? I recently got rid of cable, and with that all 3 of my televisions. I never realized how much they negatively impacted my space! They generate SO much dust, and their large black surfaces were like a black hole absorbing all the light around them. With those removed I now have a lighter, brighter space and it’s truly impacted my design style. Love your YT videos and your concise and fun delivery~

I agree that open concept has some unpractical aspects to it. But I will always love it. The open, airy feeling makes me energised. I have lived both in open concept homes and homes with small closed-off rooms and the latter made me depressed and less active. There are certainly ways to compromise though.

Totally agree. Can you imagine having to go thru puberty in an open concept house? And I'm talking about as a parent. As a kid the last thing I would have needed is to be within sight at all times of what my therapist calls "that endearingly overly-present parent of yours."

I loved this one, probably because I largely agree with you. And the clock and cage light seem to fit your personality and style. Can you imagine how boring we would be without such preferences and idiosyncrasies? I am happy gray is moving out because I personally find it depressing in home decor, so it’ll be nice to have some warm and colorful options more readily available for purchase.

Boucle: How does anyone with kids or pets manage to keep a white boucle couch? Acrylic: I *loved* it when my space was very post-modern (pop art, cubist, and brutalist), but it doesn't stay looking good. It gets cloudy and looks aged quickly.

Oh, I still love some open shelving. It’s obviously not going to be the best fit for everyone or in every room that needs storage, but I’ve always looked at it as impetus to cull the things that I really *do not* need or do not value, and perhaps thoughtfully replace things that I find more beautiful, and as a push to let go of fixating on a Pinterest Standard set up, instead embracing what occurs more organically and is true to my lifestyle preferences and personality.

I think the word "trend" is interesting. I had a white kitchen (the walls were sunflower yellow) with a mix of open shelves and upper cabinets with doors in 1999. My mother renovated her home on the 80s and had a mix of open shelves and upper cabinets with doors (with a timeless wood stain). I walked into a million dollar model home recently and the kitchen looked exactly like my moms. I laughed out loud. Open shelves are always used in moderation. Who are these people that remove every enclosed cabinet? 😂 Is that a trend or an impractical decision maker?

Well, me. In our new house we have no upper cabinets. There are two shelves that hold some glassware and pottery plates and mugs. And then we pared down to essentials so every thing fits neatly in the lower cabinets. Food all stored in a pantry. The kitchen looks bigger and airier, and after a year, I’m still happy with it.

About 10 years ago, I picked up two home decor magazines. The cover of one said, Hottest new kitchen colour! And it featured an apple green similar to what I had painted my kitchen 10 years earlier. The next magazine declared, Greens are dead for kitchens this spring! And had a feature of all the "outdated" greens, including the apple green I had painted my kitchen 10 years earlier. :) My kitchen is still apple green.

@@cs4849 If I had a larger kitchen that's exactly what I would want. I have picked out my glassware and plates very carefully and really like the look of them so I wouldn't mind seeing them all the time, I don't have any unappealing things for storing food either and just as a practical thing I want to see how many clean dishes are available easily, without having to open a door. I'm a visual person (Bee clutterbug) and closed storage can really get on my nerves sometimes as it stops my "flow".

Maybe search for some classic styles, or mix a couple. If you still like some of your furnishings, don't buy new. Update with colour. Make some space by getting rid of the coffee table if you don't need one and get some small nested tables. Can't go wrong with a nice piece of mahogany glass cabinet. Unless you go ultra modern it goes with every style. I like a collection of different furniture, don't like minimalist matchy matchy. All this is of course just my opinion, so you do you, but if you browse the web or look for videos on classic styles, that will help. Garrett LeChic is very good for that, he's a studied interior designer.

I let my son pick his room colors. When he was a young kid about 5-11 ish he wanted star wars everything and his room blue with a red accent wall. When he grew out of that, he picked a DARK charcoal greyish color. I couldn't be more proud! It's my favorite room color in the house.

Many " old school " designers had / have the ability to combine furniture , fabrics , colors , accessories , old & new pieces , family heirlooms , etc. to meet their clients' needs & wants . It is a gift , a talent , and many years experience ! 💟

Thanks for all the handy info and for making me laugh. My 3 yr old granddaughter has designed her bedroom. She wants rainbows, unicorns and pink. Trust me she has a very big personality. Now her mom has to make it happen.

I love Sputnik lamps! I purchased one for $40.00 with six spokes, added cozy warm HD LED 40 watt bulbs. I swapped out from a builder grade b***b lamp (flush mount ceiling lamp). The lamp fell completely out of the ceiling so it cost extra to install the new lamp. Made a huge difference. With the warm light dispersed through out the kitchen, the sputnik lamp elevated the whole room. Now I can see what I am cooking. It brought out the pops of color. The power of light!

I'm going to go with "it's not how trendy it is, it's how you use it" 😂 for your caged light fixture. I never got into them myself, but yours looks beautiful in front of that dark wall, and if something works, it works, regardless of being associated with trends.

Agree! And if you need the toaster, just open the cabinet and get it out. It takes like 3 seconds. I can’t stand stuff on my counters.

I don't always agree with you, Nick, but you're fun to listen to 😜. I do like a somewhat open floor plan. When I chose my floor plan for my house built in the 80's I chose not to have a formal dining room but just an open country kitchen. That was not the trend but everyone liked it and the builder used my idea for others. When we have guests they all stay in the open country kitchen/eating room and rarely go into the living room. Btw: I love the end of your video. Make it your own!

In flats in Europe it's normal to have a kitchen with a dining table in it. Growing up we had a small TV in the corner tight next to the table and the kitchen was the hub. We rarely ever used the living room, we were all cramped in that tiny kitchen watching the tiny TV lol

My family / friends tend to congregate near the food, whether it's in the kitchen or on the outdoor grill. Socializing happens around the table. The living room usually ends up being for overflow or side conversations, unless we're watching a movie or sporting event on tv.

My open kitchen/dining/living room setup is because I HATE doorways…call it ADHD, but when I pass through a doorway, I often forget what I’m doing 🤭🫣 If I can see into other rooms, I feel much more focused and in control of the area. I’ve lived in all types of houses and this works for my brain!

We just bought a house specifically because it had an open kitchen floor plan. My husband and I like to talk and hangout while he cooks so it would be really sad if he was just in a room by himself. Same with having company over, getting food or making drinks becomes a nice casual social activity if everyone is in the same room.

Loves that you always reiterate that it doesn't matter if it's in style if it works for you and your home. I personally love a bare countertop, and it is very functional for our family and it brings me so much joy to have a cleared space. Give me my cool, unwelcoming tones -- I don't like visitors in my home anyway, lol! Cool tones are very comforting to my anxiety. As for open floor plans going away... hmm, not sure. Yes, spaces are getting smaller so open concept takes advantage of the space you do have, but it also costs less to heat enclosed rooms with the price of electricity on the rise. You don't have to heat rooms that aren't being used.
